    1. [HUNGARY] Cemeteries in Nagyhalasz
    2. Hi List, please excuse me if I mess this up. Had eye surgery last Saturday and am in need of some information on cemeteries in Nagyhalasz, Szabolcs Megye. My cousin is making a trip to Hungary Sept. 23-26 and is hoping to get a photo of our ancestors grave in Nagyhalasz. I don't know if the grave will still be there because of recent postings of what is happening to the burials in Hungary. He was Reformed and buried in 1891. I have found much information on the Jewish Cemetery located there, but nothing on any of the Christian ones. What do you think of the chance of success? Thanks for any input. 3. Toward the end of last year I posted a message on the Hungary Mailing List about a friend from my Church who was trying to locate her first cousin in Slovakia, Monsignor Istvan Kocsis. He was last heard from in about 2006 after he had been hit by a train and was on crutches. The family would very much like to know what happened to him. One person suggested contacting the Slovakian Red Cross. Another person in Michigan who I give great thanks to called a friend in New Jersey who in turn called me. He told me that Monsignor Kocsis is alive and well. In fact this person had people from Doboruszka staying with him at the time and knew the Monsignor. My friend from Church was ecstatic. Then just a few days ago I received another telephone call from a Father Joseph Vamos from Indiana. He had read an article of mine that I had written for our Fraternity Magazine and recognized the name. Father Vamos told me that in July he visited Monsignor Kocsis in Europe, had lunch with him, took some pictures and said that he looked very good. I am hoping to get some of these pictures to give to my friend in Church. This is truly a Hungary Mailing List Success Story. Margaret Paull, New Jersey 732-549-4898 mmpaull@verizon.net

    1. [HUNGARY] JOKAI, Maurus death 1904
    2. Cheryl Wenberg
    3. The Hawaiian Gazette May 6, 1904 Death of Famous Hungarian Novelist Budapest May 6th. Maurus JOKAI was once the national hero of Hungary. He was the author of over 300 books. He had been a poet, patriot, journalist, dramatist, and novelist and his books translated into English have had great vogue. Four years ago, at the age of seventy nine, JOKAI married an obscure Jewish girl, an actress, and since that time he has been cordially hated by the great mass of Hungarians who formerly loved him as their prophet and leader. He and his girl wife were shunned by society. JOKAI'S career would be amazing even without the social struggle which had made his later days discouraging. He had published a successful novel before he was out of his teens. When he was only twenty three he was one of the foremost figures in the stormy days of 1848, when Hungary shed much blood in trying to get her rights from Austria. By his fiftieth birthday, more than a quarter of a century ago, he had published no less than 200 books, and since then he has published more than a hundred others, making a total that probably breaks all literary records. On top of all of all this activity JOKAI was for many years a prominent member of the Hungarian Chamber of Deputies in which he won great fame as a patriot and an orator. JOKAI'S first wife was Rosa LABORFALVI, the celebrated Hungarian tragedienne, a favorite of the Magyars. Fourteen years after her death the aged JOKAI married the young Jewish actress. The people considered this an insult to the first wife and when his second wife tried a year after her marriage to resume her place on the stage she was mobbed by Hungarian students and forced to quit. For the past couple of years JOKAI and his girl wife had led a very quiet life.

    3. Hi there, I am finding this message belatedly as I go through my backlog of email and I am not certain whether this has been answered already, but I wanted to put my 2 cents in, in case that is useful. As part of their ongoing search for records the 1869 Census has been combed through for relevant records by volunteers at JewishGen. This is the description of this census which they have made: http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/Hungary/Census1869.htm The description seems to apply to the Census in general. I'm browsing the FHL microfilm catalog and it seems that the counties are incomplete for the 1869 Hungarian census. Does anyone know if a Szabolcs county 1869 census ever existed.. or why there's only a few specific counties available for the 1869 census? Very confused. Thanks, Nick
