    1. Transylvania
    2. Beth, I am sure you realize that you will actually be in Romania when traveling in Transylvania. That said, you may wish to post you query on the Romania Mailing list. Two years ago, I traveled by automobile to Satu Mare (previously Szatmar) from Budapest. Satu Mare is just across the Hungarian border and on the western edge of Transylvania. I found traveling by car through Hungary was really not a problem but believe that I would strongly consider an organized tour if I were to travel extensively through the Transylvania area. My primary reason is my lack of knowledge of the Romanian language. I found that lack of knowing the language was not nearly the problem traveling in Hungary as it was in Romania, especially in the smaller towns and villages. I would have been at a complete loss had I not had a person traveling with me from Hungary that had a fair handle on the Romanian language. Even is Satu Mare, a reasonably large town, very few people understood English. If you do speak Hungarian, this would certainly help as we found some people that could communicate in this language. Hope this helps! Jerry

    3. Thanks to Joseph Jarfas....he was kind enough to send me this info a while back regarding Hungarians to Chicago. Andras and Pal FUZY were distinguished as the first Hungarian settlers in South Chicago (Andras was there first) and became successful businessmen and church leaders, founders and supporters. He immigrated as a 26 year old in 1887 to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. In 1888 his wife came with his two year old daughter and three year old son, who later became the first Hungarian Judge in East Chicago, Indiana. Andras then moved to South Chicago in 1889. We don't know where Pal was living at that time, but fact is he emigrated in 1883 - and as such he was the first emigrant from the family (supposedly an engineer per 1900 census). Andras bought a house and opened a "saloon" or pub. A few years later two of their sisters also came and settled, and later numerous other relatives as well. According to the book, others from Goncruszka included Daniel MESZAROS, Daniel KOPCSO, Janos TOTH. Andras moved to East Chicago in 1901 and soon after most of the people of Goncruszka also disappeared from South Chicago. They also endured some calamities : fires, illnesses and deaths; according to the book one family lost six children one after the other and soon after the breadwinner also died. In one of the footnotes he registers the death of Andras and his wife: died in 1936 a few months apart. cheryl BALOG wenberg Please contact me if connected to any of these families.

    3. Earlier this week I posted a message on the HUNGARY-L list. I stated that MAGYAR Family website may be down for a little while because the renewal was due early September and I am out of work. I said soon as I can I will have it up and running. Not even a day after Dan Almashy emailed me to offer to send me some money. Next day both Dan and I logged in the MAGYAR Family website and noticed the yearly renewal fee has been paid. It was paid by somebody named Cherti. Looking at the member list there is only one person by that last name. But it says the last time he logged in was July of 2002. I tried emailing him to say thank you but that email came back to me undeliverable. So I would like to take this time to say thank you to both Bob Cherti and Dan Almashy for their kind offer and help, publicly on this list. Laszlo (Les) Josa
