I have a document that my mother got as a record of her baptism and confirmation in the R Catholic church in the early 1900's. It is a handwritten as though it was hand written probably from an original book. Of course it is all in Hungarian which I cannot read but I did have someone translate if for me. There is no mention of a godfather. The name given shows the godmother as widow Mrs. Janos Kovacs maiden name Erzsebet Tabai. Is there any reason there would have been no godfather named? Evelyn

Dear Elizabeth, A lot of your questions could be answered if you got a copy of Fel and Hofer's "Proper Peasants." Women did indeed retain their maiden names. It was considered a sign of respect for a husband to continue to refer to his wife by her maiden name. The customs of how godparents were chosen varied from place to place, but in general it was based on a "koma" relationship. That is, two boys who became very close as children would become each other's "koma." This relationship lasted throughout their lives, and one of the most important aspects of it was that they became godparents to each other's children. Their wives would become the godmothers. This custom is not so common today, since people have become so much more mobile. The word itself is considered a bit "countrified" and is usually translated as "best buddy." In the case of my husband's great-grandfather, he and his sister were named as godparents to his "koma," since he was not married yet. Presumably, when he did marry, the task would be taken over by his wife. In the meantime, I came across an all encompassing book. Perhaps you can get it from your library on their Inter Library Loan: The World of Names A Study in Hungarian Onomatology by Bela Kalman Akademiai Kiado, Budapest 1978 It lists hundreds of Hungarian surnames from Aba to Zsuzsu, plus it gives etymologies for them. Would be glad to do a "look-up" if you need it. The message below appeared on another website to which I subscribe: It was recently brought to my attention that there is a new site called fakefamily that created a software program that produces fake genealogy family trees and posts them to the web. The purpose of this is to bring advertising revenues to websites. There are sites who use advertisers, such as google (like on my page) or private advertisers to bring revenue. Many of us who use it do so to help pay for a legitimate site (like me), but some abuse the set up and have created these fake family trees, google and yahoo put them in their search engine as a genealogy website, and then when folks search for genealogy sites, these come up with completely bogus families only to bring users to the site and earn money in a very underhanded way, and in my opinion, unethical! This is a potentially huge threat to Internet genealogy! The reason being that, especially for beginning genealogists, they find names online, and take it for granted that everything is correct and they never verify the information for themselves. The guy who created this software is well aware of this and has no sympathy for that happening with one of his fakefamilies. I want to take this opportunity to press upon you the importance of verifying EVERYthing you come across with genealogy and even history in general, with primary documents (birth, marriage, death certificates, court cases, etc.) rather than secondary sources (books, word of mouth, websites, etc). Thanks, Julie. I went back and looked again. He really was there. I was looking in the wrong state. I never knew he ever lived in Chicago. With an unusual name, it's better not to specify a state. People may not be aware that aliens who served during World War I were automatically granted citizenship, whether or not they had previously filed a Declaration of Intent. Although my father had filed his Declaration, he was naturalized through his World War I service. Nagybégány was also in former Bereg County; today Velika Bihanj, Beregovo, Ukraina! I found the above re Nagybégány from an 2001 posting by someone. Couldn't find it on the map though. Hi I believe I found my father-in-law on the Ellis Island site but I do not recognize his last place of residence. Would anyone on the list know where Nagy Begany was or is. Is it anywhere near Szolyva which is now called Svalava in the Ukraine. Thank you Marie
