Thank you all for your help. It is much more clearer now. It gets pretty complicated sometimes, due to diferent languages (as unfortunately I dont speak magyar) and different geographical and political ways. Here is what Geza Varga explained in her answer: Czepel Czillagtelep, Hęp (im sorry i dont know how to put that "v accent" over the e) 5 lép 11/2 Csepel (=21th district) Csillagtelep (name of a local area), H ép. (Building H), 5th "staircase" (i.e. set of flats accessible through the same staircase), No. 11/2 (might mean 11th floor No. 2 but not sure) and now I must ask, wasn't necesary to write down the street name? Cause in no letter comes the street name, which I supposed was Hép, but now that theory doesnt work any more. Im glad I have joined this group :) Anything I can do for you, count on me. Thanks again, Maria Eugenia On 3/23/06, Geza Varga <ozma_mama@yahoo.co.uk> wrote: > > > Hello, > > kerület is district. > > XXI. kerület is 21st district. My husband and I have just returned from Hungary where we participated in the celebration of the March 15 beginning of the 1848-49 War of Liberation. I, too, was exceedingly embarrassed when I was informed that Bush actually associated Lajos Kossuth with the '56 Revolution. The two ceremonies in which we participated (in Budapest on the 14th and in Aszód on the 15th) made no reference whatever to the '56 Revolution. Although a reading of Bush's speech did not specifically mention Kossuth at all, it was unfortunate that references were made to the 1956 Revolution. The impression was that he was actually confusing the two events and that he had no idea who Kossuth was. Though many of the Hungarian we met there did not speak English, they all knew one word--STUPID! Janet Kozlay
Hi again, hope you are doing well. I am needing help from people living in Budapest. I need to understand two addresses because Budapest is divided into sections and something I don't understand as kerület. I have this two addresses which I would thank very much if you tell if they are near or how to look them up in a budapest map. Budapest XXI. kerület 1214, Hengerész utca Czepel Czillagtelep, Hêp (im sorry i dont know how to put that "v accent" over the e) 5 lép 11/2 I hope you can help me with this. Regards, Maria Eugenia
Looking for descendants of Martin Kurtej, b. Martin Koren in Liptovska Osada in Slovakia about 1889. Family lore indicates he was an Austro-Hungarian gendarme; sent to (imprisoned in?) Siberia, returned (released?) to live in Hungary. No dates. We have an undated picture of him in a uniform. My wife's maternal grandmother was his sister. Jim Archer Olympia, WA
I have a perplexing problem using FTM ...wanting to be PERFECTLY accurate I have been adding special characters to make my names accurate... e.g. á Ö é etc. by using info I received from this site(?), but didn't include the double accent '' that is required on some words, such as Gyor...Gyor I went to Windows XP Character Map and found it... used it and it appeared to work, but once I leave the entry it reverts to the character WITHOUT the double accent. Has anyone found a "workaround" for this problem?? I have even put the word on the Clipboard and moved it to other entries..but again, the double accent disappears. Thanks in advance for your suggestions Jim Lakatos

Hi, my name is Maria Eugenia Kromholc. I was born and actually live in Argentina. I have been researching for my ancestors for a long time by now. My granparents were born in former Austro Hungarian Empire just about the beginning of the 20th century. My grandfather was czech (as it states in the records I possess) born in what today is known as Kokava nad Rimavicou. My grandmother was hungarian from Feled, now Jesenské. I would really like to share information with you, just to better know about their traditions, and all they might have lived before coming to Argentina. I must say that I didn't get the chance to meet anyone of them, unfortunately. I will also like to exchange with all of you any suggestions about my (for what I have read up to now) german surname, anything about its origins, and how come the same not so common surname ended up in jewish and lutherans branches. For what I know, none of my relatives were jews, but have found many many Krumholz, Kromholtz, and all its possible variations from Poland and being jewish. Well, I think that will make for introducing myself. Hope I havent bored you too much. Hoping to hear from you soon, Regards, Maria
Yes it is a great site or would be if I could figure out how to open the articles. For example I wanted to read todays weather report and couldn't figure out how to open it. What am I missing? Elizabeth V. Cardinal evc1369@comcast.net
Hi All, The following site appeared in the context of an Email Jerry recently sent. It's a GREAT site!!!! :) > _http://english.mti.hu/default.asp?menu=1&theme=2&cat=25&newsid=216821_ > (http://english.mti.hu/default.asp?menu=1&theme=2&cat=25&newsid=216821) I value being able to read news from a Hungarian perspective - in English! Does anyone know of a similar site for Slovak & Czech News - in English?? Thanks, Elaine
Hi All, Actually, I don't consider the topic of "current event" or "historical subjects" off topic on a Genealogy site. Our Ancestors lived in a Socio-Economic-Politial timeframe, just like we do. :) Therefore, info about the mid 1800 Hungarian Revolution, the 1956 Revolution, as well as how those in present day Hungary view America or those of us in the America's view Hungary is, from my perspective, relevant on a Genealogy Site. Many, on both sides of the Atlantic, have bravely fought for political freedom to govern themselves. A part of that "fight" has been for Freedom of Speech!!! From my perspective, "current events", "historic subjects", "religion" & "Socio-Economic-Politial" topics ARE very much a part of the "context of genealogy". Let's keep it civil, but let's NOT limit our "Freedom of Speech" on this site or any other! Thank you, Elaine PS: out of this political discussion, someone posted a link to a Hungarian news source in English. I'm very appreciative to now know about that site. I'll check in with it often to broaden my understanding of present day Hungary as well as how Hungarian's in Hungary view the present world. **************************************************************************** ************************************************ > > >

I was 13 years old when this happened and remember it well plus my disappointment with Eisenhower's not sending help. NE Ohio received many of those who fled and I have met many over the course of my life. I do take exception with those who expressed the thought that the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave would've dropped in paratroopers. You do not know that, it is pure speculation. After all, there is no oil in Hungary, just beautiful rolling plains. His conduct in office has been to not protect us from 9/11 - remember it happened on his watch! The air squadrons that were to have been scrambled were ordered down that day. And, coupled with his comments that the Constitution is just a g--d--- scrap of paper says quite clearly that he doesn't respect the Constitution, that document that those of us who have served in the armed forces of our country swore to protect and defend. Remember, he went AWOL from the TANG and his papers showed that he refused to serve ! in Vietnam. a proud descendant of Zemplen province, Vern (Tobias) Hall (my mother remarried)

My great-grandfather spent what looks like 13 yrs in the Dayton State Insane Asylum. I rec'd his records in the mail a few days ago. They are missing the later year records which would show when his actual discharge was. From the records I rec'd, it looks like he went on trial visits for a few months at a time. Each trial visit was a discharge and then a readmission. The last discharge was for 1927, but I do not know if that was his final discharge. I cannot find him there on the 1930 census, so he either died sometime between 1927-1930, or he left on his own accord. I can't find him on the 1930 census anywhere. He evidentally had some contact with his son, who was raised in an orphanage, because the records indicate an address of his son in Detroit and that son didn't move to Detroit until 1925. I was sent a death cert for a Mike Printz who died in Cuyahoga Co, Oh, but this is not my Mihaly Sprencz. The name was very often interchanged between Sprencz and Princz/Printz. He is not buried at the Calvary Cemetary in the family plot with his brother, who he was so close to. He was not buried at the insane asylum cemetery. He was not living with his son in 1930. So, where did he go? Would he have gone back to Hungary? I thought for sure these newest records would give me some clues as to his whereabouts, but it's only generated more unanswered questions. PS. Mihaly's records indicate that he had seen a fortune teller, and what she/he told him weighed heavy on his mind and was the reason for his admission to the insane asylum. Was this sort of thing popular in Hungary? Believing in fortune tellers? Any ideas? Anne
