New York Tribune April 28, 1907 Perth Amboy, New Jersey Four men were instantly killed, three badly hurt and fifteen others injured this afternoon by the falling of a brick wall at the De La Mar Copper Works, at Chrome, about eight miles from here on Staten Island Sound. All the victims were Hungarians. The cause of the accident is unknown. The catastrophe aroused great excitement among the Hungarian families. Women and children stoned officers of the plant because they were not admitted inside the grounds. An attempt was also made by the half crazed crowd to wreck a train that was brought to the works to take the injured men to a hospital in Elizabeth. The wall was twelve inches thick and twelve feet high. It was part of a new copper ore smelter, and had just been finished today. It stood on a street trestle fifteen feet high, about which a large gang was at work grading. The four who were instantly killed were: Zunyo WAGEE George SKINSKY Louis OLI Frank GINFE.

    3. The Washington Times (Washington D.C.) July 9, 1905 Countess ESTERHAZY Would Sell Her Title For Cash Member of Noble Hungarian Family Needs $100,000 - Is living In Poverty In Small Hotel In Paris Paris - Should young Rockefeller or any other young American millionaire want to become the bearer of the title and name of one of the oldest and bluest-blooded families of Europe, there is a chance for him now in this city to acquire it for the modest sum of $100,000. Countess ESTERHAZY, of the noble Hungarian family of that name, is willing to bestow the title upon any young man willing to pay her price. She is at present living in the utmost poverty in a small hotel in a side street in this city. Here she told a newspaper reporter the sad story of her life a few days ago, and with tears in her eyes explained how much it had cost her to decide to make this sacrifice. "My grandfather," she said, "was a marshal of the court of Poland and a cousin to King Stanislaus. Originally my family belonged to Hungary and my father held exalted rank. In campaigns in which he took part he had no fewer than six horses killed under him. "My mother, although a French woman, was descended from an Irish family, named O'Toole, her father being one of the 500 who accompanied Marie Stuart from France to Scotland. I was born titled and rich, but today, because of my marriage to a spendthrift of a Frenchman, I am penniless. "After three years of married misery I got a divorce. I have nothing but my good name and my title. If there should be in America a family desirous of a title for their son, I am willing to sell mine. "I invite investigation, for my title is an ancient and honorable one. I will part with it on $100,000 being deposited in my name. During my lifetime I shall be at liberty to dispose of the interest and at my death the young man who bears the title will inherit the principal."

    3. Have you checked the Social Security Death Index? There is a Frank who was born in NY in 1907 and died 1984 in Bellflower, Los Angeles, California. Peter was born 1898 and died 1975 in Burlington VT. Michael was born 1896 died 1966 E. Northport, Suffolk NY. Steven born Hungary 1887 died 1970 College Point Queens NY. The 1910 Census shows Steven age 52 and a wife Catherine age 46. He emigrated in 1888 and she in 1889, Apparently oldest son Steven born 1887 was born in Hungary, rest of children, the 1910 census says she had 16 children and 7 survived were born in US but only the first one born after they arrived was born in PA, rest in NY, Yonkers, Ward 6 Westchester, NY. I could not find them on 1900 census and there is no 1890 census to check. Maybe there are records for New York State that could help you. Lots listed SSDI but they must be grandchildren and in=laws and of course the girls would be listed At least this is the way I read the census records and did not find them in immigration records. Do you by any chance know the village they came from in Hungary? The Steve Morse will trace thro village too. 3. Hi Jay - Didn't see a reply to your question. However, Having been to Hungary & Slovakia 3 times, the answer is that it depends on the town or village. In Kisgyor, Hungary there are two (2) cemeteries in the same village. One is newer than the other one, but everyone was there. In Slovakia, it again depends on the location and how big the village/town is. In Germeska Poloma the previous cemeteries had the stones removed and they turned over the soil and planted crops over the graves. It doesn't matter whether you pay for the graves to be taken care of. It is what the towns decide to do. Even the churches have no control over this issue. All the churches can do is tell you if a person died and the dates Marie Katonak ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jamene Farrell" <jamene.farrell@yahoo.com> To: "Hungary" <Hungary-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 27, 2010 10:58 AM Subject: Re: [HUNGARY] limited space > When I was in Hungary 10 years ago and trapsing through cemetaries looking > at > headstones, I was told that if a family didn't pay for the grave's upkeep, > the > grave would get "recycled" in 25 years. so, doesn't that mean there is no > chance > of ever finding anyone's grave? > Jay Farrell > > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > HUNGARY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message >

    3. Not to worry, Margaret, nobody has to chip in if they can't afford it. Since the guy who started all this had to incorporate the organization as a legal entity, there are certain restrictions on what he can do. He told us the records are - for the time being - not for distribution via the Internet, that's why he creates CD's and DVD's for them. With all the additional camera's there will be also much more data to process, so he will need additional help for that as well. If and when the files will be available on the Net, I'm sure we'll find out as soon as they get there. He used to help out with individual requests, but don't know how busy he will become with the time constraints on his hand. Those who donate will be entitled to free CD's or DVD's of their choice, so maybe somebody else will get the data you need and they will share. 3. I don't want to come off as rude in any way, but I think Jamene should unsubscribe from the list until she can get the virus under control. She's been sending quite a bit of these emails lately. I don't mean any hard feelings in any way, at all. Nick M. 3. John, I'm sending your question - and my answer also - to the group: You can do it 'in the open', that is just send a message to the group with the amount of contribution; or you can offer it privately to me. I will try and keep tab on everybody who intends to contribute and will relay the total to the guys in Transylvania. (If they decide to make the purchase here, we use our bucks here; if not I will send them the funds collected and let you know whatever happens.) Since we are used to writing checks here, my address should be fine: J J Jarfas 131 Mud Pond Rd Equinunk, PA 18417-3335 Joe Equinunk, PA - USA jjarfas@verizon.net > Joe, > > > > What I missed in your note : > > How do we chip in? > > We are particularly interested in Szatmár (Nagymajtény). > > > > Regards, > > John >
