Betty: When I went to Hungary, I took a photo album of my grandfather's family, including pictures of their homes and post cards from their home towns. I gave the album to the oldest member of my grandfather's family. Everyone in the family was so pleased to have such a personal gift. And now, when I write emails and give them family updates, they go to the album to match the names in my emails to the names/photos in the album. I am lucky that I have a very creative family and thanks to their handiwork, we took a variety of handmade Christmas ornaments and gave one to each family. Hope this helps. Have a great trip. I want to tell the list that I have had great success in finding my Bozoki family. Actually they found me after a couple of years of putting queries on the Hungary message boards as well as the Romanian ones. The area of Hungary where they lived in now in Romania. (Transylvania actually) Remember Hungary got divided up several times. I am in constant contact with Maria Bozoki Urdea, who works as a Nurse in a Children's Hospital in Oradea, Bihar Co.,Romania(Nagyvarad in Hungarian). Maria said that among the Hungarians, they always use the Hungary name for the villages. Her father Laszlo Bozoki, Jr. had been the Mayor of Koros-Tarkany (Tarcaia in Romanian). His widow, Esxter or Esther is still alive at 72 and is thrilled that we have all made contact. Also I am in contact with AnnaMaria Bozoki Trippon, who also has a daughter, AnnaMaria. So I am now in the process of trying to put the name to the faces and because they have already sent many pictures to me. (The naming is as frustrating as the Germans). They even sent pictures of our family when the boys were little that were sent to them by my mother-in-law. It has truly been amazing. Exactly like our experience with the Topp family in Estonia a couple of years ago. I cannot impress you all enough about the importance of using QUERIES in our research. I teach that in all my classes and have had so much luck in using them. On the Hungarian Bozoki family, I have put numerous queries on all the message boards and lists that I could find. It has taken several years on this family BUT the important thing is it has been successful! Just had to tell you all about my happy week. The Courier Connellsville, Pa. 9-17-1891 A Hungarian Romance Mt. Pleasant was the scene of a Hungarian romance last week, Andrew HELFOTA? HELFOLA?, a Morewood miner, courted Mary HOVANCE, several years ago. But Mary's parents, having accumulated a trunkful of silver dollars, went back to the old country taking Mary with them. Andre kept up a loving correspondence, and finally proposed marriage, Mary acceded. Andrew pledged his faith and credit for money to pay her passage hence. She arrived one day last week, but a handsomer man named Valent YANCKO appeared upon the scene at this critical juncture and stole the fickle Mary's heart away. They were weded and the heart of Andrew was soothed by a promise to repay the passage money for which he had become responsible.
There is another plausible town--Huntsdale PA. The record pretty clearly indicates a "t" in there. Though not necessarily probative, Huntsdale is closer to Gallitzin, where Joseph is living in 1900, than Honesdale is. The Courrier Connellsville, Pa. Sept. 17,1897 Joseph HOVANIECZ A sad accident occurred at the Trotter Mine of the H.C. Frick Coke company Monday morning, Joseph HOVANIECZ, a Hungarian miner, was literally strangled to death while calling piteously for help which could not be given him. HOVANIECZ and J. C. WHITNEY another miner, were at work, when without warning, a large portion of the roof fell down. Both men were caught under the mass of slate and coal, the Hungarian being pinned to the ground by the neck and chest. He was unable to free himself, and in this predicament began to call loudly for help. The slate continued to fall in sections and although assistance was near at hand no person could either enter under the threatening mass. The mine officials at once began to brace up the roof with posts and it was thought that the Hun could be rescued, as his condition was not known. For half an hour his cries could be heard, and at the end of that time a body of rescuers had set up posts and they went to him. It was too late HOVANIECZ had been strangled to death by the weight upon him. WHITNEY was rescued, he having received no fatal injuries. He was taken home. The unfortunate Hun had been in this country for some years and was joined here by his wife from the old country only six months ago. He was 30 years old. He was a member of the St. John Church in New Haven and funeral services were held there yesterday. The remains were interred in the St. John Cemetery. Deceased did not belong to any of the Slavish societies of this vicinity.
HI, several years ago I asked for help locating a marriage license for Elizabeth SZAKACS MICU and Steve KOPTON. The family said they were married in Illinois, divorce records say January 23, 1945. I have tried Cook and Will Counties in Illinois with no luck. Also Lake and Porter in Indiana. Does anyone have any ideas where else I should look. They both lived all there lives in East Chicago, Indiana up until that date. I am not real good on the computer so it is hard for me to find a lot of this stuff online. Calls to some of the funeral homes that are extant, will lead to information on where records are for years past; some of the cemetery info in the obits will also give me leads.
