A family member on my mother's side, Gizella Csanfordi, sailed on the Rotterdam at the age of 7 with her Nogradi cousins, arriving in the USA Oct 10, 1905. Her mother's name was Elizabeth, and in the space where it asks the destination it lists her mother, Uyabhth (?), in Cleveland. It seems to me that I've seen the Hungarian spelling of Elizabeth beginning with a "U" in other instances as well but can't remember where. Check out the manifest (line 6) and see if you're seeing what I see. I received a letter from the Embassy of the Republic of Hungary, and have deciphered as well as I can. I wonder if someone who understands the language better then I could help me understand my interpretation. The letter follows: Thank you, Shirley Iktatószám: HUMWAS2005CLA000900 Tisztelt Ügyfelünk! Reference has been made to lists of Hungarians with German ancestry being expelled from Hungary after both world wars. Does anyone know where or how to read these lists? Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net
How many different ways are there to say Elizabeth and its diminutives in Hungarian? IS Erzebet and Orze two of them? I am going through the new book on Germans in Veszprem Megye and also my own data bank and am getting confused with some of the names. It is enough that surnames are spelled and mis-spelled many different ways but making heads or tails out of some given names doesn't make it any easier. BTW, the book is very good. It emphasizes the need to be able to read Hungarian to do research beyond names and dates. Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net

His father was Tibor Gaál (1922-1977), his mother Mária Tapodi (1925-). Both families hail from county Bács-Kiskun. Found an old E-mail address for him (Gaal.Gyula@mkogy.hu), but likely it does not work any more since the article you presented tells about him becoming the CEO of the MÁV, the Hungarian Railroad. This guy will be way too busy to concern himself with genealogy! :-) Don't know if his mother is still alive (I gleaned all this from an old web page: http://www.mkogy.hu/kepviselo/elet/g362.htm), but your best bet will be to track her down to find relevant information for the family.
I read in a catholic newspaper yesterday that numerous catholic parish have lost years and years of church records to Katrina and the flood waters. Apparently, there is no way to reconstruct them. What they are intending to do for future marriages, if have the witnesses, maid of honor and best man, sign a document stating they know the couple were baptized and raised catholic. This will satisfy the church requirements for the sacraments of First Communion, Confirmation, matrimony and Holy Orders. It may help future generations who search for records but it will not help those looking for records of their ancestors. No doubt the records of other denominations have also been destroyed as have those of some cemeteries. The article mentioned nothing about civil records. Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net

Hi all, just received word that some researchers in Germany are publishing (or attempting to publish) "Ortssippenbücher" about certain places in Hungary, but due to the huge amount of information and high printing costs some of them they could not, which included Soroksár. Their present attempt is about Dunaharaszti/Taksony 1696-1828, which has to get started by the end of this month to be able to make it. Here is the relevant information: "We started to print a new book from Dunaharszti/Taksony 1696-1828, app. 1000 pages, DIN A4, 60 EURO plus s. + h., but we need 250 orders in advanced, it ended at 1828, if we go to 1895, we have 4 books and 200 EURO, nobody will pay that price, so only one book and this offer ends at end of october 2005. Not enough orders no book. This book included 3 register birth, death, marriage also in german and it shows you most settlers and where they come from and two generations later the people who went to Batschka, Banat and other villages in Hungary. Also inside the first 20 years of Soroksár, there was only the church in Dunaharaszti. This book is offered (advertised) in a few news papers and to genealogical societies who got our journal. So the people have time to end of october to order after that this book go the same way like Soroksár. Today we have 20 orders (wow so much) so I am sure that we not print this book; bad luck for the people but the moment is now, no more discussion about that in the future." But they did manage to print church records about Vecsés: "Vecsés is (was) printed last year and from 350 books are 300 saled (sold), Vecsés included 3 register Birth, Death, Marriage, 1034 pages DIN A4 (290x210 mm), weight 2,5 Kilo (5.5 lb), price 60 EURO plus s.+ h.. Vecsés started 1786-1895, this village is a secondary village , that means that the people come from other villages around Budapest, no new settlers. They came from Soroksár, Dunaharaszti, Taksony, Ujhartyan etc. and from places on the Buda side like Pilisvörösvar, Budajenö, Nagykovacsi and from the Csepel Island." If anybody interested in ordering any of the above, let me know and I will supply name and address. Joe Equinunk, PA - USA jjarfas@ezaccess.net --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by ezaccess.net]

Hello Dan and fellow listers, We dodged another bullet. We boarded up on Saturday morning. Rained about 4 inches Friday afternoon. Winds were real bad from about 9pm. They got real bad about 3am Saturday had gusts to about 80mph at about 3:30am. It was a lot worse just south of us (about 7 miles). They had about 6 ft of water from the storm surge. It also was even worse with the wind and surge west of us. Luckily all we had was about 10 inches of rain between Friday afternoon till Saturday afternoon when the rain stopped. There is a local TV station that has a photo gallery of pictures. http://www.katc.com/ Here is the website and just click on photo gallery. Then click on Vermilion parish, that is the county just south of us where it got real bad. They are still rescuing people as we speak. Thanks for think of us, Les -----Original Message----- From: Dan Almashy [mailto:Dans57@webtv.net] Sent: Sunday, September 25, 2005 5:33 PM To: lesjosa@bellsouth.net Subject: You okay? Les, I couldn't wait any longer to check on you. Just wanted to see if you are alright. I hope this note finds you in one piece and all is okay at your home. Dan
Dear Listers, I need some help translating the information stamped by a photographer on the back of a picture. I am trying to locate the birth and baptism information on my Great-grandmother, Etelka Huszar. I have received a picture of her brother and his wife. There was nothing written on it. The only information I have is the photographer's stamp on the back of the picture. I would like to scan the back of the picture and have someone translate the information for me. Thank you, Dianne Bluhm
