Hi, all -- Here are the surname extracts from the BT's of Canterbury St. George. This parish was searched 1685/6 to 1812. The records begin c1600 but I chose 1685/6 as the place to start simply because the handwriting got to be what I considered readable at that point! I hope everyone understands that I am not saying that *all* these surnames were *definitely* Huguenot -- some are but all I can say about others is that they *might be*. Also, a lot of them have been mangled by the spelling of the English-speaking person who wrote them so one has to imagine what they might have been in the original French. Some of these surnames we have seen before on this list. For example, VALDER, WALRAVEN, and CRICKETT were all mentioned in connection with the Walloon settlement at Sandwich. Others have been mentioned in previous posts and can be found in the archives (although this is sometimes a tricky business with all the spelling variants). Re: surnames SPAIN and DESPAIGNE -- it is interesting how some families apparently anglicized to SPAIN and others did not. I also found surnames FEDARB, OLIVE, POUT, FREMOULT AND TEVELIN here -- they are the ones that particularly interest me and I will post details about them at another time. And I caution anyone interested in this parish or any of these names to check the original records themselves to verify. Enjoy!
