The Southtown Economist Chicago, Ill. Mar. 27, 1940 At 104 Arpad SABADOS Is Indeed An Unusual Man By Claire DANZIGER Arpad SABADOS of 3717 W. 68th. Place, celebrated his 104th. birthday on Monday. He cleans his teeth with whiskey. He shuns all fruits and vegetables in favor of juicy red meats. He walks about two miles a day. He smokes fat cigars. He thinks medicines are superfluous and the few times he has been ill in his long life he has relied instead on leeches to "draw the bad blood out." He chops wood and keeps the grapevines pruned. He likes to drink about five "shots" of bourbon a day. And he says to grow old gracefully and healthy is never to work hard. That in brief, is Arpad SABADOS, the wonder man of Chicago Lawn, who in his own fashion, completely overthrows all popular notions of the elderly person as a benign, quiet, sit by the fire type. Of striking appearance, Mr. SABADOS is staunchly erect, every bit of his six feet, two inches of height carried like a ramrod. A mane of neatly combed white hair tops alert blue eyes which have never worn glasses. "I used to weigh 270 pounds when I was a young man," he says laughingly, "but now I'm down to only 241." Arpad's amazing verve and spirit is a carryover from the days, many long years ago, when he fought in the name of Hungarian independence, all over the world. He was born March 25, 1836, in a tiny village in Hungary called Lucence. His father was a general in the Army, a rank second only to nobility in the old world. Young SABADOS was one of the Kossuth honor soldiers. As the loosely knit, ill-compacted nation sustained repeated shocks after the revolution. SABADOS fought for his country in the Crimean war in Russia and the Italian war in 1859, both of which showed up his country's military weakness. In 1862 he and several other loyal Hungarians formed a delegation to visit the US and ask Abraham Lincoln for help in the liberation of their country. But the US was caught up in the turmoil of a civil war of its own. SABADOS went back to Hungary, but intrigued with the success of democracy across the waters, returned a short time later to make his home in the US, and take to himself a wife. "I was a young man of 41 when I married" he said. He then began a farming career, buying and selling farms throughout the Middle West. He would purchase a rundown farm, rejuvnate it and sell it. It was only about 8 years ago at the age of 96 when his wife died that he gave up all connection with his farm business. He went to live with Mr. and Mrs. Peter MIHALJEVICH in the pleasant little 68th. place home. Indicative of the oldster's stamina is a feat that would make the spirits of a person of any age cringe. About a month ago, the elderly gentleman complained of a toothache. He still has his own original set of teeth. Refusing to go to a dentist, he instead walked into the tool shed, took down the garden pliers, then calmly yanked out the offending front tooth.
Please give us the URL for the website were we can find all your hard work. Thanks And good look with Hanna and Ike. Neither one can make up there minds as to where they are heading per our 5 o'clock weather update. Elizabeth V. Cardinal [email protected]

I was born in that coal mining town in 1935 so it seemed a good project to post on the coal miners' memorial site and the township site. . Oh my, the names. There were many Hungarians and Czechs. I struggled with the names and the poor handwriting. I just hope I did okay. I do want to thank all of you for your help some months ago with Hungarian research and teaching me some of the names and languages that were used. Hi, I grew up in Florida. It's HOT in Florida in Sept! And muggy! But it usually rains in the afternoon to cool things off, very refreshing. Looks like Hanna will go up the east coast, and Ike may go into the gulf, but not for days yet. Are you tripping over to DisneyWorld? Go in the morning, take a break to your motel in the afternoon, and return to DW about 5. I went to the Ringling Museum (as in the circus family.) in Sarasota, oh, years ago. It's a fascinating place and it has some big Reubens' as its stars. Enjoy your time in Florida! And, of course, being the Coast Guard, they have lots of "on the water" activities planned for us. We are watching the Hurricane weather sites with baited breath. I was raised in Jersey, so hurricanes are not new to me. What is your current take on the situation? Are there enough indoorsy things to do if it is constantly raining? Just thought I'd put out a feeler in case you are willing to offer a comment or suggestions. I have found several records on Jewishgen in the Hungary Census Records, 1781-1850, database that might be my great great great great grandfather. The reference numbers all begin with MOL,DJ(C55). What are these records and is there a way to look at specific ones? Thank you. Sheri Prager Sebastopol, California
Jamene, I would like to expand on Marika's suggestion of putting up a large Hungarian-area map and let everyone identify where their ancestors came from. Instead of sticking a thumb tack on the village -- Take a long sewing pin (with round head) and wrap a small self-adhesive label around the top, number them, have a guest register with numbers for them to sign in. If you have name tags, place that guest's number on it also. This way you can suggest each guest find another numbered guest from their area of Austria-Hungary. Or, if they would be eating, someone call out the numbers in a certain area and have them stand so they can see whomever else is from that area. (Just a conversation starter.) Good luck in your efforts. Sue **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Find your travel deal here. (http://information.travel.aol.com/deals?ncid=aoltrv00050000000047)
I would like everyone on the list to be aware of an on line newspaper published in Connecticut: www.magyarnews.org This replaces a newspaper, Magyar News, that was published in Bridgeport by Joseph Balogh and distributed by him for over 25 years! Luckily, his friends would not allow it to die off, so although Joseph is in his 80s, he still writes and submits photos, and has others doing the bulk of the work. He has been an amazing historian over the years, educating people here as to what is actually going on over there, as well as history and genealogy info. Keep this page on file and refer to it as they constantly update it. Jamene Farrell

Thursday, September 4, 2008 11:00AM EDT - Go, Hanna, Go! A quick update... After meandering over the <http://stormcarib.com/reports/current/tci.shtml> Turks & Caicos over the last couple of days it finally looks like <http://stormcarib.com/adv3.htm> Hanna is inching to the north. It's about time. The large outflow of Hanna has caused enough flooding (again) in <http://stormcarib.com/reports/current/haiti.shtml> Haiti and surrounding areas. Hanna looks a bit better organized on the satellite images and might strengthen again into a hurricane. As Hanna continues its northwestward trajectory, hurricanes watches have been posted to some coastal areas in South Carolina and North Carolina. Tropical storm watches remain in effect from Edisto Beach South Carolina southward to Altamaha Sound Georgia. Hanna is moving toward the northwest near 12 mph...19 km/hr...and this motion is expected to continue during the next day or so with a gradual increase in forward speed. A turn to the north is expected by late Friday. On the forecast track...the center of Hanna will pass just east of the central and northwestern Bahamas today...and will be near the southeast coast of the United States by late Friday. However...rains and winds associated with Hanna will reach the coast well in advance of the center. Thursday, September 4, 2008 11:00 AM EDT - We don't like Ike Look at Ike! A little blob with an eye! It was upgraded to a <http://stormcarib.com/guide.htm#saffir> Category 4 hurricane yesterday with sustained winds of near 140mph! It is expected to travel a bit north-west and then make a dive towards the south aiming as it looks right now for the <http://stormcarib.com/reports/current/tci.shtml> Turks and Caicos and <http://stormcarib.com/reports/current/bahamas.shtml> the Bahamas. Yes, the same group of islands we have talked about all week regarding Hanna! There are a couple big differences, Hanna didn't move, Ike will move through quickly, Hanna was 'just' a tropical storm/minimal hurricane, Ike will be 'the big one'! Also, Hanna affected a large area with its outflow, causing widespread flooding, Ike is smaller in size and will affect a smaller area. In any case, Ike is going to be very dangerous. Ike is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph...26 km/hr. A gradual turn toward the west and west-southwest is expected over the next 48 hours. On this track the hurricane will continue to move over the open waters of the west-central Atlantic during the next couple of days. It is too early to determine what land areas might eventually be affected by Ike but interests in the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands should monitor the progress of this system. Maximum sustained winds are near 140 mph...220 km/hr...with higher gusts. Ike is an extremely dangerous category four hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. Some weakening is forecast during the next day or so but Ike is expected to remain a powerful hurricane for the next several days. Thursday, September 4, 2008 11:00 AM EDT - Forget about Josephine...Let's get through Hanna and Ike first... ...Josephine weakens a little... at 1100 am AST...1500z...the center of Tropical Storm Josephine was located near latitude 14.5 north...longitude 32.2 west or about 520 miles...840 km...west of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands. Josephine is moving toward the west-northwest near 10 mph...17 km/hr ...And this motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph...85 km/hr...with higher gusts. Upper-level winds are currently not favorable for significant strengthening...and little change in strength is forecast during the next couple of days.
