Hello, all -- First, very very belated New Year's greetings to everyone. And I'm glad to see that others on the list are more awake and aware than I am these days. My thanks to all of you who have made -- and continue to make -- ongoing contributions to HWE by posting to the list. It is you, our subscribers, who make HWE the interesting, helpful and informative place that it is. Second, the following post is one which I am forwarding from the HWE Board. It concerns the JUNK surname, as you can see from the subject line. And one of the subjects it touches upon is that of Huguenots in Scotland. This has come up before on the list but continues to be a subject of some mystery, ie. there seems very little, if any, info about Huguenots in Scotland. Or is there? Anyone know? Anyway, if you want to reply to the following Board post, please do so *on the Board* because the person who posted the message is not a list subscriber. So she will only see your reply if you do so on the Board. And, as you know if you've been around here for a while, instructions for getting to the Board are at the very end of this message. Riley) Date Posted on HWE Board: February 1, 2004 Message Board Post as follows: My maiden surname was JUNK...and for eons I was told we were Scots-Irish, and thought it was a tall tale... JUNK is a German name, I logically surmised, spelled the same yet pronounced "Younk". Then, I found my immigrant ancestor to the United States and he indeed was born in Northern Ireland in 1790. In a search for Immigrant Ships to the US., I found a JUNK being deported from Scotland 1685 and he was a Covenanteer. What would drive a family out of Germany to Scotland and then to Ireland and to the US? Then, I discovered GenNet and a multitude of French JUNKs....the only answer can be that in the reign of Louis 14th or before, they were living in France, not Germany and emmigrated to Scotland to excape the carnial sins of the Catholic Church....Huguenots. I ran a search of this site and no one has mentioned the Surname of JUNK in connection with the Huguenots. I don't have time now to pursue the France to Scotland/Ireland connection, but will do so. Incindentally, there are still JUNKs in Northern Ireland, Scotland, and France to this day. Can anyone tell me if there is a history of the Huguenots that settled in Scotland? ============================================== To reply to the above Board message, please go to the HWE Board by clicking on this URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Fq.2ADEAE/221 and then click on Post Reply.
