According to his obituary in 1932, he was from the Mastricht area of Holland - and looking around at the names, it looks like his family was of Huguenot origins - according to various sources he was from Houthem (which I can find) and Foquemont (which I cannot!) Apparently he spoke German, French and Spanish in addition to Dutch and English, which would indicate a well-educated man, and his rapid acquisition of land, probably a well-resourced family.
