Hi to all -- This is in response to the inquiry on 13 January from Judi <jj@jcordingley.fsnet.co.uk> re: surname CABANE(I)S of Walworth, Surrey (London area) c1780. As Judi mentioned in her post, the IGI gives a clue as to possible Huguenot connections. That is, it lists this surname as occuring in the records of two French churches in London -- the Threadneedle St. Church and the Church of the Artillery. These entries would be the extracts from the Huguenot Society of London publications for these church records. I notice that, in my Oct 16 post of surnames extracted from the tésmoignages of Threadeedle Street Church (in list archives), there is listed the surname CABANIS and also the similar-looking CABANEL and CABANNE. Of course, the trick is to find the link between the people mentioned in this record (and the French church records) and the Charlotte mentioned by Judi. I wonder if the date 1780 refers to Charlotte's birth, her death, or some other significant event. Judi, I would suggest a search of the records of Walworth, Surrey since you know your Charlotte had some sort of connection with this location. If you find nothing there, try working gradually outwards, searching in adjacent parishes till you find something (hopefully!) Since you are in the UK, you might have access to original records. If not -- and if you have a Mormon FHC near you -- try a Place Search on the LDS website (www.familysearch.org) to see what Walworth records LDS has filmed. At the same time, have a look at the records of Threadneedle St. and Church of the Artillery to find out specific details about individuals there. LDS has filmed these records and Huguenot Society publications are often available on the shelves of major libraries and archives. The goal is to work backwards in time from Charlotte, linking her to the individuals attending Huguenot churches in an earlier time period. It might also be worth joining a London area mailing list and posting a query on there. Also, check the London section on the Genuki site -- that's UK and Ireland Genealogy at www.genuki.org.uk -- to see if there is a surname list for London area. If you're lucky, CABANES might have been listed there by another researcher. If not, you may be able to add the name there yourself for others to find. Hope these comments have been helpful.
