Hi Joseph, László is Ladislaus. Leslie in English. Lajos is Aloysius or Ludovicus. Also known as Alois, Louis or Ludwig. Lõrinc is Laurence. This website helps me a lot, although it doesn't have accent and diacritical marks. http://www.sciway3.net/scgenweb/oconee-county/names.html Nick --- On Thu, 9/23/10, nimpex@earthlink.net <nimpex@earthlink.net> wrote: > From: nimpex@earthlink.net <nimpex@earthlink.net> > Subject: [HUNGARY] Hungarian names in Latin? > To: "HUNGARY-L@rootsweb.com" <HUNGARY-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: Thursday, September 23, 2010, 5:04 PM > Dear Listers, could someone tell me > the Latin versions of the following Hungarian given names; > László, Lajos and Lõrinc. I am so excited at all the work Nick Gombash has done and is still doing on his website. He has just uploaded 2,900+ marriages for the first of three Reformed Parishes for the town of Satu Mare (Szatmar-Nemeti) I purposely left out the accent marks so it would print. Keep checking back on Nick's site www.hungaryexchange.com . I've already found 10 Bako's! You have to put in the accent marks to search the site. I have found if I can't remember the name of the town with the accent marks, I go to the list of towns and copy and paste them on the search page. Woo Hoo! Nick you sure have been busy!! Sharon

Margaret Joe and Margaret are right about not sounding alike. Actually Romanian (as some prefer this spelling) is a Romance Language such as French, Italian and of course Latin basis. For years I thought there was a connection between the two of them, but I now know it is because of Erdély (Transylvania) and it's loss of land by Hungary. It is fortunate Bela Lugosi taught us all about Transylvania through the movies, but the underpinnings of history of the land weren't featured. I will say though, I did a double take in listening to two men speak at a buffet in Florida. It sounded Hungarian, but I couldn't understand a word...I thought I was losing my hearing. Finally, I approached one and he laughingly said in Finnish to his buddy something that contained the word "Magyar:" He then explained it to me in English. I have told this story before, but repeating it for newcomers to this List. It is just that the first syllable accent inflection is the same in Finnish and Hungarian. It might be said they hold close ties to their language construction. There are less than a handful of words similar in Finnish and Hungarian and they are probably due to interjection through other reasons, other assimilation's. This is put simplistically, but I am not a linguist by any means. Marika
