    3. The main Synagogue for the "Gonc district/jaras " of Abauj-Torma was located in Szanto, with 1,086 members. I don't know if there was a Synagogue in Gonc-Ruszka in the 1860's. Perhaps the Szanto records would contain records of the family. The Family History Library Catalog has the records for Szanto (Abauj-Torna), Jewish births, marriages and deaths, for the years 1842-1895. Mary Nagy

    3. Gonc-Ruszka was in Abauj-Torna Megye, now Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen Megye. The 1877 Dvorzsak Gazetteer shows a Jewish Synagogue in Gonc-Ruszka in the year 1877, with 142 people. The Family History Library Catalog does not have records of a Jewish Synagogue in Gonc-Ruszka. The main Synagogue in Abauj-Torma was located in Szanto, with 1,086 members. The 1877 Dvorzsak Gazetteer lists where people of each town/village went to church. Ruszka (Gonc) (Gonc-Ruszka) had a Roman Catholic Church with 666 people, it belonged to the Kassa Diocese; 20 Greek Catholic people went to Garadna; kg - 21 not stated; ag - 6 not stated; Reformed Church in Gonc-Ruszka had 325 people, Tiszaninnen diocese; IZR (Jewish) 142 people had, it appears, a Synagogue in Gonc-Ruszka. The handwriting is difficult to read (for me) so cannot type it for translation, but can scan the copy from a LDS film print and attach and email to a willing person. 1. Question re: Reformed Church - Jewish records
    2. cheryl BALOG wenberg
    3. In reading the Goncruszka Hungarian Reformed Church records, I came across my families around the 1860's as "Hebrew", later records showed the same families as belonging to the Reformed Church. Being raised Catholic, this was quite a surprise and very very interesting. I checked the familysearch.org site and cannot seem to locate a film listing any Hungarian Jews for the village. Is there anyone out there that could possibly point me in the right direction for further information? Thank you, cheryl BALOG wenberg

    3. Joseph, There is a very good genealogy research company located in Budapest that I ordered my family genealogy from and they do tours. You can visit their website at www.familytree.hu and I am sure they would give you info and rates and so on. Anyone interested in hiring a researcher right in Hungary I would highly recommend them. They were a bit expensive for the research, but very well worth it! I would be interested in locating a guide for a private tour for two people at a reasonable rate. I would like to visit the historical places in Budapest and Pecs and the nearby small village of my ancestors. I would appreciate any suggestions and contact information. Joseph Martin Romeoville, IL" Joseph, I have no knowledge of tour guides in Hungary. However, if you are accustomed to driving in traffic in USA, you would not have trouble driving in Hungary. We reserved a rental car before leaving USA (1992 & our first trip to Europe), and drove Germany, Austria, Hungary. Budapest is an international type city where you easily find people who can understand English. We took an English-speaking bus tour from literature available in hotels, etc., and walked to several places. Budapest is in the northern part of Hungary and Pecs in the southern part, but it appears to be a rather large city as well. The roads are similar to our Federal highways and easily traveled, especially Budapest to Pecs. If your 'small village' is nearby Pecs, perhaps you could locate a Hungarian guide from there. Buy a Hungarian roadmap in English and a book on Hungary such as Fodors from you local library, online, or elsewhere and decide what you want to see before you go. The countryside is beautiful as well. Just my suggestion. Good luck on your trip! Let us hear about your visit when you return. They are always most interesting from each individual's point of view.
