Cheryl, thank you for this most interesting article. Here is some information on Sauk City, Wisconsin today. It appears to be the oldest incorporated village in the state and features today: Halasz Manor: Charles Halasz Home Charles Halasz, cousin of Agoston Haraszthy, built this home in 1861. He married Emma Rendtorff and founded what became the Lachmund Lumber Company. This house remained in the family until 1944, one of the oldest homes in the village of Sauk City. It is now three apartments on Water Street. The emigration to America has set in only since the eighteenth century, and in 1841 the Hungarians founded in the state of Wisconsin, the colony of Harasztyfaulu, which now, as Sauk City, has long lost all trace of Magyar character. (article written in Feb. 1905) It appears the Freethinkers from Germany gained some influence in the village of Sauk City, coming here in 1852 and having a German language curriculum until WW1 1917. My story isn't so terrible, as what happened to the dead. My story is of what happened to me as a child. Every afternoon just about the time my dad was coming home from work, I would start to cry and carry on so bad that my mother asked my grandmother what she should do. My grandmother told her to take her apron corner and dip it in fresh urine and wipe my face with it! She said that someone gave me the evil eye when my mother had me in the baby carriage! Not a very neat thing to have happen! Sharon
The Pensacola Journal Pensacola, Florida Feb. 22, 1905 Hungary Has Lost Millions While the history of Hungarian emigration reaches back into the fifteenth century, it has never attained such dimensions as in the last few decades. In the early days it was directed principally towards the neighboring lands of Austria, Roumania and Bukovina, in the last of which there are still five Magyar villages. Magyars migrating to Roumania, on the other hand, are always absorbed in a short time into the life of the country. In the two decades from 1881 to 1900 the migration from Hungary has amounted to 280,000 souls, or 2-3 per cent of the total population. Down to the present day the current of emigration in the eastern counties has been directed to Roumania; in the southern counties to Bosnia and Servia; in the western counties to Austria, and only from the northern counties has it found its way mostly to this country. To specify the hightest relative and the greatest absolute drainage of population in the different administrative districts the county of Saros has in the course of these 20 years lost by emigration 26+per cent, or 43,000 of its inhabitants, while the county of Bacs-Bodrog (in the south) has lost 75,000 or 15 per cent. In 1857 there were only 53,000 Hungarians dwelling in Austria, whereas in the year 1900 there were more than 270,000; 100,000 of them in Vienna alone. The emigration to America has set in only since the eighteenth century, and in 1841 the Hungarians founded in the state of Wisconsin, the colony of Harasztyfaulu, which now, as Sauk City, has long lost all trace of Magyar character. Not till 1877 did the emigration assume large proportions. It was directed specially to Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey, and that in consequence of strikes among American workers. The volume of emigration attained its first maximum from 1886 to 1892 and its second in the years subsequent to 1899, since which date Hunagarians, by their cheap, unskilled labor, have ousted other workers in various departments of industry, as example, in the coalfields of Pennsylvania. The Hungarian ranks, therefore, among the less liked of American immigrants, and the prohibitive measures put in force against objectionable immigration are aimed in part directly at Hungarians.

Would I want someone writing my bio? Depends! As Tevia would say…”on the other hand”, I would want to tell the history of my Hungarian grandparents, their struggles and accomplishments. I can foresee Last Wills and Testaments being made up with the caveat provision for or against this being done by someone else. On a more humorous note...it does give the deceased who makes his own medallion, a chance to "always have the last word". All in all, I think it can be a positive thing for various aspects of genealogy and history of the times in general. Marika

The Deseret Evening News Great Salt Lake City, Utah Dec. 7, 1907 Married For A Century Diamond weddings are rare indeed, yet there has just been celebrated in the little Hungarian village of Isonbolgt? the anniversary of a wedding which it is declared occurred just 100 years ago. All the country is intensely interested, and the emperor has asked the authorities to forward to him official particulars so that he can personally congratulate the couple. The extraordinary couple are named SZATHMARI. The husband is 120 years old and the wife is 116. He was a farmer and was married at the age of 20. They have hundreds of descendants in and around the village. A score of years ago there was a celebration in honor of the man's 100th. birthday, and application was made to the Hungarian government for a pension. It was granted after the records of the village had been examined and the man's age verified. Four years later the woman was also granted a pension. The couple live in a modest cottage and are well looked after by relatives. They are nearly blind and very deaf, and sleep nearly all of the time. The man, however, still enjoys his pipe and a glass of wine, and neither is bedridden. It is a strange fact that in all their years they have never left the village and know nothing of the great world outside of Isonbolgi. They were both born there and have lived continuously in wedlock a quiet and peaceful life. The recent celebration of their hundredth wedding day was participated in by the entire village, which is very proud of having established, without doubt, a world's record. Detroit News Tribune

The St. Louis Republic St. Louis, Mo. Aug. 22, 1900 Oldest Person In St. Louis Is Dead Funeral of Mrs. Mary SVOBODA Today Will Be Attended Today By 125 Descendants Head of Five Generations Mrs. Mary SVOBODA, the oldest person in St. Louis and the head of five generations of descendants numbering more than 125, died at her home at No. 1904 South Seventh street, Monday afternoon. Her age was reputed to be 108 years, though the exact number of years is not certain. By some of her grandchildren she was thought to be older, while others believed her nearer the century mark. She herself could not remember, save that she was a young girl in the time of Napoleon's supremacy in Europe. Two months ago the old lady slipped and fell as she was making her way into the alley in the rear of her house. At the time it was thought she had only slightly injured her leg, but she became gradually weaker until death came. Mrs. SVOBODA has lived in the house of South Seventh street for almost fifty years. During the Civil War and in the fifties this house was surrounded by spacious lawns, but in the interval houses have been built all around and even in front of it, crushing it into the narrowest possible quarters. Despite the changes, Mrs. SVOBODA has remained in the old place. Mrs. Mary WESELEY, her daughter, who also is very old, and John HEITMAN, a grandson, have lived with her since she came to America. The exact date when she left her birthplace, Bohemia, and came to the United States is not known, but, according to her grandchildren, it must have been more than sixty years ago. She was then a widow and had four children, one son and three daughters. The son is still living in Bohemia. Two of the daughters are Mrs. WESELEY and Mrs. Katerina DRISKA of 1846 South Eleventh street, this city. The third daughter is dead. On landing in America, Mrs. SVOBODA came directly to St. Louis, and here she has been ever since, never being outside of the city. She remarrierd, but devoted her duties as housekeeper to the last and resented any interference with them. This work seemed to give her a special pleasure, and after the injury she received had forced her to take to her bed, she seemed particularly depressed because she was helpless and could not do her accustomed work. The two months previous to her death were the only time she had ever been sick in her entire long life. While she was living her quiet existence on Seventh street her children's children married and had children of their own, and their children married and had offspring. The descendants of the old lady multiplied so that neither she nor any one of her children or grandchildren could tell just how many there were. A count once made brought the figure to 125, but this was not all inclusive, as there were the descendants of the son in Bohemia yet to be counted in. Some eight of her grand and great grandchildren were holding a wake last night at the SVOBODA home. The funeral will take place this afternoon, and, as all the relatives probably will attend, it will be of unusual proportions.
Sharon, it's common custom - even today - to distinguish families with the same surname by giving each a 'nickname'. Some places use 'upper', 'lower', 'left', 'right', 'in', 'out', depending upon which part of the village they lived in. Other places use characteristics of the families themselves, like 'red', 'blond', 'limping', 'small', etc. If way too many were there, maybe they resorted to the alphabet.
