Hello, everyone. It was a pleasure to see Hungarian written on this list (yes, I am memorizing the phrases you shared). I am frantically trying to learn this arcane, but wonderful language--no, like so many other immigrants to this country my mother who was born of Hungarian parents didn't teach me. In January I will be going to Hungary to stay for four months. I will be teaching at the University in Pecs. Although I will be teaching in English, knowing Hungarian would be so helpful. This list means much to me. I have learned where to find maps of Hungary, where to find information about Hungarian customs and history, where to find information about my grandparents and great grandparents; some of you have shared your travel experiences with us, too, and now you all are sharing a bit of Hungarian to those of us who wish we knew the language. We are trying to decipher some Hungarian records and the earlier records are sometimes in Latin. We really need to be able to decipher the cause of death in the death records. Some words are in Hungarian, some in Latin and some it seems are a combination. Is there a list anywhere I can print out that would help us? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Margaret

The Eszterhazy family was one of the largest Hungarian aristocratic families with title of prince. They have had very large landed properties in our region. You can find a locality in Hungary at http://www.telepuleskereso.hu/ You write in the name Isztimer and Bakonykuti in the field " a telepules neve :" or "telepules:" and press the "Kereses" or "telepuleskereses>>" button. I am trying to translate one of the first pages in the book when the reformed church first started in 1772. I can make out most of the words on the page but there are a few I cannot figure out. I have listed the link to the graphic below. I found that it is best to first save the file to your hard drive and then view it for more control over magnification. The first word I am having trouble with is the first word on the second line " Consarbaltuk? ". Is it a mixture of latin and hungarian? The second is the first word in the third line " minemai ? " . Mai is today but what is minemai? The last is the fifth and sixth word in the third line " Nö Rfaöta " ? Maybe someone with a better knowlege of Hungaran can infer what these words are from the context of the paragraph. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Joe I found the article very interesting. The Esterhazy family were extremely powerful. I am sorry for posting something to the list that probably shouldn't have been shared. Oh well....
