Marriages could be by banns -- in which case, banns were read in the church on three consecutive Sundays and, if there were no objections raised, the marriage took place. Some marriages were by licence, though -- in this case, banns were bypassed, for a fee. Reasons for this varied. If you find a marriage by licence which interests you, please check the Canterbury Marriage Licence Records. These sometimes -- but not always -- give additional information such as ages of bride and groom, names of their fathers, groom's occupation. I know these Records are at the Cathedral Archives in Canterbury but, if you don't happen to be passing by that way, they have have been filmed by LDS. Look in the Family History Library Catalog (FHL) under Canterbury, Kent, ENG. END
Fellow listers -- These surname extracts from the BT's of Canterbury St. Margaret have been posted in two parts, because they are quite lengthy. What follows is Part 1 (up to 1750), with Part 2 (1751-1812) also posted today, with same subject line. This particular parish was searched 1662/3 to 1812. I started earlier than St. George's simply because the handwriting was manageable from that date. However, it's still tough going in the early time periods because some letters look nothing like the ones we write today. I will repeat what I said in the post re: extracts from St. George, ie. I am not saying that *all* these surnames were *definitely* Huguenot -- I know that some are but others *might be*. Notice that some of the same names occur both here and in St. George's. As with St. George, I also found surnames FEDARB, OLIVE, POUT, FREMOULT (FREMAULT) and TEVELIN here. All have connections to my own ancestry and I will post them at some future time. I also repeat my previous caution: anyone interested in this parish or any of these names, please check the original records themselves to verify. Hope this is helpful to somebody. If so, please post. On searching a Victorian periodical now on the internet (Notes and Queries Vol 11 (285) Apr 14 1855 page 287) I came across an interesting list of the "first participants" in the drainage of the Isle of Axholme divided into a French and Dutch list. On the French list was MARRILION which is one of my names. The web site is at http://www.bodley.ox.ac.uk/ilej/ The list has apparently been extracted from "A Brief Account of the drainage of the level of Hatfield Chase and patrs adjacent in the Counties of York, Lincoln and Nottingham" said to be by Abraham de la Pryme. The names of the first participants were FRENCH DUTCH Laflour Beharrell Sterpin Lebrand Vandebro Dubertlat Porce Lera Taffin (Taffinder) Legrain Brounyee (Brounyou) Damulir Massingall Marrillion Baw (Bay) Rebon Grebolt Davertion Marquecheir Clate Kierby There are additionally other names mentioned.
Hi, all -- Here are the surname extracts from the BT's of Canterbury St. George. This parish was searched 1685/6 to 1812. The records begin c1600 but I chose 1685/6 as the place to start simply because the handwriting got to be what I considered readable at that point! I hope everyone understands that I am not saying that *all* these surnames were *definitely* Huguenot -- some are but all I can say about others is that they *might be*. Also, a lot of them have been mangled by the spelling of the English-speaking person who wrote them so one has to imagine what they might have been in the original French. Some of these surnames we have seen before on this list. For example, VALDER, WALRAVEN, and CRICKETT were all mentioned in connection with the Walloon settlement at Sandwich. Others have been mentioned in previous posts and can be found in the archives (although this is sometimes a tricky business with all the spelling variants). Re: surnames SPAIN and DESPAIGNE -- it is interesting how some families apparently anglicized to SPAIN and others did not. I also found surnames FEDARB, OLIVE, POUT, FREMOULT AND TEVELIN here -- they are the ones that particularly interest me and I will post details about them at another time. Hello Kaye and Others: May I add a comment - the handwritten registers I would think are as basically accurate as we can get but we should be careful of the handwritten transcripts (i.e. Bishop's Transcripts and Archdeacon's Transcripts) of the Church of England's parish registers - because of the early handwriting etc. I have found a number of errors in spelling in the transcripts, which may have been as early as the original registers, or nearly so - just a caution. Hello Listers, I'd like to add my twopenneth to Andrea's comments on primary and secondary sources if I may. While I agree with her cautions about copies (BTs vs. original registers for example) I have a nagging question: does a filmed copy of a parish register lose its primary status because its a copy ? I'd argue not. It seems to me the major distinction between a primary and a secondary source is the time frame within which it is written and from which the information in it is drawn. Thus a birth certificate contains both contemporary (primary) information (the birth date of the child) and secondary information (eg. the marriage date/place/age etc. of the parents, occasionally, but not usually, contemporaneous with the birth). This distinction is further illustrated by the difference between a collection of documents as used by history students, contemporary with, and illustrating the life of say, the18th century in London, and a book ABOUT the same subject and period written in the 20th century. On this basis a primary source consists of material written at the time of the events described, by people who took part in, observed or were in charge of these events, while a secondary source is someone else's second hand and later account of what (they think) went on. On that basis I wouldn't say that a hand transcription of a parish register lost its primary status, only that it was a few degrees less "pure" or reliable than the original, whereas a history of the parish written in the 20th century would certainly be a secondary source. I'll refrain from further pedantry, and direct you to a very good article on Cyndi's List about this issue. The Quarto Series Volumes 140 has been indexed by the Society of Australian Genealogists, Richmond Villa, 129 Kent Street, Sydney, NSW 2000, Australia. It is on microfiche and it is available for purchase. The Quarto Series themselves Volumes 147 are also on microfiche and can be purchased individually from The Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland, c/o The Huguenot Library, University College, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT, England. They are also available for viewing on microfilm at any of the LDS Family History Centres. There is a Master Index to the Proceedings Volumes 126, a large book of 300 pages, which is also available for purchase from the Huguenot Library. It contains many thousands of names. The Wagner Collection has also been Microfiched recently and is available for purchase individually from the Huguenot Library as well as being available on microfilm at the LDS Family History Centres. You haven't mentioned where or when. There was a very prominent Parke(s) family in Wilkes Co NC in the 1800s that i see mentioned a lot on the regional lists.....don't know if that helps or not. malinda "E. Hi, fellow listers -- Before I post the info from the Canterbury parishes of St. George and St. Margaret, I wanted to make some comments, offer some cautions and state some opinions. If any of you have anything to add, for or against, please post to the list. Remember, these are my opinions but they are widely held among genealogists. (The following remarks are an adaptation of a post first sent to the list on 22 April in regard to my look-ups in the records of "Naturalizations and Denizations for Aliens in England". However, this touches on a subject I think we should always keep in mind as we do our research so I think it's worth repeating.) First, it is generally recognized that a genealogist's standard of research should be, first and foremost, to obtain info from primary sources for authenticity (if at all possible). By primary sources, I mean original records. Anything else is a secondary source which should be checked against the primary source. By secondary sources I mean any of the following:-- copies or transcripts of originals, extracts from originals, any material sent to you by someone else, anything you read in a book, on a mailing list, on a web site or elsewhere on the internet, etc. Please understand -- I am not saying info in these sources is always wrong. But it could be. I am just saying this -- you need to authenticate the truth of the info by verifying it yourself in primary (ie. original) sources. Sometimes, of course, it's not possible to see the primary sources. In this case, you go with the best you've got, cross your fingers and hope it's correct. And mention your source (with a caution) in any material you compile and/or pass on to others. Now, sometimes even primary sources are wrong. An example is my own parents' marriage certificate which contains no less than seven errors! But, the primary sources are all we have, short of inventing a time machine and going back into the past. Here are some comments specifically about the Canterbury surname extractions I will post soon. In the first place, the filmed records I took these from are a copy of the original records. This copy is called the Bishop's Transcripts (BT's). Once a year, each parish was required to make a copy of all the baptisms, marriages and burials which had occurred in that parish over the previous year. Therefore, the vicar or the curate (or possibly his clerk or one of his churchwardens) made a copy, from info he had written in his original parish registers (PR's), then sent this copy in to the Bishop. Obviously, errors could have occurred when making this copy. As a result, there can be differences between the BT's and the PR's (and also in a second copy which was made, called the AT's or Archdeacon's Transcripts). You might find details in one which are not in the other. Or particular entries may be missing altogether. So, when I researched the BT's on film at my local FHC, what I was researching was a copy of the original. When I extracted surnames, I made a (partial) copy of that copy. First, I hand-wrote extracts from the BT's. Then, I used those handwritten notes to type the info into my computer. This chain of events can lead to errors even though I made every effort, of course, to be accurate. But I'm only human so mistakes or omissions could have occurred. This is also not a secondary source anymore -- this is a copy of a copy of a copy. So, please verify for yourself, at some point, any info which I post, by going back to the originals. Do not rely only on what I have sent to the list. This advice applies to any info I post, past and future. As I mentioned earlier, I welcome any comments on this issue from other listers. Andrea
Concerning index of names found in Hug Soc Quarto series. There is an index of surnames available on microfiche. I think that it was produced in Australia. Members of the NZ Soc of Genealogists can access it through the Greater London Interest Group who hold the Huguenot material. Shirley Arabin. Listers -- Here is something which may be of interest to those of you researching in Germany. However, it also looks like there may be something in here to interest most of us, seeing as the description of the material states that it is a "series on Huguenot leaders, churches and settlements throughout the world". It's "Geschichtsblätter des Deutschen Hugenotten-Vereins. Verlegungsort ändert sich" (it's written in German). This is an historical series which has been published by the German Huguenot Society. A further description states that: "entries in the series are filed separately by author and title in the catalog, and may be traced by subject." I found this on the LDS site (www.familysearch.org) via a Place Search for France and under sub-heading: Emigration and Immigration. It is on microfiche # 6000819, a total of 62 fiche in all, so it's obviously a huge amount of material. The ISBN/ISSN is 03442934. This listing is cross referenced to other related info under the following locations and sub-headings -- Germany - Minorities Germany - Church history Germany - Emigration and immigration France - Minorities France - Church history Huguenots If anyone has any further info about this series, I hope they will post to the list. I received some interesting history on my Parks family lately. It informed me that the earliest known Parks (my line) were Huguenots who lived in France, where the name was spelled Parc. Later they fled to the British Isles in order to avoid persecution by Roman Catholics. The earliest known individual named Parks was John, who, tradition says, was brought as a young child to America by his father. I am hoping that there is someone who is familiar with this. Any Parks maybe? Sincerely, Elaine

The story in my family has been that there were two brothers who were Flemish weavers and they settled in Lisburn, Northern Ireland. They were Protestants and the name was Prasha or Presho or Prasher. I am trying to make a link to Europe and wondered if someone on this list recognised this name. Is is a Huguenot name? Hi everyone, Within the next day or so, I hope to post some surname extractions from two Canterbury (Kent, ENG) parishes -- that of St. George and also St. Margaret. Before I do that, though, I had some comments so thought I would do that separately. I will also be sending a second post to the list, with subject line: Primary vs secondary sources. This is an edited version of info first posted on 22 April but I think it bears repeating. So be on the look-out for that one. It's information which I think is important to keep in mind. First, about Canterbury. If you think or know that you have ancestors who attended the Walloon or Strangers Church there, it's a good idea to check the records of the Canterbury parishes (ie. Church of England records) as well. The problem is that there were 17 parishes within the city of Canterbury itself. And because they were populous, they take *a lot of time* to go through. It might be best to start with the parishes most heavily attended by the refugees (ie. St. Alphege, St. Mary Northgate, St. Peter, Holy Cross Westgate, and St. Mildred). But even in other parishes such as St. George and St. Margaret, some of their names still pop up. If you can't get to the original records in England, the LDS church has filmed them. If you'd like to make a virtual visit to Canterbury, there is The Canterbury Tour web site at http://www.hillside.co.uk/tour/tour.html. This URL and other info re: city of Canterbury and the Walloon Church was first posted to this list on 2 May with subject line: Canterbury, Kent, ENG: Walloon Church & community. It should be accessible in the list archives using those keywords. Next, a few details about the churches of St. George and St. Margaret. Both are in the busy central area of the city which is usually bustling with tourists and shoppers, and not far from the Cathedral. So, they still are in existence -- sort of -- well, really only their outer shells. Let me explain. First, about St. George's. By the way, the English dramatist Christopher Marlowe was baptised in this church in 1564. But, sadly, only a portion of the outer walls are still standing. The inside is empty and the floor has been paved with ashphalt. On one wall is a plaque, explaining that this church, and the surrounding area, was destroyed during a single bombing raid in World War II (1942, I seem to remember). Because of the destruction in this area of the city, most of the the surrounding buildings are new. For some photographic views of St. George's as it is today, go to: http://www.hillside.co.uk/tour/c41.html and/or http://www.hillside.co.uk/tour/d9.html and/or http://www.hillside.co.uk/tour/c35.html. I would be interested to know if there are any online photos of St. George's before it was destroyed -- if anyone knows of one, please post to the list. St. Margaret's is a few minutes' walk away from St. George's, also in a busy shopping and pedestrian area. From the outside, the building probably looks much the same as it always has but that is just its outer shell -- inside it has been completely changed into a tourist attraction called The Canterbury Tales. When I first saw this building in 1986, the entire inner core of the church was being removed and excavated. Gravestones were leaning against the walls and around the perimeter of the churchyard. In 1994, the last time I was in Canterbury, I paid for a ticket and went inside with my daughter where we experienced, through visual and auditory displays in dark little nooks & crannies & corridors, the "sights, sounds and smells" of Canterbury as it supposedly was at the time of Chaucer. For views of this church as it looks today, go to: http://www.hillside.co.uk/tour/c66.html and/or http://www.hillside.co.uk/tour/c69.html . So, that's my "lead in" for the surname extracts from these parishes. I hope this was of interest, even to those of you not researching in this area. Andrea

Sorry, everyone, in my post re: DU PREE, etc on 26 July, I mentioned the GRD without explaining what it was -- for new subscribers who may be unaware of it or others on the list who missed the information. The GRD stands for the Genealogical Research Directory. This resource is fully explained in the list archives. There was a post on 19 Jne with subject line: GRD = Genealogical Research Directory. That can be accessed through the Searchable archives at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl , typing in the above subject line as your keywords. Also, the threaded archives contains the first post on this topic, with subject line: GRD=valuable resource -- what is it? You should be able to view that one, posted 17 March at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/Huguenots-Walloons-Europe-L/ . All for now. Andrea
