    1. [HWE] HUGUENOTS & WALLOONS by Lorine McGinnis Schulze
    2. Robert H. Ferree
    3. Hi, If you would be so kind, I would appreciate a translation of the following French phrase quoted from the above copywriter article (see the caps): "One of the elders here, living at Oisemont, was David Des Marets, SIEUR de FERETS and in 1625 he represented the church." My family traces back to Ferets and this might be of interest to me. Thank you. Bob -- Robert H. & Doris A. Ferree P.O. 1. Re: [HWE] HUGUENOTS & WALLOONS by Lorine McGinnis Schulze
    2. HI, 'Sieur ' is effectively the owner of an estate called........ The estate is not NOBLE, and therefore the owner does not have feudal rights over it, like the wonderful' Droit de Seigneur'(!!!), So the bearer of this title is purely the owner of a particular piece of land designated as .......... More often than not, the owner was quite rich and on the way up! His next xtep would be to purchase a 'Noble' fief, (i.e. a Manor with feudal rights) which would get him further up the social ladder, or, in the event that he could bargain with the Royal demesne, he could have the estate turned into a 'noble' one and thus acquire 'nobility' through the ownership of a 'noble' estate rather than having it conferred upon him. In short, your ancestor was of a family some local standing, who probably obtained his wealth from a notarial or legal activity. hope this answers your question. There is another angle to this, however. It could be that the owner was a Noble but his father did not have enough 'noble' estates to pass around, so he gave him one that was not! Pierre

    1. [HWE] My LAFFOON brick wall is the Western Ocean
    2. William M. Sumner
    3. I respond here in part to Andrea's exhortation addressed to "Lurkers and a Browser." Technically I guess I'm not a lurker since I did post what I would call "an unrequited query," which I repeat here with additions. You must understand‹the justifiably stern focus of this list on EUROPEAN Huguenots and Walloons is rather intimidating for those of us whose search for our European Huguenot origins has reached a dreadful dead end. We have very little to offer those happy folks who have already established their European bona fides. Here then, is more than you may wish to read about my LAFFOON brick wall at this shore of the Western Ocean. Descendants of several branches of the LAFFOON family found in 18th century Virginia have preserved traditions that the early LAFFOONs in America were either Huguenot refugees or were descended from Huguenot refugees who had initially settled in England (specifics in # 4), Ireland (specifics in # 5), or elsewhere in Europe (no specifics). I seek assistance or comment on the following issues: 1. Can anyone provide documentation for the surname LAFFOON (this spelling, not a variant) in England, Ireland, or anywhere in Europe? Recent postings on this list have not included LAFFOON, nor have I found it in numerous published European surname lists or web databases. 2. Is there any documentation for LAFFOON in North America earlier then James LAFFOON who appears on the James City County Quit Rent Rolls in 1704 and later in the Blissland Parish Vestry Book in the colony of Virginia? 3. The surname LAFON(T or D) and variants are documented among Huguenots in France and England. However, I have not seen an etymological justification for the belief that LAFFOON derives from the this source. Although both LAFON and LAFFOON are found in 18th century Virginia, there is no indication that these families were related and they generally lived in separate counties. I am not aware of any instances when LAFON (T or D) was changed to LAFFOON although I can document a change in the opposite direction in the late 19th century, USA. A participant in the LAFFOON list has this to say: "The names Lafoe,Lafont,Lafon,Lafong and Lafond are all pronounced the same in French. 'Lafong' appears to be a concession to English spelling, however, to obtain a more nasilized 'o', as in French. 'Laffoon' is definitely an anglicization of this name." I am not able to evaluate this statement, and it isn't clear where it may lead, but comment would be welcome. 4. In 1702 land in Virginia was granted for "transportation of three persons" one of whom was "John LOOFFONE" (reading not yet confirmed). In 1759 Nathan and Matthew LAFFOON received a land patent from George II. These grants may vaguely suggest that the family passed through England on their way to Virginia. Someone once said they had seen LAFFOON in the IGI for Great Britain, but I have been unable to find such an entry. I have also looked at several of the folio publications of the Huguenot Society of London without success. 5. A member of the LAFFOON family, now deceased, produced an undocumented descent chart that went back to a father and son in Ireland as follows: a) Phillip LAFFOON b. 5 Sept 1632 in West Dublin, Ireland, d. 3 Dec 1703 in West Dublin. M. 23 July 1658 to Hyacinth BLENNERHASSETT b. 1 Aug 1632 in Kilkenny, Castlecomer Co. Ireland, d 1702 in West Dublin. They had a son: b) Bernard LAFFOON b. 1659/60 West Dublin, d. 25 April 1727 James City Co. Virginia. M. Hannah CARLISLE, daughter of Joshua T. CARLISLE and Katie McDONALD of West Dublin, b. 12 April 1660 West Dublin, d. 27 April 1727 James City Co. Virginia. ---And on for two generations in Virginia, with difficult problems that raise doubts. Apparently none of this information has been documented in Ireland or in Virginia. This autumn I will travel to Virginia and give it a whirl, but have no idea how to approach the Irish leads, if indeed they aren't mis-leads. Suggestions most gratefully received; look-ups in Ohio records offered. Cheers, Bill Sumner .

    1. [HWE] HUGUENOTS, quoi d'autre?
    2. I, ve discovered some intriguing Huguenot sites... http:auriol.free.fr/huguenots.htm http://irht.cnrs-orleans.fr/meto/mo2103.htm http://pages.infinit.net/barbeaum/fichier/index.htm http://www.cpo.asso.fr/semences/afrique.htm http://www.spindleworks.com/music/hugo/psautier.htm I am also on the French list and there seems to have been a resurgence of interest in huguenots - several personal sites have cropped up with many huguenots ancestors - I have left a messsage to all with huguenot antecedents/ websites to make them available to our list, even if they are all in french..... I discovered these sites when one of the French listers told us about a phenomenal search engine at www.copernic.com There are three or four versions, one of which you can download free!!!!! As regards the huguenot sites. It looks as if I'm blowing my horn with the first one - but I'm not... Here's the story.... Trawling through the web one very late night, I came across the name AURIOL... The gentleman in question had a website for all of the name Auriol. In it he surmised that there was an English/protestant branch. I sent him an e-mail to tell him that I had, about twenty years ago, written the definitive genealogy of the auriol family of Switzerland and Britain, and would , as a matter of courtesy, send him forty odd pages by fax.... I never heardca peep from him... and promised myself , after two weeks that I would never try to help someone again. It was only when I downloaded copernic that I discovered that he had thanked me in his own way! The sites are in French, but anyone who can understand it should try them! Bye for Now! Pierre

    1. [HWE] Threaded Archives: sixth update
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Fellow listers, Finally, here is another update about the situation in our threaded archives. My apologies for waiting so long with this -- I have had a really frustrating time trying to get some answers about it from Rootsweb. As many of you know, there have been on-going problems with Rootsweb *threaded* archives beginning in mid-March. (The Interactive or Searchable archives has always been OK, or so Rootsweb has said.) I have posted quite a few messages to you about this problem in an effort to keep you informed -- dated 23 March, 8 April, 4 May, 6 June and 13 June. You can find them in the Interactive archives, using key words: threaded archives. This problem happened because Rootsweb ran out of disk space. The installation of more disk space (beginning in March) would rectify the problem, according to Rootsweb. However, it hasn't. I have been sending inquiries, for over a month now, to Rootsweb staff who are responsible for the archives. I've gotten no responses, let alone answers. As a result, I've become quite irritated with the whole thing. Here's the extent of the problem. If you go to the threaded archives for our list, you will see that the April archives has only 20% of messages that were actually posted that month (54 messages, dated April 1-6, out of a total of 270). The situation for May is worse, with only 8% of messages there (only 9 out of a total of about 110 messages, dated 25 to 28 May). The June threaded archives seemed to be fine up until the 18th -- after that, no further messages got into the archives for that month. The archives for July looks fine *so far*. My questions to Rootsweb have been simple, in my opinion -- Where are the missing messages? Will they eventually appear where they should be in the archives? If so, when? If not, should I have listers re-post them? All I've gotten is silence. Which mystifies me, because ours is not the only list affected. I think many, if not most, are. Finally, in sheer frustration, I contacted the Rootsweb HelpDesk and, for the first time, someone actually replied, and promptly too -- but much of the info given was not new. Here is what I was told. "The problem is that it has gotten too big for the server. It has to be broken up and put on new ones. However, with the merger, everyone has been busy. No excuse for no answer though and (we) do apologize for that. This notice is on the threaded archives: Important System Notices: The Search Engine we are using has hit an architectural limit and can no longer index the entire site. Work is under way to break up the search engine into per-list databases.......do not have a time estimate but can assure you they are aware of the problem and they have assured us no data will be lost. They are still storing the posts, they just can't display them. (We) apologize for the inconvenience and the confusion." So, it appears Rootsweb is working on the problem, but one can only guess at how long it will take to rectify it (it's been over four months now). And, in spite of the assurances that messages will *not* be lost and will eventually turn up in the threaded archives, I have continued to save all list posts (since March) "just in case". So, if you do go to the threaded archives which is at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/Huguenots-Walloons-Europe/ , be aware that some messages are missing in April, May and June. All other months are OK. Otherwise, please use the keyword search method at the Searchable or Interactive archives at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl . I will, of course, post other updates if/when I learn anything new. Andrea

    3. Some La Rochelle info of general interest: Rochelle, La , city (1990 pop. 73,744), capital of Charente-Maritime dept., W France, on the Bay of Biscay. Industries include naval, aircraft, and automobile construction. La Rochelle is the principal French fishing port on the Atlantic coast. Chartered in the 12th cent., it soon became one of the chief seaports of France. It was a Huguenot stronghold during the Wars of Religion and successfully resisted Catholic besiegers for half a year (1572–73). However, when Cardinal Richelieu resolved to crush the Huguenots, La Rochelle fell after a siege of 14 months (1627–28). Louis XIV had the port refortified by Vauban; his revocation (1685) of the Edict of Nantes resulted in the foundation of New Rochelle, N.Y., by Protestant refugees. La Rochelle prospered again as it became the chief center of trade with Canada, but it suffered from the loss of Canada by France and from the Continental System under Napoleon. Although its fisheries, canneries, and shipyards still make it a busy port, La Rochelle never recovered its former importance. The principal harbor is now at La Pallice, some 3 mi (5 km) distant. The picturesque old fishing port in the heart of the city, the Renaissance town hall, and other old buildings make the city a favorite tourist center. 1. [HWE] A Tale of Two Lurkers and a Browser (re-posting)
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hello to all -- since it's very quiet around here lately, I thought I would re-post my Lurkers Tale which I first sent to the list on 28 March. For those who do not know, a lurker is someone who seldom -- perhaps never -- posts to the list. Now, I know that we in North America and Europe are in the midst of the lazy days of summer. And those "down under" should be snug in mid-winter. No doubt you are all busy with other things in life. But I also hope that The Lurkers' Tale will motivate you to take a few moments to post to the list. I hope everyone will read this as a gentle and humourous reminder from me, your List Concierge, about the purpose of mailing lists -- which is sharing information with others by posting to the list, hopefully on a regular basis. It's a serious message but, listers, please realize that it was also written in a spirit of fun. Here's the Tale...... Once upon a time in Computer Land, in a place called The List, there were two Lurkers. They were unknown to each other but both were interested in the very same thing. Each had come to The List to try and learn more about the thing they were so interested in. Now, both being Lurkers, they preferred to stay in the background and say nothing. So no one else knew they were there. Except for the List Concierge who watched and waited to see what they would do. The List Concierge also knew that there were dozens of other Lurkers in the place called The List. Although she had tried a few times to coax the Lurkers into becoming Posters and Participants, she felt that she hadn't been as successful as she would have liked. Some of the Lurkers spoke to the List Concierge privately so she knew they had lots of questions and also lots of information to share. Because of this, the List Concierge sometimes said to herself "It would be nice if all the Lurkers each spent just one day a month being a Poster or a Participant." Then she would have been content. But she didn't know how to make this happen. Time went by (as it tends to do) and, while some of the things that went on at The List were interesting, none contained exactly the thing that the two Lurkers were most interested in. The first Lurker said to herself, "I'm waiting for the thing I am interested in to be mentioned here." The second Lurker asked himself, "I wonder if anyone will say something about what I am interested in?" More time went by -- but it's hard to tell in Computer Land exactly how much time. Then, one day, the first Lurker left The List because, as she explained privately to the List Concierge, no one had mentioned the thing she was most interested in. The second Lurker, in spite of being a bit discouraged, decided to stay on The List, watching and reading quietly, in the hope that, eventually, someone would say something about what he was interested in. Meanwhile, a Browser wandered by. If truth be told, she didn't actually go to The List although she was certainly nearby. She decided to go to The List Archives to see if anything there interested her. If it did, perhaps she would stay. Because she was interested in one thing in particular and wanted to see if she would find it there. Although she didn't know it, of course, this was the very same thing that the two Lurkers were also interested in. So, as Browsers do, she browsed through The List Archives. She found quite a bit that was interesting and even useful there. But she did not find any mention of what interested her the most. She sighed in disappointment and went on her way. She had heard of other List Archives out there. Maybe one of those held the information she was looking for. And the moral of this little tale, dear listers, is......................???

    1. [HWE] Surname extracts > Walloon Church, Canterbury, Kent, ENG
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hi listers -- In hopes that this info will help someone out there, I am posting these extracts taken from the records of the Walloon or Strangers' Church in Canterbury, Kent, ENG. This is in Vol. 5 of the Quarto series, Hug. Soc. of London publications, also on two LDS films # 0086956 & 0086957. The extracts include only baptisms and marriages -- I haven't done the deaths/burials as yet. I did these extracts specifically for the surname OLIVE but other names also in my family line are mentioned here such as: VER(R)E, BLANCHAR(D), FEDERBE, BUZINE or BUSINE, BROUNE, DE TIENVILLE, LE POINT, and TEVELIN. While I have no known connection to most of the other names also mentioned, someone else on this list might. For example, there is the surname WATSON (isn't that one mentioned by "desperate" Darlene on 14 July??). Also, there is DAMBRIN and DANBRINNE. I know that Chris posted re: surnames DANBRINE or D'ANBRINNE, also on July 14. Then there is DUTHOIT, a name which Malinda has posted about in the past. I am sure there are also other names which will interest some of you. Enjoy! If anyone has a blinding flash of revelation as a result of these extracts, please post here with the news. Even if there is no blinding flash but perhaps a small glimmer, let us know about that too. Andrea Alphabetical listing of surnames which appear in the extracts -- AMBLETON, BLANCHAR, BOITTOUT, BROUNE, BURET(TE), BUSIN(N)E, BUTIN, BUZIN(E), CAREY, CHONBERT, DAMBRIN, DANBRINNE, DARAGON, D'ARBLADE, DASSELAR, DE BURE, DECHAUFOUR, DE CONTE, DEFARVAQUE, DE FRANC, DE JARDIN, DELABRE, DELO, DERNOCOUR, DESBOUVERYE, DESCOU, DESPAIGNE, DE TIENVILLE, DEVIM(E), DEVINE, DOIS, DOUAY, DU CRO, DU HAMEL, DU HAMME, DUPUIS, DUTHOIT, DUTRY, FAUVARQUE, FEDERBE, FRIMAN, FROMY, GODEN, GO(O)DIN, GODRAN, GUERARD, GUERER, HON(N)ORE, HOUCQ, LANSEL(LE), LASSEE, LE CLERCQ, LE FRANC, LE GRAND, LEMAUGRE, LEPINE, LE POINT, LASSEE, LE ROY, LOISEL, MALET, MESMAN, MESSIAN, MILLE, MILLON, MINTRU, OLIVE, OLIVEER, PAS, PINCON, PIPELART, PIQUE, POS, POTEVIN, RICHESBOURG, ROOKS, SQUEDIN, TEMPREMAN, TEVELIN, VECE, VERAY, VERE, VERRE, WATERLO, WATSEN, WATSON (Note: abbreviation Tém. = Témoin = witness.) 3. I had posted that I was looking for information on Frances LAMBERT b 1692 in France who arrived in the Carolina Colony as a young child. She married John MOORE in NY in 1713. Yesterday, Steve, who is a descendant of John Moore gave me information that her parents were Denis (sometimes called Daniel) Lambert and Frances BRINKMAN (Francoise Brinqueman), Huguenots from France. Does this couple sound familiar to anyone? Audrey

    1. [HWE] La Rochelle, FRA > Church records
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Listers -- The following listing of church records for La Rochelle, Charente-Martime, FRA was obtained from the LDS web site (www.familysearch.org ) under Place Search. These churches were: Temple Saint-Yon, Salle Saint-Michel, Temple Neuf, Salle Gargoulleau, Temple de la Villeneuve, Grand Temple and Sainte-Marguerite. While it does seem like there are a lot of records for these churches, note that most of them only cover a short time span, with some exceptions. Most also only include baptisms and marriages, but no deaths or burials. Also note that, often, records for more than one church are on the same film. Does anyone on the list have information to share about the community of La Rochelle? Or sources to consult which would "flesh out" the details about it? I know it is an area where many Huguenots originated yet I cannot recall seeing many details about this location, other than that it was a place of origin. If anyone has any info about La Rochelle which they would like to share, I hope you will post it here. And, by the way, instructions for doing a Place Search (ie. accessing listings for a particular location, worldwide) are -- Once on the LDS web site, click on Custom Search (top right corner), then on Family History Library Catalog, then on Place Search. Next, type in the name of the place you are interested in and a listing of sub-headings will appear. Click on specific sub-headings to access further info. Hope this is of interest to listers researching ancestors who originated in this area of France. Andrea 1) Registres paroissiaux, 1577-1630 de l'Eglise réformée: Temple Saint-Yon. 3. Clyde You asked where the Society of Huguenot publications could be found. I found copies in the Society of Genealogists library in London. I assume they would be in the Copyright Libraries, and VERY major libraries worldwide. They were by subscription, so the circulation is probably limited, and I believe most were published before 1915. (I think Andrea did a piece about the Huguenot Society pubs). So far as I know they are not on the internet - but maybe somebody knows better? Regards Ron Dobrée

    1. [HWE] REAMAN: Book on Huguenots
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. In her post today (July 17), Shirley Arabin <arabin@wave.co.nz> mentioned a book about Huguenots by author Reaman, published 1964. I am not sure which post she was responding to but I thank her for this contribution. Using the search engine at http://www.bookradar.com/ which was posted by lister Marty Graybill on 6 July (thanks, Marty!), I was able to find out more details about this particular book. The author is George Elmore REAMAN. The title of the book is "The Trail of the Huguenots in Europe, the USA, South Africa and Canada" and it contains "the story of the great exodus of the Huguenots from France at the end of the seventeenth century." It was published in Baltimore by Genealogical Publishing in 1963 and also in London by Muller in 1964. If anyone is interested, the Bookradar site lists several copies that are available from various places. And, by the way, Marty described Bookradar as "an excellent place to start a search for old, new or out of print books (which) searches many sources for books then shows the listings and you just click a button to order what you find, (also) shows conditions of each copy listed." After just a quick look at this site, I would agree with this description. It seems like a good place to start looking for books -- and, like Marty, I own no shares in Bookradar nor do I stand to profit from it in any way <g>. Hope this info has been useful to somebody. Andrea

    1. [HWE] Where next? -- London research
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. This is in response to a post from Darlene <tony@ar.com.au> on 14 July in which she confessed that she's "getting desperate" (oh, no!....) on finding any new info on her PALLIER, WATSON and WILLCOCKS lines. I am sure many of us can sympathize with these feelings. Hang in there, Darlene! Most of us have been there -- it's that (dreaded) brick wall. I can't offer you anything specific on your surnames but I can offer some advice to you -- and anyone researching in London -- on possibly where to turn next. Maybe others can offer further suggestions. First, check the GENUKI site (www.genuki.org) to see if there is any useful information there re: what you want to know about London (eg.churches). GENUKI stand for Genealogy in UK and Ireland. And, if there is a surname list there for London, add your surnames to it so other researchers can find you. Also consider joining a Family History Society (FHS) for the London area. There should be info about this on GENUKI. Next, if you've not already done so, I would recommend joining either or both the London-L list and the Middlesex-L list and posting some queries on there. When researching a particular area, it's best to be asking questions among a group of people who are interested in the same area. You never know what useful info they may have to share. Mailing lists for London can be found on Cyndi's List (www.cyndislist.org) and also on John Fuller's Genealogy Resources on the Internet at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/internet.html. I hope this helps but, if not, please feel free to cry on our shoulders any time. No one promised that this hobby would be easy or quick -- it so often isn't -- but the key is to have fun during the search -- no matter how long that search may be! Andrea
