    1. Translation help

    3. My apologies if this isn't the correct forum for my request... I recently sent an introduction letter to people in Hungary with two of my family surnames - MIKOLICS and NYÚL-TÓTH - asking them to contact me if they thought there may be a family connection. I have received some email responses which I've been able to get translated by Freelang.org. I recently received two handwritten letters, both in Hungarian, and wonder if anyone can assist with the translation. I can forward scanned copies. Any assistance would be much appreciated. 3. Jim, You may be pleasantly surprised to find a relative or two or more who speak English. Do you know for a fact you have living relatives in Hungary? Have you checked the phone directory? Have you tried putting a message on an ancestry or roots web message board? My cousin in Hungary found me that way and we have found our relationship growing and very satisfying. I also found a cousin living here in Florida from my German line....a man in Bavaria who I had been communicating with for awhile found a message on the Bavarian Board and realized the man who wrote it was searching the same family I was. He sent me the message, I followed up and had my new found cousin here for New Years. I can only speak from personal experience but if your family is from a small village, they may still be there or in a neighboring village. Try writing to the Priest of the village and see if he will respond. Or send a letter to the Mayor. You have a great advantage in that you can plan a trip and seek out your family. Good Luck Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net

    1. Visits to Hungary/Slovakia
    2. Now that this subject has been mentioned, perhaps someone can give me some guidance. I have been to Hungary (on tours, cruises, etc.) which whet my appetite to pursue genealogy of my ancestors. I have detailed records of 2 of my grandfathers' families up through 1895.. but since they both left about 100 years ago the family ties have been broken. As I know of the actual villages, how do I make a fruitful contact with someone there? I do not speak Hungarian but have ventured on my own there and am not hesitant to pursue any realistic path. I have another opportunity to go, but don't want to wander around in strange villages trying to find someone to guide me. Have others found techniques to make the trip worthwhile? I am open to suggestions. Jim Lakatos

I am hoping to go next spring and all the fares I have seen are quite high. May I ask if you are using a travel agent? Thanks Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net

Did you browse through Morse's introduction of using his web sites and processes: ttp://www.stevemorse.org/onestep/onestep.htm Lots of helpful information is hiding there to assist in finding missing records. As to Marika's remark: we can be sure the officers and employee's of the ships did not go 'through' E.I. - or any other immigration/registration office facility in any other port. That was their 'priviledge' ... By the way, I'm in the process of preparing to visit Hungary between 20 April and 22 May. It will be less family 'research' and more family 'visit'! :-) Also attempting to visit some of this list members' newly found relatives, at least those I have talked with and/or translated letters for them. Just don't know how far can I 'stretch' the time. Joe Equinunk, PA - USA jjarfas@ezaccess.net --- [This E-mail scanned for viruses by ezaccess.net]

Elizabeth, I would not put too much weight on the name of the ship in naturalization records. My father arrived in 1914 but did not get his citizenship until 1935. The name of the ship and date of arrival were not correct on his naturalization papers. The same was true for his mother that made a separated trip without him. Jerry

    3. Dear Marika You have no idea of the length and breadth of my search for my grandfather on the EI records. I know the name of the ship or at least the one he said he came on (naturalization petition) but most of that record is not available. I have always thought he worked his passage. In this particular case further searching will not tell me anything I do not already know. With the help of a cousin living in Hungary we have been able to trace his lineage back to the 1700's and we are working on linking all of the Tegyi family together. I have learned that not all records have been micro filmed and there are many in existence today than believed to be there. I have truly been blessed with this cousin finding me through internet queries. Now if I could only find a Grund, Lenart or Schoenig living relative in Europe. Elizabeth V. Did you try using the first few letters of their surnames with a wild card asterisk (*)? Your remarks triggered a memory. I came across a 2004 obituary I had saved for someone whom I didn't know. I saved it for it's content. It was about a woman from Germany who died in Winter Haven, Florida at the age of 99. Her obituary read the following; I'm doing some paraphrasing: She came from Frankfurt, Germany to NYC in 1923, escaping Germany's post-World War 1 economy. After the war, the inflation was so high in Germany they had nothing, said her son. She worked for the captain of her ship traveling to the U.S. and was immediately switched to first class, she never waited in line with the other passengers on Ellis Island. People think all immigrants went to Ellis Island. The truth is, if you had money, you didn't go, her son said. She was spared that indignity, he further said. She was a member of the German-American Friendship Club and also a member of the Hungarian Club. The son also gave pertinent, interesting bio information regarding his mother's accomplishments. The son's remark "People think all immigrants went to Ellis Island." Did the son mean to say "through Ellis Island"? Did all ships disembarking there discharge passengers only to have some go through the rigors of questioning, and medical exams while others with money by-passed this, as he phrased it -" were spared the indignity", or did they disembark at another location in the port? 3. In my family those with the name Karoly have been called Karl. By marriage license do you mean the license issued by a State or do you mean a marriage certificate. They can be two different things. Do not be too disappointed if it arrives and does not list the town of birth but only the country. If they were married in a church sometimes notes were made in the marriage record book and if you write to them they will usually give them to you. I have never used NARA so I do not know how easy or difficult it is to find Naturalization records. I have obtained several by writing or calling several government offices of counties I knew they lived in at one time or another. In the case of my grandfather with the name that is spelled at least 10 different ways (even in Hungarian records) it took three tries. I have never found him on EI records even though I know the name of the ship he came on and have never found him on a census. Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net

    3. Joe, I'm using www.stevemorse.org. I'm pretty sure it's the same search engines as jewishgen.org. There are very few results for Ferenczi (Ferenczy, Ferency, etc) Karoly and the ones I did find that I did consider, the ages are off by like 10 yrs. I have searched for draft records, no luck. I have not yet tried naturalizations records because I'm not positive where he took his papers out from. I was hoping I could find him on the manifest, but since I don't seem to be able to, I will go for the naturalization records. I do have his marriage lisense coming in the mail anytime now, so hopefully that will list his birthplace. It's just very frustrating when I am almost positive he came through Ellis Island but I can't find record of it. There are many posts on radix forum on this surname, so it must be a pretty common name, yet I found so few on the Ellis Island manifests. Thanks for your help. The search continues.............. 3. I thought Karoly was the equivalent of Charles. I found on the web tonight that Kalman was the equivalent of Charles. Are they both? My gggrandpa's name was Ferenczi Karoly, but he went by Charles Ferency. I'm trying to find him on the Ellis Island ship manifest. I thought I had found him, but now I'm not so sure. I have tried searching EI reversing the names and inputting them correctly. The ages don't match up very well. I think a ten year age difference is a bit much, but I could be wrong. I have tried several different spellings, but I'm not thrilled with the results. His headstone says he was born in 1877, and two different census records give his imm. date as 1.) 1908 2.) 189? . I'm sure he was single when he arrived in the US. and the first place he was found on the 1920 census was NY. He married my gggrandmother there. I did find a Charles Ferency in Cuyahoga, Oh. in 1910, but I'm not sure it's him. Is there another name he may have used instead of Karoly? He had a brother who stayed in Hungary. I was told his name was Julius, but I'm not sure that's a Hungarian name. It may be the English version. Does anyone know the Hungarian equivalent of Julius? I'm so lost in finding his EI manifest! Anne

    1. Three Steve Morse Announcements
    2. Elizabeth V Cardinal
    3. Posted on another list Steve Morse has updated his One-Step form that searches ancestry.com's Boston Passenger Arrivals database. The database now covers 1820-1943, whereas it previously included only 1891-1943. Steve generated a list of all of the M277 roll numbers and dates to allow access to the manifest directly by roll/frame or by date using the One-Step "Searching the Boston Passenger Lists in One Step." He also extended his list of all of the Boston ship arrivals for the One-Step form that searches for ship arrivals, "Searching for Ships in the Boston Microfilms in One Step," so that it now covers the entire 1820-1943 period. Both are listed under "Other Ports of Immigration" at http://www.stevemorse.org. Steve also just created a One-Step form for searching zabasearch.com. He now has four One-Step forms capable of obtaining birthday information. The other three are for ancestry.com, birthdatabase.com, and privateeye.com/peoplefinders.com. They are the first four items listed in the "Births, Deaths, and other Vital Records" section at (http://www.stevemorse.org). Steve also just implemented two new features on his One-Step search form "Converting Address to Latitude/Longitude." Retitled "Converting Address to/from Latitude/Longitude in One Step, " you can now also convert in the opposite direction - from latitude/longitude to an address. You can now also convert more than one address or more than one latitude/longitude at a time by using Batch Mode. The One-Step is listed under "Calendar, Sunrise/Sunset, Maps" at http://www.stevemorse.org. At first blush, this may not seem to have much to do with genealogy, but Steve has found that the latitude/longitude search tool gets a very large number of hits.

    3. Hello list, I started by joining the list on the 24th on the 25th I hit the pot of gold. I got an e-mail from Shelia Chonko that turned out to be from a member of the family. Wow what a surpris. I started the search for my granddaughter who wanted information on all of her family. I told her all that I could remember, but that wasn't enough for her so I went to the list. Shelia has been sending information that amazes me and for which I am eternally grateful. I have been searching my direct family in England and Ireland and have requested information from their lists but have never gotten the results as I have from the Hungarian List. Again Thank You, Thank You. Al NM __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
