Margaret, Re your inquiry Has anyone tried to get Hungarian records out of Romania? .... I assume you mean by " Hungarian records out of Romania" those Parish and Civil Records for areas that are now in Romania but were part of Hungary prior to 1918 or so. If this is the case, for all practical purposes, the Parish Records that have survived are in the Romanian National Archives and the Civil Records (after 1895 I believe, but please check) are held in the "town halls" where the event took place. Let me use my personal experience as an example. My family was from Szatmar. I obtained birth and death records for them in the National Archives in Satu Mare, Romania (previously Szatmar, Hungary). To the best of my knowledge you cannot obtain copies of records by mail or other means than someone appearing in person at the Archives and doing the research personally. The Archives can be visited by appointment by a Romanian citizen or a non citizen previously registered to do so. I hired professional genealogist registered to review Archive documents. On one visit, I accompanied him and we waited two days to gain permission for access for a four hour period. Regarding the civil records, I obtained the birth record for my father (born 1907) through the Romanian Embassy. I had the exact date and town in which he was born and for a fee, a copy was finally received. What is ironic is that while in Satu Mare I visited the village hall in the town where my father was born and shown the actual birth record for my father but could not obtain a copy. I had to request the same through the Romanian Embassy after returning to the States. I strongly suggest that you employ a professional genealogist registered "to do business" at the Romanian National Archives to obtain records there unless you have Romanian relatives or friends in the immediate area who could search the Archives for you. Hope this helps! Jerry
Dear List, I would like to ask your help about my distant relative. She was Miss Israel or something else, Im not sure, but she was a beauty queen in the 20th century (maybe the first half of it). Her given name was Jaffa (???). I just know, that her mother was Zsenka Kurtag. Anyone has an idea? Maybe a book about the "World Beauty Queens" or something like that? Has anyone tried to get Hungarian records out of Romania? I recently heard from the Archives in Hungary and I can purchase a film of my fathers village still in Hungary but my mothers village in now in Romania. I would like to know if anyone has had a contact with officials there? Perhaps an e-mail address? I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has tried to find records and was successful or not successful. Thank you. Margaret
Checking to see if this is still the web page
Is anyone on the list have German ancestors that settled in Zemplen Megye? Mine came from Germany in the late 1700's and settled in Hosszulaz, Satoraljauhely, etc. I was told they were Donauschwaben, but I cannot find any information on Danube Schwabians in Zemplen Megye. Everything is about the Schwabians that settled in lower Hungary. I did come across a site about Carpathian Germans in Slovakia and now I'm confused.....( as always! lol) Is anyone else working on Germans in Zemplen who knows anything about the history of this area? Thanks. Anne
Have you tried a search on google using her name? If she was a Miss Israel then she may have been in the Miss Universe pageant. You may want to see if they have any records. Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net

Slovakia, Village of Ladmovce (Ladamocz - Hungarian) Hi Marshall, I assume you got your information from this person's web site: Nachi (Menachem) Keren (Kratz)- Israel, Februar 2001 nachi_k@yahoo.com Have you tried getting in touch with him? I have tried locating the author, whom I found, but the title of the book (as given on Menachem web site) is wrong. The correct title is: A magyar hadviselt zsidók aranyalbuma az 1914-1918-as világháború emlékére. Also searching for a Transylvania (Hungarian) periodical in Máramarossziget in 1970 I came up empty handed. You can try an inquiry to the OSZK (Országos Széchényi Könyvtár or National Széchényi Library), in English, about the book (Raktári jelzet 95.130), they have it, but they don't release it except for researchers (and likely don't let it out of their premises): http://www.oszk.hu/frame_en.htm?eng/kapcsolat/kapcsolat_index_en.htm As far as I know Interlibrary Loan - within European countries - does not extend to the US. I searched LOC for you and they have one copy as well: http://catalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?Search_Arg=magyar+hadviselt+zsid%C3%B3k+aranyalbuma+az+1914-1918-as+vil%C3%A1gh%C3%A1bor%C3%BA+eml%C3%A9k%C3%A9re.&Search_Code=TALL&PID=22401&SEQ=20060309025026&CNT=25&HIST=1 Joe Equinunk, PA - USA jjarfas@ezaccess.net

I've tried local library systems, Carnegie Library and Google to no avail. These are the titles: Book: "Aranyalbum- a magyar hadviselt zsidoc"-az. 1914-1918 as vilaghaboru emlekere. By: Hegedus Marton, Budapest, 1941. Periodical: "Maramarosziget" oct. 1970. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
