    3. Lynn, There are various ways of doing this but the easiest way I have found is using a program called " Unicode Keyboard" by Fanix Software. You can download the program at : http://www.fanix.com/ It is free to try for 30 days and then you can buy it for $19.95. It can be used to type characters in any Latin-based language. It is easy to use and I think it works great.Well worth the money. 3. My grandfather, Jozsef Csanadi (listed as Csanad on manifest) emmigrated from Gelse, Zala Megye, Hungary on April 4, 1912. He was born August 5, 1893. His ship, the Zeeland, docked in Portland, Maine and he took a train to Hamilton, Ontario. He came back to the US in 1914 (though I cannot find the record, the date is listed on his Naturalization papers). The story goes that his name was changed at the Canadian border to Joseph Chonody. He had a sister, Anna. I assume she stayed in Hungary. I am looking for all family in Hungary. Thanks. Debi Chonody Ross

    1. KOCSIS and ESTOK
    2. Janet Kozlay
    3. Mary Ann, Although you didn't give your mother's name, I believe it was Mary, born April 20, 1913. Mary Kocsis returned from Hungary in 1937, age 23, single, and apparently not traveling with family or friends. She gave her home address as 520 Christiancy Street, Lansing. Interestingly, that is the same address as the Estok family in the 1930 Census. The Estok family had several sons, one of whom was the same age as Mary. While it is possible that the families were related, it could also be that they were close friends. In the 1920 Census the Estok family lived on River Road in Lansing. I do not find the Kocsis family in any of the Census records, nor their immigration records. I hope this is at least a little help. She died in 1976. Her maiden name was Kocsis (which now I realize is somewhat common). Her father's name was Antony Kocsis (some place I found Anton ) and her mother was Anna Lemak Kocsis. Anna mother was Mary Giscsek from Veszprem, Hungary. Anthony Kocsis mother was Elizabeth Markos born 1730 died 1750. Mother had one (or two when mother spoke about her family)sister name Anna. A. and Anna Kocsis lived in Michigan (mother was born in Lansing in 1913). They went back to Hungary and before WWII my mother came back to the US. I THINK somehow the Kocsis is related to the Estok from Lansing, MI because when we had a family vacation to MI, mother went to Lansing and looked up Estok in the phone book and preceded to talk in Hungarian and then we went to visit Helen Estok who passed away in 1991. I've tried everything I know to look up and see if I have any relatives (my father passed in 2004). Any help! would be greatly appreciated. 1. New Hungarian Film of potential interest
    2. Joe Felt
    3. "FATELESS" Touching tale of holocaust in Hungary editorial@hamhigh.co.uk 05 May 2006 The massacre of a large part of Hungarian Jewry is one of the great crimes of European history. "Fateless" tells part of the terrible story, based on an autobiographical novel by Imre Kertesz, who won the Nobel prize for literature in 2002. It has been released in America, to much critical acclaim. The film centres on a nice curly-headed boy, Gyuri (Marcell Nagy). When the film opens, he, his family and friends in Budapest are wearing large yellow stars. His father has been ordered to a forced labour camp. Jewish boys on country buses are rounded up. They join the adults, who are told that they are being sent to a labour camp in Germany. In fact, they are taken by train to Auschwitz extermination camp, in Poland. The boy goes on briefly to Buchenwald and, then to Zeitz, a labour camp in Saxony-Anhalt. Much of the film is concerned with Zeitz - barracks lice-ridden and overcrowded, endless parades - reminiscent of POW films - cruelty, a hanging, hunger, humiliation, pain, illness, deaths. Some scenes are truly appalling. Some events are inexplicable, or, at least, unexplained. When Gyuri is liberated, he goes back to heavily-damaged and Russian-occupied Budapest. Surprisingly, he looks back on the camps through rose-tinted spectacles. This is one boy's story, rather than an account of the Holocaust in Hungary, so some background might be helpful. Although the policies of the Regent, Admiral Horthy, were anti-semitic, and there were some dreadful massacres, until Germany had occupied Hungary, in March 1944, he had resisted Hitler's demands to deport the Jews. After the occupation, Eichmann and the SS took charge. The transports to Auschwitz began on May 15 1944, two months later. By this time it had become inevitable that Germany would lose the war - the D-Day landings took place on 6 June - and the true nature of what was happening in Auschwitz had just been revealed. On July 6 1944, under international pressure, Admiral Horthy told the Germans that he had stopped the transports. Killings by right-wing Hungarians continued. In all, about 550,000 Hungarian Jews perished. There are some wonderful films in the Holocaust genre - including Liev Schreiber's "Everything Is Illuminated," released last year. On a small scale, and on a small budget, Schreiber's film poignantly evoked tragic events. "Fateless", with the largest budget ever for an Hungarian film, is not in the same class. It is not particularly well-made. The editing is odd and, in the first half of the film especially, there is much that seems mawkish and even inauthentic. Some characters are stereotypes, some actors seem inappropriate for their roles. But the tale it tells is so powerfully that it is impossible to leave the cinema unmoved. FATELESS (12A) (SORSTALANSAG) Director Lajos Koltai Starring Marcell Nagy 140 minutes Hungarian with subtitles

There are other towns, Gorsony, Farkasd, Jhaszi, and a few others. These towns are in the counties of Gyor and Vesprem. With our buddy Joe on vacation, there are some location errors to clean up but there are over 18000 records. I have put this into an Excel spreadsheet and am willing to share. If anyone would like the file sent to them, please email me privately. Would the person who is researching OLAH please let me know as I have noted the records for that surname. Thanks! Angela
