    1. [HWE] Threaded Archives: sixth update

    3. Fellow listers, Finally, here is another update about the situation in our threaded archives. My apologies for waiting so long with this -- I have had a really frustrating time trying to get some answers about it from Rootsweb. As many of you know, there have been on-going problems with Rootsweb *threaded* archives beginning in mid-March. (The Interactive or Searchable archives has always been OK, or so Rootsweb has said.) I have posted quite a few messages to you about this problem in an effort to keep you informed -- dated 23 March, 8 April, 4 May, 6 June and 13 June. You can find them in the Interactive archives, using key words: threaded archives. This problem happened because Rootsweb ran out of disk space. The installation of more disk space (beginning in March) would rectify the problem, according to Rootsweb. However, it hasn't. I have been sending inquiries, for over a month now, to Rootsweb staff who are responsible for the archives. I've gotten no responses, let alone answers. As a result, I've become quite irritated with the whole thing. Here's the extent of the problem. If you go to the threaded archives for our list, you will see that the April archives has only 20% of messages that were actually posted that month (54 messages, dated April 1-6, out of a total of 270). The situation for May is worse, with only 8% of messages there (only 9 out of a total of about 110 messages, dated 25 to 28 May). The June threaded archives seemed to be fine up until the 18th -- after that, no further messages got into the archives for that month. The archives for July looks fine *so far*. My questions to Rootsweb have been simple, in my opinion -- Where are the missing messages? Will they eventually appear where they should be in the archives? If so, when? If not, should I have listers re-post them? All I've gotten is silence. Which mystifies me, because ours is not the only list affected. I think many, if not most, are. Finally, in sheer frustration, I contacted the Rootsweb HelpDesk and, for the first time, someone actually replied, and promptly too -- but much of the info given was not new. Here is what I was told. "The problem is that it has gotten too big for the server. It has to be broken up and put on new ones. However, with the merger, everyone has been busy. No excuse for no answer though and (we) do apologize for that. This notice is on the threaded archives: Important System Notices: The Search Engine we are using has hit an architectural limit and can no longer index the entire site. Work is under way to break up the search engine into per-list databases.......do not have a time estimate but can assure you they are aware of the problem and they have assured us no data will be lost. They are still storing the posts, they just can't display them. (We) apologize for the inconvenience and the confusion." So, it appears Rootsweb is working on the problem, but one can only guess at how long it will take to rectify it (it's been over four months now). And, in spite of the assurances that messages will *not* be lost and will eventually turn up in the threaded archives, I have continued to save all list posts (since March) "just in case". So, if you do go to the threaded archives which is at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/Huguenots-Walloons-Europe/ , be aware that some messages are missing in April, May and June. All other months are OK. Otherwise, please use the keyword search method at the Searchable or Interactive archives at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl . I will, of course, post other updates if/when I learn anything new. Andrea
