Presently the value limit is much higher - above which duty is due - than it was under the communists, but still exists: you can't send a computer system or a Cadillac for example, free of charge! :-) Can't cite you figures, but most average gift packages make it free of duty. 1. Package to Hungary
    2. Back in the day when my parents would send packages to family in Hungary, we could only to newly married couples or to retired persons as they wouldn't have to pay the heavy tax on them. Now with the governmental changes.... what are the rules? Do people still pay a tax? Margo KP (Koroknay - Ivan - Eory - Bocsi - Karikas)

    3. Last week I rec'd an email from someone with this as the subject: Re: Rev Pal Sabo pozsi@email.com and this as the message: Norridge United Church of Christ Magyar Reformatus Egyhaz Dear Anne Sprentz Please Contact From: Pozsgaiakron@aol.com CC:pozsi@email.com I emailed this person last week but got no reply. I'm wondering if anyone else on the list rec'd an email from this person, if it was a spam email, or what. It seems odd that it be regarding a Hungarian church, so I didn't think it was spam, but wonder where this person got my address from and what they wanted. Still no response from them. Did anyone else on the list, by any strange change get an email like this too? I did some checking and it seems this is a real church in Chicago, but have no idea what they'd want with me. Curiousity is getting the better of me. :) Anne Do you know who killed my father? John B. But as you were told before you will have to find birth place record(s) in England to commence to do research in Hungary. Don't know if you have requested the naturalisation papers for Samuel from your National Archives: http://www.catalogue.nationalarchives.gov.uk/searchresults.asp?SearchInit=0&txtsearchterm=kordy&txtfirstdate=&txtlastdate=&txtrestriction=&hdnsorttype=Reference&image1.x=24&image1.y=9&image1=GO Maybe that document will shed light on his place of birth. If that document won't supply for you the necessary information I would advise to track down all his descendants to find out who else might have old documents from the family. Any correspondence, address book, pictures, diary or journal will do. Once you have a place of birth (even if approximate) come back and we'll see to it that you get additional help to search across the Channel. 3. Can anybody help with my research into the above family. In the UK 1901 census, the Kordy family lived in Portsdown Road, Paddington, London. The head of the family, Samuel (born about 1853), was described as a "Professor of Piano Music and Singing". Samuel lived with his wife, Rose and their children Madeleine, Rita and Denzo. They are all described on the census of "Hungarian subjects". In 1903, Madeleine married my great great uncle William Edward Harris who was the Chairman of the Ritz in London, Atlantic City and Boston (amongst others). I have no further information on the Kordys and no idea whatsoever on Hungarian genealogy. Can anybody suggest sources I can check in an attempt to find this family in Hungarian records? 3. Thank you to everyone who helped me find the film number for the church records of the people of Pula. To be honest, I found the FHC very difficult to work with in searching for Hungarian records. I think I now have the correct film numbers.the records are kept in Petend.but when my cousin went to order them this morning in Philadelphia he found his closest FHC was closed for installation of new carpet and also that their hours are limited. He will go back next week and when the film is in, he and another cousin will look at it together. Again, thanks. Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net

    1. List of deportees
    2. mt-b
    3. Many lists of deportees are kept in various Hungarian places, such as the National Statistical Bureau, the National Archives, the Military Office. You might try logging on to the Hungarian National Archives and asking a staff member your question. At least you would get a sense of direction. http://www.natarch.hu/mol_e.htm Here is the English version of the Archives, with a link at the bottom of far left column to email them. Also, try searching through the archives of the Jewish Genealogical site, as lists of deportees are a frequent topic of discussion. http://www.jewishgen.org/ Good luck. Maureen Tighe-Brown

    1. Univ. of Pittsburgh Listing trade unions and individual's cards.
    2. Dear List, Found these sites listing some Hungarian surnames of workers for U.S.X (U.S.Steel) in 1940s. Excerpt: The social data on the cards have thus far been used for a variety of scholarly research projects: e.g. for a study and oral history on women crane operators at the National Works during WWII and for a book on Jews of Hungarian background who worked there. Memo: The instructions are for individuals: Use your browser's Find in Page function to locate item(s) on this page I didn't know how to do this, but these were the instructions that worked: Open the website Click on Edit (top of page) Scroll down and clickon Find Type in the persons name and click on Find NextThis will take you to that person's listing http://www.library.pitt.edu/labor_legacy/aliceA.htm http://www.library.pitt.edu/labor_legacy/homestead.htm Marika

You would have to find a Hungarian translator for this, since I have found that most letters are unanswered if written in English. I hope this helps.
