It does become an obsession especially when you see all the areas the Huling lines have ended up in. There are very few states where someone from the Margaret/Marcus Huling(s) line didn't settle in. I need to catch up on this thread. I agree with Beth, the Marquis de Hulingues theory was long ago disproven. I've seen Dr Craig's manuscript as they have it in the DAR library in DC. Diane Zimmermann's book is also great and in the DAR library as well. The HULINGs of NJ-PA and the HULINGs of RI are two distinct separate family trees. I will try to answer the many questions others are asking very soon. Best regards, Paul Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. His email bounced last time I tried to contact him. His Huling line also comes from Margaret/Marcus Huling through their son John. John sold the family land in Amity after brother Andrew moved to VA and John took his family to New Jersey where he lived he rest of his life. His son William moved to Ohio and this is the line that Carl has worked on. Beth S. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. There evidently was no such French nobleman. The story started when some members of the Huling family were trying to improve their social status and a genealogist helped devleop the story. Dr. Peter S. Craig had written about the falsehood. You might want to see Dianne Zimmerman's book which is on the PA Hulings line. She does have the false story in it as she died in a car accident before being able to finish her second edition of the book. Author: catheis Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.huling/170.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Marcus Huling, the innkeeper did have a number of children. His father, Marcus and wife Margaret are the couple from whom most of us descend. The Inn is in a park in Douglasville. There is a county fair every Sept and the Inn is opened for lunch. Also there is Mounce Jones's house. He was the father in law of this Marcus and the first white man to settle in the area. The clockmaker - I don't know. I don't have anyone listed as a clock maker. Maybe Laurence Hulings line in New Jersey had a clock maker. Beth S. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: HaganWatsonFamilies Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.huling/170.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: As a relative of a few Marcus Hulings, I'd be very interested to know which one was a clockmaker. So far I know of an innkeeper in what is now Douglassville, PA (Berks County). This is the Berks County Historical Society Website. www.historicpreservationtrust.org Maybe they would know more. I don't think he had any children, but maybe this was a nephew. Maybe the clock was made for Marcus Huling instead of by him. Another possibly helpful resource would be "Huling Genealogy-Descendants of James and Margaret Huling of Newport, RI and Lewes, DE" by Esther Littlefield Woodworth-Barnes is available from the The Rhode Island Genealogical Society. Most Hulings in PA and NJ seem to descend from these two. Good luck and let me know if you find out anything. Chris Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have looked at all my Huling databases (4) and have no A.J or J.A. Huling that I could match to Harris County. Here is what do I have on Andrew of Harris: Andrew Hulen/Hulin 1850 Census born in Ala as is older brother John, he is two years old and living in Harris Co with parents Samuel and Elizabeth (nee Clark). Andrew Huling 1860 Harris County, post office Whiteside. 13 years old born about 1847 in Georgia living with parents. Andrew Huling 1870 22 years old farm laborer born Georgia. Still with parents Then nothing more as Andrew Huling A.J. Huling Census of 1880 Beat 3, Scott Miss. Spouse G.A. He is farmer born in 1855 and both parents were born in GA. Nothing more on a A.J. and I have never attached him to Sam as a parent. Not enough evidence to show that A.J. was from Harris County. Plus this says he was born about 1855 and that is not too close to 1848. I searched Google books but wasn't successful. However, I did find that the Louise C. Barfield History of Harris County, 1827-1961, is found in a number of libraries including the Family History Library in Salt Lake so I went to their catalog thinking it might be on microfilm. It isn't and neither are the marriage or will books of Harris. But the Ft Wayne library does have this book.that is the Allen Co. Library in Ft. Wayne , In. I know that for a small fee they will copy pages and mail them to you. The book is also in the Midcontinent Public Library and I understand they will also copy and mail. They are located in Independence MO. I couldn't find the will book of Harris Co in any of the libraries. Family History Library also has Harris Co GA Marriage 1827-1860 by Frances T. Ingmire, published in 1985. It is also in the Allen Co library There is another marriage book that might be more helpful: Marriages of Harris County, Georgia 1827-1868 by Marilee b. Hageness, 1994. And there is a Georgia Newspaper Clippings Harris Co. Extracts 1828-1888 by Tad Evans 2005. I think it is found in the Midcontinent library These books were found in a number of other libraries mainly in the south.not in Harris County however. I have a cousin here for the NASCAR race and if I can get hold of him I will ask him to look at the Seattle library as a couple were listed as being in their collection. I should be going to Salt Lake in May and if that doesn't work out, in late July I will be at BYU for a family history course. The Harold B. Library is listed as having a copy of Barfield's book. I will look for it. I did try their catalog to see if it is one that has been filmed and put on line but no luck. Oh, I check each book on Google to see if any library in PA had one, nothing came up for PA. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have a million other questions as I'm trying to figure out whether or not he is my great grandmother's (Comelia Huling 1884 - 1962) father. Do you happen to know if Andrew born in 1848 traveled to Mississippi in the 70's or 80's and then returned to GA? Do you know his wife's name? I am hittng so many brick walls. Apparently there is some info about the Hulings on P.99 in History of Harris County, GA book, but I can't find it here in PA or order it online anywhere. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I am trying to create a family tree for my father's 70th birtday who knew very little of his dad's family or life growing up. I have discovered a lot of information from his dad's side (Watson), but am struggling a lot with his mother's side (Huling). Thank you!
