    1. LDS films
    2. Cheryl and Keith, the last time I went to our nearest Family History Center to review the LDS film of Bakonykuti, Hungary which I had rented, they had a new computer where we could load the film into the computer and save the images to a disk (bring your own, or purchase one of theirs). Then you can bring it home, put your disk into your computer, view the pages and print out whichever ones you want on your printer. At the time, there was no cost involved, however, it would seem to me there should have been if for nothing else but maintain the upkeep on that filmreader, computer, printer, etc. The only problem at the time was determining how many images/pages your disk could hold. We loaded too many and did not get some of the copies we wanted the first time. Perhaps by now the volunteers have learned how much you can put on one disc. I am not very computer literate/savy but others may know how this is determined. Anyway we eventually downloaded the entire film onto 3-4 discs which I have at home to view whenever I get time. Someday! And, yes, as Cheryl said you later come across other cousins, etc., as your research continues. Sue Schumpf

    3. Dear Mandy, If Lajos was born in 1931, he will not be in the LDS records as they do not extend that far. However, contacting the Fenyvesi's in Szentes might be helpful. Janet

    3. Szentes is in Csongrad megye, south of Budapest. There are extensive microfilmed church records for Szentes available through LDS. As long as you know his religion, it should be an easy matter to find Lajos's birth record. There are 7 messages on the Radix Forum regarding this family (http://www.radixforum.com/surnames/fenyvesi), though they are all in Hungarian. One of them mentions an association with Csongrad, and several mention a Lajos. There are two Fenyvesi people listed in the Szentes phone directory today (see http://www.magyartelekom.hu/english/main.vm). The major problem you may encounter is that Fenyvesi is a fairly common name in Hungary, so there is no assurance that others with that name will be related. Good luck. Janet

    3. Keith, This may not particularly be of help to you, but I had considered hiring a genealogist for my village of Goncruszka. Instead I ordered the lds films (at a cost of around $3.45) after renewing the films three times, they keep the films at that library. Because I was moving at the time and I did not know how close my lds library would be, I decided to print the records out. I am so glad that I did. (though it is not cheap.....either 10 cents or 25 cents per copy)......but I found out so much more information that I thought that I could get thru a professional. For example, you get the house numbers......A REALLY big help.....as you can get other names of people that are connected to that family) You have the copies to keep forever and are forever finding new clues. cheryl BALOG wenberg ----- Original Message ----- From: Keith Gunn To: HUNGARY-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, June 03, 2006 5:00 AM Subject: [HUNGARY-L] Professional researchers Can anyone help, please? 1. Where to start?
    2. Mandy
    3. I've done quite a bit of work on my own family tree, but I'd love to get some work done on my husband's Hungarian side. His father has been very closed lipped about much of his family history (and he doesn't seem to want to help me either, which makes me more interested of course!). I know that he was born Lajos FENYVESI in Szentes, in Transylvania July 31, 1931 and he grew up in Budapest. His father was some type of industrialist who was supposedly involved with a china/stoneware manufacturer for awhile and they seemed to be fairly well off. During the war they weren't as badly affected as my British father, and I assume that my husband's grandfather must have been working with the Germans at that time. After the war ended, some men came to the door and took him away, and he was never seen again. I'm not clear enough on the history to really know what that means, but I have my suspicions. This may be the root of my father in laws reluctance but I'm not sure. His mother remarried a BALINT and had one more son afterwards. My father in law escaped Hungary during his mandatory military service by (so he tells us) stealing a plane and flying it till it ran out of fuel over Germany. His mother was Ilona KIRALY and he had an uncle (Laszlo KIRALY) in Budapest until just a few years ago. I know nothing more about them. His father was also Lajos FENYVESI. Since my father in law was born in Transylvania, they could have been there. My father in law says that after the war a lot of Jews took the name FENYVESI, but that he is from the last remaining "true" FENYVESI's. DNA testing on my DH doesn't indicate any Jewish ancestry, so atleast part of that is true. So where would you start??? Thanks! Siannach

    3. Greetings to all; After arriving back in the States on the 24th of May - and delivering my last guest halfway to the airport yesterday (who was flying back to Budapest) - I'm getting a bit of time to rest and catch up with the list. Will let the individuals who asked me to help them know of the results in the next few days. Joe Equinunk, PA - USA jjarfas@ezaccess.net

    3. Hi Bill I have found the wonderful volunteers at www.Freelang.org very helpful. Here's the hyperlink to the appropriate section of their website http://www.freelang.net/php/usr_contact.php3 to request a translation by a volunteer. Generally, the translators respond via email within a few days (if not sooner) with your translation. They provide translation -both ways - of most of my communications with people in Hungary (including family). It's a fantastic service they provide and they cover many, many languages. Good luck! 3. Dear listers ! As far as I have been able to progress in a rather long time, my family name originates in Croatia. To support this, I have the following : My great-grandfather Stefan KEMENDICS was born in Nemeth-Boly in 1871. In the films for this parish I have found two other siblings ( 1867, 1868 ) of his parents. Which were Michael KEMENDICS and Rosa SZABADOS. There was no other information - at least nothing that would help me any. Four years ago I´ve had a short contact with two men who told me that their ancestors lived in a small village near Nemeth Boly but both families moved "back" to the area of "ESZEK" ( today OSJEK ) where they originated from. I have lost this contact after a short time and I don´t speak any of the local languages. Does anybody have any information for a similar situation ???? Thank you very much for ANY hints ! Wilhelm Kemendics
