The Devil exists in the world; he designs automated answering systems for essential services. FEMA under (Clinton's) Jamie Lee Whitten was considered the finest of govt agencies - when the Bushies came in, anything Clinton was discarded. No evaluation of whether it was a good idea or not. I still haven't heard back from my insurance carrier, nor, more importantly, has my Homeowner's Association shown up with tarps for the roof. Excellent that you and yours are healthy and whole. Hope you get power back soon. til then, happy bbq. Liz -- [email protected] wrote: Liz, like I said still no power here in Kingwood (northeast suburb of Houston). They are telling people to call 1800621FEMA and if you are lucky enough to get a cell phone connection they put you in a loop of question like for english press 1 and so on, then they tell you that you can log on www.fema.gov for quicker service and then you get the message that please call back later because all associates are busy and you will now be disconnected. The people living in Chicagoland and northwest Indiana got dumped on by Lowell's leftovers and THEN the remnants of IKE came charging in the next day. Dear Liz, Laszlo and Peggy, Thank you for sharing your stories. First hand information is so valuable in recording history, and you all have written so poignantly. So sorry you had to endure such difficult times. Hurricane Ike visited us one evening earlier in the week. We lost a branch off our favorite large oak tree, but north of us in Beaver Falls PA there was much damage, 85 mile an hour winds. I read where Ike extended into Iceland creating gales. Les, glad you will get some reprieve by visiting Buffalo. Last night as we sat outside on what was our first very cool evening, we watched a young deer eating the apples we had thrown over the fence for their benefit. Nature takes and it gives back in predictable ways. Marika **************Looking for simple solutions to your real-life financial challenges? I'm in Houston. With no TV, radio, Internet, I was unaware of the reach of the damage in Galveston until I picked up a newspaper yesterday. Ik caused more damage north of us? Glad you are all right. In Ohio? Right after the storm, a huge cool front moved in, and we got , I think 3 inches of rain in 2 hours. A real gullywasher. (And, more leaking) And it's been incredibly cool here, down to record lows in the 50, daytime highs in the 70's. THAT just doesn't happen. We live on the shore of Lake Erie in Ohio and the winds on Sunday were incredible. We were without power from Sunday night till yesterday about noon. It was really difficult, but we managed. There are just the two of us, so we did what we could. We even went to a movie to pass the "dark time" one evening. Hot tea! Sewing machine, Internet, and back to civilization. I just can't conceive of what those people in Texas are going through and many other places, like Louisiana, which has recuperated from Katrina. Our thoughts go out to them. I saw some pictures today that actually brought tears to my eyes. There are still thousands of people in our area without power and may not have it till the weekend, if then.. We were a pocket contain two private homes and a church, so it took longer to get to us than to businesses, which I totally understand. One of our banks was even closed for some time...... Thanks for helping to really put things in prospective. Well, I'm reading this on Thurs night, and I take back the "all this falderall" comment. I don't know what category Ike was when he come thru on Sat am, or what the wind speed was. But the storm damage was the worst ever, and I've been thru Alicia, Allison, and 30 years worth on passing storms. The wind was terrible! And my roof leaked, soaking the carpet in my bedroom. I was busier than a one-arm paperhanger, what with a new leak springing up every 10 minutes. However, the roof stayed on, the leak was confined to the bedroom, and I'm alive. Laszlo, everything and everyone getting back to normal! Best of Luck! Liz -- "Carolyn" <[email protected]> wrote: Our thoughts and prayers are with you, hope normal services will be restored asap. Power came on about 3 this afternoon. Hot coffee! Dishwasher, clothes washer & dryer, TV, internet, back to living in the 21st century. BUT, I got to meet my neighbors, trade favors, learn the kids names, share bbq from the grill, cooked in the twilight. The roof on my condo leaks, the back door won't close..... I feel lucky compared to the people with houses gone. The weather here has been strange also. Yes, we are as far north in OH as you can get. Lake Erie is right across the street from my home and it was really quite scary to see how it was during the winds on Sunday. We hardly had any rain, just winds, ( up to 73 MPH in Cleveland and 71 MPH in our area). Sadly there was a young boy, around 12, here in our town, who was hit and fatally injured by a falling limb while trying to get home when the winds really picked up. There are also two people in critical condition from falling limbs. The weatherman said they had been stressing that Wind Warnings mean STAY AT HOME and IN THE HOUSE. There are many, many homes with trees which have toppled on them. It will take a long time for this area to get up and running again. The weather since then has been quite lovely, a little on the cool side and it's to be in the low to mid 70s for the next week with no rain, but exceptionally chilly nights. Down to 40 tonight.... Guess we need to thank "someone up there" for keeping an eye on us........We had it pretty easy compared to others. We lost everything in our refrigerator and freezer, but that is nothing compared to people who have lost not only lives but everything they owned. Thanks for the comments, Liz.
