Hi, fellow listers -- A bulletin for your information. Due to upgrading which is being done on some mailing lists, Rootsweb has informed me that there will be a slow-down in any postings sent to *some lists* -- and H-W-E is one of them -- starting Friday, 8 December 2000 at 7:00 A.M. Pacific Standard Time (GMT -08:00). The entire upgrade is expected to take 10 hours (ie. lasting until 5:00 P.M. PST). During that time, Rootsweb has stated that they "will not process mail for most of that time." What does this mean for you as a subscriber? Does it mean that you will still be able to post to the list, as usual? Yes, but your messages will not reach the list until *after* the upgrade is completed. So, messages will not be lost but they will be delayed. Therefore, if you send a post to the list, it may be a few hours before you see your copy come back to you as it normally does and for it to appear in the archives. Similarly, for anyone who unsubscribes during that time, the request will not take effect immediately (as it normally does) but it will be saved and then processed by Rootsweb when the upgrade is done. What's the reason for the upgrade? I'm not sure. However, Rootsweb has says that it is "desperately needed". I'm guessing it's to beef up the lists' ability to handle increased demand as more and more people subscribe and send posts to all Rootsweb lists. We've already seen, in the last year, the mess that can happen when list archives reach their capacity. We wouldn't want anything similar to happen to the lists. Andrea
