    1. [HWE] List Website: update

    3. Fellow listers -- First, sorry to bombard you with so many posts in the last few days. Hope you don't feel too overwhelmed. This shouldn't last long. As I mentioned yesterday, I'm happy to report that the H-W-E website is taking shape and I hope to have it fully accessible before the end of November, possibly sooner (all fingers crossed and touch wood <g>). Thus, this long overdue update. I'm sorry this has taken so long. It won't be a fancy site, because I'm a complete novice (ignoramus?) at this sort of thing and haven't found the process an easy one. My son, who is twenty-something and the family "computer techie", was to give me help with it but his life took unexpected turns which didn't involve helping Mum out. That is, he fell in love with a Scottish exchange teacher who was here in Canada temporarily and he has now gone to live in Scotland for an undetermined period. Before he left, he assured me that "It's easy, Mum!" This advice from someone who constructed his own website several years ago, complete with moving graphics such as flying birds and photos of water which actual ripple if you click on a nearby button. Well, Mum hasn't found it at all easy! Sigh....... So, there will be no "bells & whistles" for H-W-E -- eg. no fancy background or graphics or hot buttons -- just a basic site but I hope it will serve its purpose nicely. Some of you may be wondering why we need a web site, as well as this list. Well, Rootsweb recommends that each list have one, actually. And I agree. Some are quite basic and just include information on how to subscribe and unsubscribe. However, my plans for H-W-E website are more detailed. The purpose of the site is two-fold: First, it will have a lot of information on it that subscribers (and non-subscribers too) can refer to for help, suggestions, information, links, etc. A lot of the info has been brought up on the list at one time or another (or is in the "welcome message") but the website will make it accessible all in one place. Second, it will allow others who are not on the list to find us through a web search -- for example, if they type in the words Huguenots or Walloons on a search engine. Once on the website, they can learn more about Hugs/Walls and join the list if they want to. Also, our H-W-E Surnames List will be on the website so those names will also, hopefully, be found through a web search. Listers, I would like input from those of you willing to provide it. I will be posting further, more specific, information about the web site and asking for your feedback. My first step is to post an outline (template) of how the whole website is organized and what general headings are included. As I said, I would value suggestions and opinions on this. It's not just my site -- it belongs to the H-W-E list. This will be my next post, probably later today. Stay tuned for it. Andrea
