Art Huling's wife or Cyrus Huling' sister-in-law I believe.. Which led to the marriage of my father to a Woodbury,,.My aunt's younger sister Lois,,I had always thought my father had met my mother in the Lake George/Albany area but now it seems everything took place in Columbus. This is fascinating.I guess that would make him my great great grandfather??Going one step further,I have roots with 'Hackett' mayor of Albany at one point before his untimely death..It really does strikes me as an amazing coincidence how close the two sides of my family were in different locations around the country Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: BenlGrimes111 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.huling/181/mb.ashx Message Board Post: James Boyd Hulin James Boyd Hullin was born December 18, 1805 in New York City, NY. His mother and Father were probably Henry and Elizabeth Hullin, born about 1770. (Birth Locations unknown). We know he had a sister named Mary M Hullin who lived in New York her entire life and was unmarried. She died April 24, 1882 and was buried with her mother in the Graveyard of Trinty Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. James came to Louisiana before 1830. Prior to that time he married Jane Joanna Spencer, She was the Daughter of Thomas Spencer(B-August 24, 1772 (Location Unknown) And Died August 19, 1836 in Jefferson Parish, LA. Jane was born July 31,1807 in New York, New York and died October 10, 1846 in New Orleans, LA. Jane Spencer's marriage to James Hullin was June 28, 1828 apparently in New Orleans, LA. We believe he was involved in the start-up if the Mechanics & Traders Bank which was the first bank in New Orleans. By 1840 he is the Cashier for the original Bank of New Orleans. Several law suits list him JB Hull(e)n. He was a member of the court of arbitration for New Orleans. He and Jane Spencer had 8 children, Ernestine, Althea, Maurice, Palmyre, Ada, Corrine, Jane, and Emma. Emma was born In New York after James' death. Emma was reared by several Aunts in New Orleans. Great Grand daughter Emma Keen had an understanding that James Boyd Hullin had been appointed ambassador to Italy by President Polk but died before leaving to go to Europe. We are unable to confirm this appointment. He died in New York City on November 8, 1845. The Hullin name likely came from the Netherlands as Huling. The Dutch reformed church St Marks in the bowery where he is buried (vault 84) sugguest his family was part of Peter Styversant's colony in NY. We have been unable to determine if this is true. 2. Ann E. Ignacio
    3. Another TAFT/HULING question: If SallyTAFTmarried George HULING and had Mary Ann HULING.... If Sally TAFT later married a Daniel HULINLG and had Cordelia HULING.... What RECORD exists for either or both of these marriages?? What RECORD exists for either or both of her daughters’ births? Hope someone can help me get to the bottom of these relationships or at least have some clue for me to pursue. Thanks in advance! Ann in Iowa

    1. [HULING] Sally TAFT HULING to Concord, Mich...
    2. Ann E. Ignacio
    3. Hi, I’m new to this list and am getting back to researching my ancestor Mary Ann HULING. The “Huling Genealogy” book has her tentatively in the family of David HULING and Mary LANE. Somehow this just didn’t seem certain enough. Some time ago, I had heard about Sally Taft/Tefft and looked into and later dropped that search, but recently I have gotten more interested, especially since I started noticing that a number of Public trees stated that Sally had married George HULING and later a Daniel HULING and that she had gone with her daughter Mary Ann and Mary Ann’s husband to Concord, Jackson Co., Michigan. That is exactly where my Mary Ann HULING went with her husband Jesse MATTESON. What puzzled me was that the David HULING family had lived for a long time in Dutchess Co., NY, but my Mary Ann HULING and Jesse MATTESON were married in Shaftsbury, Vermont... Sally TAFT HULING’s daughter Mary Ann was born and lived in Shaftsbury, as well as Jesse MATTESON’s family. MY QUESTION IS: What is the SOURCE/ORIGIN of the statement that Sally moved to CONCORD, JACKSON CO., MICHIGAN with her daughter Mary Ann and her husband? I have further questions if anyone can help me with this one. Thanks! Ann in Iowa

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: aeignacio Surnames: HULING, MATTESON, SCRANTON Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.huling/32.46.52.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The year the book was published I ordered it from Esther. My brother had submitted our great-great grandmother's Mary Ann HULING's name and descendancy as we knew it from Jesse and Mary Ann Huling MATTESON's Bible (in my possession), down to our generation. Esther inserted Mary Ann Huling into the David HULING/Mary Lane family as they presumably had a Mary of about the right age but not further identified, in their family. I accepted it as being possible but knew nothing more about Mary Ann, whose family (of David and Mary) had lived for a long time in Dutchess County, NY. Mary Ann married Jesse MATTESON of Shaftsbury, in Shaftsbury, Vt. which sort of puzzled me if she was from Dutchess Co., New York. Recently I took another look at Sally TAFT and George HULING who supposedly also had a daughter Mary Ann of the right age, in Shaftsbury. Not much info on them, but looking further, I found that George was sort of a travelling/itinerant? inventor and had died possibly in Illinois. One researcher had added that Sally had accompanied her daughter Mary Ann and her husband to Concord, Jackson Co., Michigan in the 1840s. My Mary Ann HULING and her husband Jesse MATTESON HAD moved from Shaftsbury to Concord, Jackson Co., Michigan. Sally, supposedly had secondly married a Daniel HULING and had another daughter Cordelia HULING who married a Truman MATTESON (most likely a relative, but so far not researched) and lived in Shaftsbury. In the 1850 Federal Census I find a Truman and Cordelia MATTESON living next door to a Stafford SCRANTON in Concord. This George Stafford SCRANTON was the son of Elnathan SCRANTON by his first wife. By his third wife, Elnathan, had a son Albert H. SCRANTON, born in Concord. So Stafford (he used his middle name) and Albert SCRANTON were half-brothers. Mary Ann HULING was the half-sister of Cordelia Huling MATTESON. Mary Ann HULING and Jesse MATTESON had a daughter Sarah Josephine MATTESON born in Concord. Albert probably visited his half-brother Stafford who lived next door to Sarah Josephine's aunt Cordelia....and Stafford's half-brother Albert H. SCRANTON married Cordelia's sister Mary Ann HULING MATTESON's daughter Sarah Josephine MATTESON in 1867. Moreover,Mary Ann and Jesse's first two daughters had been named Sarah (after Mary Ann's mother Sally?) and Delia Augusta (after Mary Ann's half sister Cordelia?). Does this not sound like a logical connection to you? I am not on a Huling List as yet. Ann in Iowa Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [HULING] James Huling 1753-1837
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: catheis Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.huling/179/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I would like to know what people think of the following information about James Huling(s). Marcus and Rebecca Godfrey Hulings had five children; all with the exception of one have been well researched. The lone exception in my opinion is second to youngest son James. Most items on James say he was born about 1753 in what is now Perry County, and died about 1838 in LA. No references to his death have been found. But where was he all those other years? Even his birth is a mystery, many people put down Duncan Island but Marcus didn't buy this until about 1770. However, the family was living in the area (Northumberland) after 1750. Also I find that many people use the Douglasville Baptism as date//place of birth. The question comes up because Engle in Notes and Queries on p400 says that James use to tell people he was the first white child born west of the Alleghenies. From county history books we learn that the "Indians ran Marcus out of Northumberland by 1756 and he removed to Ft. Pitt. So if James was born west it would have been 1756 or after. This latter info was from Engle's First and Second Series. The family stayed at Ft Pitt during the storming of the Fort and return to Northumberland about 1763/64. James served in Revolution in same unit as his brother Marcus. after the War does he go with brothers Marcus and Samuel to the Pittsburgh area and then from there to Tennessee? In the first Engle, Notes and Queries, p. 400, he says James went to near Nashville and became a successful merchant. I can't find anything to confirm he was a merchant. Engle also says that he was married but no issue. And finally, states he dies at age 85 in MS. The latter makes more sense to me than his being in LA. I find no records for him in LA at any time. This Engle source is found on Google books for those who wish to see it. Ancestry had tax records for James in TN from late 1790s and early 1800's. By the 1790's, James is living in Montgomery County, TN and is found in the Goodspeeds History of Stewart County. In 1805 he is serving as a JP in Montgomery County. He is mentioned several times in various court documents. He lived near Six Mile Tree and the Edwin Gibson Plantation as it mentions he had cleared this area out. In 1806 he resigned as JP. No reason was given for his resignation. In 1816 he was listed in the paper as delinquent in taxes and in 1818 the property was listed for sale at auction if the tax wasn't paid. In 1819 in the Meriwether Papers, Southern Historical Collection there is a bond to Meriwether. This seems to be in Adairsville KY where his cousin Marcus has been involved in early oil exploration. Just what James was doing here isn't explained. This Marcus is Frederick W. Huling's brother. His nephew Frederick W. Huling came to TN to learn to be an attorney. Fred is son of James's younger brother Thomas who dies about 1808 and James and his unknown wife (Engle is source) may have lived with Fred and his wife, family. On Ancestry there are a number of tax and land records for James from Montgomery County. Census records for 1830 in Mont. County for James show one white male and one white female both age 60-69; in 1840, listing for Fred Hulings in Marshall County MS, finds one white male age 70-79. I do not find James listed in any other census. 1837 of Washington Co MS gave POA to "my unkle, James to receive money from those who had purchased land from Fred (or his agent) in NW corner of Madison Co, TN. By 1838 Fred is living in Marshall County, MS with his four children and wife. James may be living with him. Engle (found on Google Books) says he died at age of 85 in MS. No mention of LA. But Fred's remaining son James has gone to LA and married has plantation so this may be where the info came from. Fred and his wife move to LA, son James dies before 1860 and Fred is guardian to the three daughters of James. I would love feedback on this. My first curiosity lies in..are you a descendant from Spink, Huling, or other? Secondly, and more directly, I wholly concur with your post. How I came upon this post was because, this evening I realized that I have little to almost nothing for 2 or 3 offspring of Robert. One of the others is John Spink(~1662)...but that is another lineage. Getting back to Elizabeth for a moment. I do not know how I missed the fact that I did not even have a husband for her. And, I have been working on many other parts of this descendancy for the better part of 14 years. Whew! Before I even read your post, I had seen other links in forums and Google that make this connection. I disturbs me when various folks see the connection, copy it into their tree (without verification), then someone else does the same, etc.. One day, someone comes along and says, "all these folks can't be wrong". My, my,...yes? So it is somewhat a pleasure to see the converse. Example: exactly what you posted AND the manner of your deducing. Though I have seen some pretty interesting differences in ages at marriage over the years, I must say having children as proposed by some sources? and that many children at that??.NOT. Bottom line here Ann, if I may please. Your post is exactly 3 years old to the day. At least at the time of this post. I was wondering if you had discovered any info to further discredit the connection in question, but also, would you be interested in comparing notes. One final thought had just crossed my mind. I do believe that I have come across an Elizabeth Spink marrying a Huling, but it won't fully surface to remember exactly whom. I thank you for reading this Lady Ann and please feel free to contact me off-site at Redfeennix@yahoo.com In the interim, have a great day.
