John DELAUNE is named in 'A List of Strangers', published in a series of articles by 'The Genealogical Magazine' at the end of the 19th century. The material was extracted from the Lansdowne MSS in the British Museum by the Rev. A.W. Cornelius Hallen and refers to the foreigners living in London in the years 1567 & 1568. The particular entry refers to 'Eterne Devill, servt. with John Delaune' and shows that they were living in the 'Bridge Without' Ward and that Eterne had been there 'XXV yeres'. Also, in the same ward may be found 'John Delaunce hatmaker'. The known casual spelling habits of Tudor England, particularly in relation to foreign names, suggests that the two individuals may be the one and the same. The hatmaker is listed as having lived in London for 'XXV yeres'. One may surmise that perhaps John came to London accompanied by his faithful retainer... Best wishes, Mike.
