Hello everyone, Well - we finally had a trip to Budapest (in November) that was aborted after only a couple of days due to my father's health. I didn't really get to find much out about the things I wanted to. I am left with trying to obtain his birth certificate now from afar. Major problem is that he was born in what was then and what is now Ukraine - but he insisted his whole life that he was Hungarian. Ethnically, he is - but legally - I am not sure, and he has no idea either and the memories are not coming back. If he was in fact born in Beregovo in 1929, do I need to be going to the Ukranians to try to obtain his birth certificate? Anthony

I think I might have found my great-grandfather on the Ellis Island manifest. Problem is..I can't find a Piorhoz, Hungary, which it says was his last residence. Since 1828 each parish had to make copies of their books and send them to the State Archives (also the bishop's archives). I do not think everyone realizes or knows about sending GEDCOM files to the Family History Center via their website or using FTM (Family Tree Maker) or actually the program I find the easiest to use (and it is free) PAF (Personal Ancestral File). You can download the latter, free, from this site: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/default.asp I submit my family trees and update them regularly. As I said twice now I have had family in Europe contact me...one a distant cousin in Bavaria and the other a third cousin in Hungary. And to top it all off they both speak English!! Thank God! Ted, I do not know where the civil records are recorded or if they have been filmed but I have recently found out that records exist pre dating those that have been filmed. I have an honest and true third cousin living in Veszprem, Megye that has been able to access the old books some of which have records back to the early 1700's. Property records also exist as well as old Census records. Having had this cousin find me through information I put out onto the net has been a tremendous blessing as every day he sends me new information and lately he has visited the cemeteries and taken picture of old family tombstones. I am not talking from just one village but from several. Moral of the story....put your information on the net...through one of the genealogy programs...you never know who will contact you.
