Dear Elaine! In the period 1526-1918 Hungary was under Habsburg reign. Habsburgs are also ruled Austria, Bohemia and the throne of the Holy Roman Empire. During the Napoleon wars Francis I. was King of Hungary and Bohemia and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (until 1806, when the Empire was dissolved by Napoleon), and the Francis was the first Emperor of Austria. So in that wars against Napoleon the Hungarian Parlaiment (called Diet) was voted help for his king, Francis I. From the 1790's many Hungarians drafted into the armies. (Example one of my ancestor was in the war from 1804-1815) Later Napoleon reached Vienna and then attacked Hungary. In the next year will be the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Györ, where Napoleon won over the hungarian armies. Later this afternoon I will have information about the people you are interested in. One of the persons I found was a John Remak, born in 1852, immigrated 1891, was single and lived in the city where I was born, Perth Amboy, N. J. which is very close to Woodbridge and my town of Metuchen. This was from the 1900 Census. There was a George Hudak on it also, age 45 and that happens to be my maiden name. It is no relation. There are some forms that I can email from Ancestry.com if you like. Wikipedia has some information about Anton, presumably the same Archduke referred to in the entry that was posted. There isn't a whole lot of information but judging by the dates, it may be the same person. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archduke_Anton_Victor_of_Austria Best, William. > From: Grayce Ezarik <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [HUNGARY] 1797: Hungarian soldiers dying in > Italy > To: [email protected] > Message-ID: > <[email protected]> > Content-Type: > text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed > > You are noble indeed for posting this. I was researching the OTHER side of my family the other day. They are from, well, now it's in northern Italy, but it used to be a part of Austria. I was looking at the death records from around 1800 for Arco, in Trento, Italy. It is at the northern end of Lake Garda, at the southern edge of the Alps. I was surprised to find about 5 or so deaths of Hungarian soldiers around that time there in the south Tyrol. Also 1 soldier from Moravia and one from I believe it said Bosnia. Googling around and checking Wikipedia, I see that Napoleon was invading Italy and Austria around that time. The handwriting from that time is very hard to read. I selected one of the more legible entries for a Hungarian soldier and I will post it here. Unfortunately, there was no information as far as where he was born or where he lived. I have no idea how researchers today would find these death records of their soldier ancestors so far from home: "1797, Nov. 9: Adamo Pruchma, ungarese, e soldato del Regimento Arciduca Antonio ... fu sepolto nel Cimitero dell' insigne Collegiata d'Arco". He was 22 years old, and no cause of death was listed. I skipped (with ...) the section where it lists all the sacraments he received. Running this thru freetranslation.com , I think this translates to something like: "Nov 9, 1797: Adam Pruchma, Hungarian, and soldier of the Regiment of Archduke Anton ... was buried in the Cemetery of the famous Collegiata of Arco." The Collegiata is, I think, the largest church in the area. Does someone have a better understanding of the history of those times than I do? Did Hungary provide troups to help protect the Austrian lands? And they were sent all the way to to the south Tyrol? (Can I possibly be part Hungarian on my Italian side?) - Elaine

This is very possible speculation, keeping an open mind. I have several old maps..... one is 1680-1918. I have a map that shows county of Belovár-Kórös. Good idea to continue to search older maps, even at the good old Library. When you see this confusing mix of "from Hungary", but "Russian" surnames or place names, also throwing in Czechoslovakia (or Czech or Slovak), look into Carpatho-Rusyn ethnicity, and see if that fits. Rusyns are East Slavs, as are Russians and Ukrainians, who lived in historical Hungary and nearby areas. I suspect Balovaretz might actually be spelled starting with Belo- , Belo means "white" in Russian and other Slavic languages. Altho just Googling I'm not finding any hits. I suggest looking at a map, starting maybe in NE Slovakia and moving outward from there, for a village that may sound like Balovaretz. It may even be 2 words, Belo Varets, something like that. Also, some village names have changed. Does anyone have a link to that wonderful 1910 map of Hungary? That might be a good place to look for a name like Balovaretz. Actually, the -etz or -ets ending sounds like a Russian ending to me, and not a Rusyn ending, but I don't know if there is any overlap. I also don't know what it means. And I would guess Djerdj would be a Slavic "George"? All this is speculation on my part. - Elaine E. > Date: Sun, 12 Oct 2008 14:21:01 -0400 > From: Grayce Ezarik <[email protected]> > Subject: Re: [HUNGARY] Balovaretz > To: [email protected] > > MLP, > > You are absolutely right. MLP, You are absolutely right. His race was Russian and his birthplace (1910) Hungary. BTW, his uncle or Father was born (1886) in Czech as were his parents, w/Slovak ethnicity, with the etz ending in his name. The family recalls being at their (Uncle) farm in Ohio, so it is not a mythical person. Of course any scenario is a possibility, as an adoptee etc. Uncle's Naturalization index ( #253, 39210 PET 1-30-29, 11 5 1886 BD ), with distinct, clear and perfect spelling, listed this as description of record: D-250 Duchene, Frank Nil-D-263 Djerdj, Djokic The last two words sound like a port or harbor, but according to Google, it is a man/woman's name. Same applies to Duchene, Frank. Hey, The name is Duchene is similar to the Russian male, whose surname is Dochenetz. I just now realized that, so the mailing list is very helpful. I will check other nat index cards and see if there is a relationship to the wording. I did some searches of villages on Wikipedia, but not to be found in Hungary. Any hints appreciated. Grayce in PA Hi Grayce, A Google search didn't find the Balovaretz spelling; however, searching a suffix for etz brought up this: According to JewishGen's ShtetlSeeker, Dworetz was situated 16.3 miles north of Berdichev, and 8.2 miles south of Zhitomer. Thus, the name Dwor may have resulted by dropping the suffix "-etz." Berdichev was near Kiev - 100 miles southwest. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, also a web site re Yiddish asked the question, but no one answered: Subject: etymology of "etz" and "enk" "Does anyone know where the use of "etz" and "enk" for ihr and eich comes from?" ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, It's a good guess your query person is Russian. It's almost certain, Grayce, that place name was mis-spelled, for whatever reason. I would tend to concentrate on Bélavézse, county Sáros, district Bártfa, which was populated by Ukrainians in 1910, and had names like Belovezsa, Beloweza, and today is named Beloveza in Slovakia. You can use http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellisgold.html to just crank in the town's name in different spellings to see what you get. There is no "Balovaretz" in the "Hungarian Village Finder" CD, nor in Expedia, nor in Google. ...Steve in IN Grayce Ezarik wrote: > Hi list, I am back after a few years....I wonder if anyone has a clue > where I could find where male born in Balovaretz, Hungary, he > speaks English and is Russian (race) as listed on manifest put out by > the U.
