Thank you for the very good information, Joe. Probably it would be necessary to know what religious denomination records are being looked for. Mine are definitely from Zemplen Megye. Nagy Tarkany for Roman Catholic Church Records was in Zemplen Megye. It is no longer part of Hungary to my knowledge. There is also a Kis Tarkany. Grandfather Muszka Mihaly was born and baptized in Damoc, Zemplen Megye but the Roman Catholic Church was in Nagy Tarkany. This past Saturday night the Hungarian American Cultural Association (HACA) of Houston had the film Torn from the Flag shown to about 50 people. It was a very moving film about the Hungarian October 1956 revolt. I will not bore you with my details about the film but I am attaching the website for the film reviews. http://www.tornfromtheflag.com/Press-Reviews.html I just ordered the DVD so I can see it again. Margaret, sorry I misunderstood. You are correct times have changed. Today money talks. In my case I had a relative from Budapest pick up my birth certificate. His name is same as mine (Laszlo Josa) so that helped me. We are close in age, he was born in 45 and I was born in 44. Same month but he was 2 days before mine. Thanks, Laci, and all those who helped. I actually managed to find the managing real estate office and talked to a nice guy; he told me old records are not to be found (the building changed owners more than half a dozen times in the '70s), but called up one of the old time tenants and shared his phone # with me. I just could not reach this fellow yet. Local registrars, Nick, are authorized to issue 'certified' civil records to those requesting them, provided they are entitled to them. Nobody else can get them. Churches are also authorized to issue certified church records - but all this has to be paid for - usually with 'document' stamps, which can be purchased at local post offices. And just like everything else, the prices go up from time to time (as far as I know they don't accept cash ... but churches usually take 'donations'). The 'normal' way to handle such requests from abroad is through the Embassy. I have not looked at their charges lately, but if they jacked up the price it is their 'right', which is also one way to increase the flow of foreign currency into the treasury! :-( The government actually established an 'online' document handling web site, but you have to register to use it (all in Hungarian of course: https://ugyfelkapu.magyarorszag.hu/); but, to be able to register, you have to show up in any document office in Hungary to prove your identity! :-) Needless to say this is mainly for use for citizens living in Hungary, but I can imagine anybody can register if, while visiting the country also visit a document office (I was there in September and did not think of it). Information on how to obtain certified documents will be found on each country's embassy web site, usually under consular affairs. Joe Equinunk, PA - USA jjarfas@verizon.net Nick M. Does anyone know the proper procedure of how to write to the towns in Hungary and Slovakia to get a copy of the needed records? Should I include money with the request? If so, how much? > Are there forms online where we could just fill in the names and dates for the individual records that we need.. then write/type it out? All of my research in 19th century Hungary ( mostly in semi rural Bihor Megye }, now Romania, has turned up ledgers, registers and logs of these events but no separate certificates. Apparently, back then the regular practice was just to enter births, marriages, and deaths in the public or church records, but not to issue a separate certificate. It is very possible that this may still be general practice there, and that a separate certificate is made up and issued for a fee only upon request. This may be why Les didn't have one. Incidentally, most older record books were kept in Latin, as were 18th and early 19th century census. I wrote to them.. I have the address... with what I wanted... they replied back with the fact they had the info, and quoted a price... about $35 (US) all in english. I sent them an International Money Order (only cost about $1.00 plus the amount due), and in a couple weeks they sent back a copy of the records... dates of birth, marriage dates, death dates for the individuals I listed.... I keep thinking I should have asked for more on siblings, etc. My only complaint is they converted all of the first names of my relatives from Magyar to Slovak... I'm sure the records were NOT in Slovak. I cannot remember where I got the address of the Archives in Micholovce....which was the closest. If noone submits more detailed answer I will look through my (very) unorganized files for more assistance. Jim Lakatos ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nick M. Nick, back in 2004 I needed my birth certificate to apply for my citizenship. I was already a citizen because I was under 18 when my parents became citizen, but I never got the paper. I could not find my birth certificate so I did two things. I called the Hungarian embassy and they ordered my birth certificate which cost me about 25 dollars. I also called the city hall in Balatonalmadi and asked them for a copy of my birth certificate. I told them I will be sending a relative to pick it up. They charged him 30 dollars and he mailed it to me. The one I ordered from the embassy arrived about 3 weeks after my call to them. Here is a webpage for the embassy. http://www.huembwas.org/Consul/ENG/classical_cases/get_certificates/Certific ates.htm Laszlo (Les) Josa -----Original Message----- From: hungary-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:hungary-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Nick M.
