Marriages could be by banns -- in which case, banns were read in the church on three consecutive Sundays and, if there were no objections raised, the marriage took place. Some marriages were by licence, though -- in this case, banns were bypassed, for a fee. Reasons for this varied. If you find a marriage by licence which interests you, please check the Canterbury Marriage Licence Records. These sometimes -- but not always -- give additional information such as ages of bride and groom, names of their fathers, groom's occupation. I know these Records are at the Cathedral Archives in Canterbury but, if you don't happen to be passing by that way, they have have been filmed by LDS.
