Don't know where you reside, Liz, but that storm certainly effected a lot of the country. We live on the shore of Lake Erie in Ohio and the winds on Sunday were incredible. We were without power from Sunday night till yesterday about noon. It was really difficult, but we managed. There are just the two of us, so we did what we could. We even went to a movie to pass the "dark time" one evening. Hot tea! Sewing machine, Internet, and back to civilization. I just can't conceive of what those people in Texas are going through and many other places, like Louisiana, which has recuperated from Katrina. Our thoughts go out to them. I saw some pictures today that actually brought tears to my eyes. There are still thousands of people in our area without power and may not have it till the weekend, if then.. We were a pocket contain two private homes and a church, so it took longer to get to us than to businesses, which I totally understand. One of our banks was even closed for some time...... Thanks for helping to really put things in prospective. Hi Everyone I have possibly found (I hope!) my great great grandfather's birth record, but need to tap into others' expertise to determine whether I'm on the right track. The record is for Menyhardt Toth, b. 15 July 1848 in Kecskemet. The father is unnamed, the mother's name is Rosalia Toth. Q1 - As the father's unnamed would it be reasonable to assume that the mother was unmarried at the time of the child's birth? Or could there be another reason? Q2 - There appears to be some sort of comment added to the record that I don't understand. Would someone be able to take a look at it to see if they can translate it? I think the first word means 'midwife' and after that all I can work out is a name. As always, any help is most appreciated. Your old newspapers and just regular obits have been valuable in the areas I am researching. It may not be a surname I am working with, but it will give either cemetery or funeral home information for contacts. Sadly funeral homes that were bought out after the early 1900s didn't often protect or have access to earlier records. Sometimes cemeteries used grave-digging permits for another research source; but an expert on Pennsylvania required documents said this wasn't a state requirement. Does anyone know, were there grave-digger unions back then? I forgot to ask the expert this question. Marika **************Psssst...Have you heard the news?
