    3. Roger, If your grandfather was suppose to be in the medical corp in WW1 perhaps you should look for men who were veterans. Perhaps you could find him thro those records. I believe the medical corp was part of the branches of service. 1. Did My Grandfather exist at all?
    2. Roger, I did a quick check on the Pannonia sailing for our Sandor Ragenyi and found that Sandor was born in Szatmarudvari. As a result, the records at the LDS will be of little help to you as the Udvari's mentioned in Linda's post are in Bihar and Tolna. Szatmarudvari was in Szatmar but now part of Romania and now known as Odoreu, Satu Mare, Romania. To my knowledge, there are no Parish records for Szatmarudvari (Odoreu) at the LDS. A year ago April I made a trip to Szatmarudvari (Odoreu) and researched my family. My father was born there. All the available Parish Records are in the National Archives in Satu Mare. It is my understanding that the Romanian Government has not given the LDS permission to film these records. I have found the only feasible ways to research the records in Satu Mare at the National Achieves are: 1) Through a Romanian citizen who is familiar with the records who should be able to easily gain access to the Archives. 2) Through a researcher that is pre registered with the Romanian Government for access to the Archives. The records are fairly complete and I have been able to trace several of family lines from Szatmarudvari and nearby villages back to the late 1700's using the available parish records. I will point out that a lot of time and effort can be saved in the search if you know the religion of the family you are researching. Each religion is in a different set of parish records, as would be expected. I started out with the Roman Catholic records as my family practiced this religion in the USA. I found that they practiced the Greco Catholic religion while in Hungary and until this was discovered, a lot of time was wasted searching the wrong parish books. One source that might be useful to you at the LDS is the film on the book of Szatmar Nobility. I mention this as your surname ends in "yi" which is a good indication that the family was of nobility. Before you get too excited, about ten percent of the families in Szatmar at the time were considered to be of nobility--a relatively common status. Please don't confuse nobility with royalty. Many families reached nobility status through military and other service. This status also did not at all indicate wealth, especially after the mid 1800's. My father's family were "of nobility" but dirt poor when they arrived in the USA. If I can be of any additional help in who you might research the records in Satu Mare, please feel free to email me directly. Jerry

    2. In a message dated 7/12/2005 11:23:58 PM US Eastern Standard Time, rregene@hotmail.com writes: >>>>b: 7/15/1885 (possibly 1884), Udvari, HU.<><<<< The church records for two different locations in Hungary named Udvari are available at any LDS local Family History Center. (and in the main library at Salt Lake City of course). You can rent these films, they are shipped to your local center and you use the microfilm equipment to view the films. To identify these films, the entire LDS Family History Library Catalogue is online. _http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp) Use the option that says Place Search -- type in Udvari only. Here is the brief description of the records available for each place. Reformed Church register of births, marriages and deaths for Udvari, later called Sárrétudvari - 1765-1885 Civil registrations after 1895 are also available on microfilm also Jewish records for 1877 to 1895 Evangelical Church registers and transcripts of baptisms, marriages and deaths for Varsád, Tolna, Hungary. Includes affiliated town of Udvari, Tolna, Hungary. 1722-1895 also Civil Regsitrations for Udvari only 1895 to 1903. If he was born in Udvari, Hungary, there is a good chance you'll find his family in one of these record sets. >>>After seeing that the WW1 Draft records were being made available for a short time (thanks for posting this tidbit) I tried, again, to find something that would give me a lead on my Paternal Grandfather.>>> Uhmm . . I think I didn't pay attention to the post about this . .so I don't know IF the entire set of records is actually online or not . .I know that the complete record set IS NOT available at ancestry.com, but many people use it as if it is because they don't read the description of the record set. Your gf would have been the correct age to register based on the birth date provided. Since it seems he may have moved around alot, the best suggestion I can come up with is that you visit a library that has the complete set of NARA WWI Draft Registration microfilms. There is one in Ft Wayne, IN genealogy library that I used for research. Found everyone in the family. An alternative is to rent films (could get VERY expensive) from the LDS which also has a complete set of the NARA films. It's interesting that you remark that no one in your family talked about your gf, but yet someone in your family had to have given the information that showed up on a Death Cert. you mention. Two additional ideas, look for probate records at the Court of Milwaukee county where he died. They have excellent records, but not online. Also, the Milwaukee Historical Society has historical city directories (as does the Ft. Wayne library). Look for an obituary for him, and for his wife. Also, have you inquired about his Social Security registration? The SS5 form will give the names of his parents, and where he was born. Because of his age, it is unlikely he will be in the online database -- BUT, you can do a FOI request ($27) to the Social Security admin. and if he had a social security number (likely unless he was a farmer or railroad worker), you'll get the information. Go to the SS Admin web site for instructions of how to request this. You may find other microfilm records that would contain information about him through using the LDS Family History Library Catalogue -- the thing that lists the 2 million books and microfilms of records held by the LDS in Salt Lake. Use the Place Search option for where he lived at various times, and find out what records might possibly contain information about him that have been microfilmed which you can then rent and view at a local Family History Center. 3. Hello All, After seeing that the WW1 Draft records were being made available for a short time (thanks for posting this tidbit) I tried, again, to find something that would give me a lead on my Paternal Grandfather. I have searched the Draft records and the Census using every name variation I could think of; all to no avail. Sandor Regenyi / Alexander Regene b: 7/15/1885 (possibly 1884), Udvari, HU. d: 5/27/59, Milwaukie, WI. and is buried at the Wood National Cemetary. (I have contacted the funeral homes in that area and there are no records). The Death Certificate lists that, in WW1, he was a Private in the Medical Corps. Arrived: Ellis Island, 3/21/09, onboard the Pannonia, that sailed from Fiume'. He was 5'5", black hair, brown eyes, dark complexion (I can't make out the entry). The manifest lists his age as 24 yrs. and that he had a wife, Raganyi Sandorne', age 24 yrs. His destination is listed as a brother-in-law, Janos Puskas, in Clarksburg, W.VA. He appears again, this time on the manifest of the SS Patricia, that sailed from Bremen, DE, and arr.5/9/13. This time. his name is spelled Sandor Regeniyi and he lists his age as 29. He listed a Lidine (sp?) Regenyi in Udvari, HU. as his nearest relative. His destination is listed as Scranton, PA., his trade as "Smith". It lists his previous stay in the States as 1909 - 1912. He married Theresa Budroff/Rutroff, date/location unknown, from Rich Fountain, MO. (she is verified on the 1920 census). My father, Alexander Regene, Jr. (He later changed his name to Alex Henry Regene), b: St.Louis, MO. d: 1994, Rockford, IL. A younger brother, Albin, was b: Chicago, Il., in 1926. He also had an older sister, "Marge" and another sister, "Annie". No details are known about any of them. None in my family ever spoke of Sandor/Alexander. I have never seen a photo of him, do not know his religion, etc. In fact, it was from my father's death cerificate that I learned his name. My Grandmother, who died when I was young, she never spoke of him either. This is all I have after five years and the frustration is almost palpable. Can anyone help? Roger Regene

    1. Re: Correction to listing NARA immigration records
    2. FYI -- I recently sent my G-639 Freedom of Information Act form in to my local office in Atlanta to get the naturalization records for some members of my family. The Atlanta office didn't forward it, they sent it back to me with a notice, I'm not sure if this applies to the whole country or just the Atlanta office, but the notice says: PUBLIC NOTICE TO ALL: Effective April 25, 2005, all FOIA/PA requests should be mailed directly to: National Records Center - FOIA Unit Post Office Box 648010 Lee's Summit, MO 64064-8010 For overnight express "only", use the following address: National Records Center - FOIA Unit ATTN: Suite 300 150 Space Center Loop Lee's Summit, MO 64064 The public number for NRC FOIA/PA requesters is (816)350-5570 to ask questions and obtain information. Since it would have cost the same in postage, I wondered why they didn't just forward it for me. Anyway, in about a week or 2 I received an acknowledgement letter from the Lee's Summit office that they received my request, and since it was brief, they would put it on the fast track. I called the phone number to ask a question, and the phone was answered by a friendly, helpful human almost immediately. - Elaine On Mon, 11 Jul 2005 18:32:02 -0400, "Scott & Tina Southwick" <southwick@voyager.net> said: > Immigration Records - Sorry all! 3. Type it in the box in the upper left and hit OK. These databases are much more difficult to work with in some ways than the DVD. It is very easy to identify possible alternate spellings on the DVD, which you cannot do with the online version. It will only look up entries with exact spellings. My other frustration is that I cannot figure out how to get back to the listing after you have looked at an entry. I have only been able to repeat the search. Can anyone help with this?
