    3. I asked about the maps in response to someone who wrote me from the Slovak Roots mail list. I had suggested that she print the maps and then have Kinko's enlarge them, but your suggestion is even better. Thanks. 2. d pfalzer
    3. The steppes are in southern Russia. Many peoples migrated from East to West across that region into Europe. I am now able to be more specific -- I found quite a nice map on p56 of _The_New_York_Times_Atlas_. It has an area labelled "Kirghiz Steppe". It is in the region, I described above. It is north of the Black Sea, north of the Caspian sea, running almost to western China. It might be worth a try putting Kirghiz Steppe into a search engine. > From: Elayne Landau <magyar4321869@yahoo.com> > To: HUNGARY-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: Re: HUNGARY-D Digest V06 #98 > > Where geographically in Asia is the stepps? 3. Sorry, I meant to add these two links of interest to my previous message. - list of RootsWeb's various surname and regional DNA lists - http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/DNA/ http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/DNA/GENEALOGY-DNA.html - a general DNA discussion list. I see by the archives this list can be very technical when discussing their results as well it generates between 1000 and 2000 messages a month, so you may want to browse through the archives for interest. --------------------------------- Win a BlackBerry device from O2 with Yahoo!. 3. William, I personally haven't taken part in this project but have been following it with great interest. DNA and genealogy has really taken off, while many poo hoo the idea. Several of the RootsWeb surname lists I'm on have started projects for the surnames though http://www.familytreedna.com/ and are very pleased with the results they get. There's also a gentleman on the RootsWeb BANAT (Donuschawbean) list who has very recently started a project for people who have ancestors from the Banat region in Europe. A non-Hungarian friend of mine has taken part in a surname DNA test from the above named website with very interesting results being put in contact with at least two new Scottish cousins whom he found out grew up within a few miles of each other in Scotland. I've been able to share how thrilled this gentleman has been with his results. You'll note on the National Geographic website provided by another lister , they state their database is really not for tracing your ancestors. The familytree dna testing is much more thorough with many more identifying factors provided for finding cousins. My friend found out, once he got his results from familytree dna, for an additional $15.00 he could submit his DNA results from familytree dna to the National Geographic Society to be added to their data base and receive their analysis. He feels for $15.00 he has the best of both worlds as he couldn't do it in reverse by doing the National Geographic testing first. The results are completely different from both testings, and very interesting indeed. Advice from my friend would be to read up on the various DNA tests available and know exactly what you're expecting from the testing and choose the right test for your interests. He thought it was very reasonable that the National Geographic would accept the other testings. He's just glad he did the familytree dna testing first. 3. Hi William... I took part in the Genographic project several months ago...really enjoyed the DVD that was included in the kit - very intriguing. I received my results (Haplogroup V) - although I am not entirely sure what to make of it! I gave a kit to my Dad - he's all Magyar - and waiting to get his results.
