    3. Thank you for your most generous offer Andrea... My look up request is for John DOUTHIT...this surname could have a wide range of spellings (and mis-spellings) John DOUTHIT was born 9 May 1709 in Coleraine, N. Ireland the Presbyterian weaver son of Robert Andrew DOUTHIT (b 1684, Coleraine). He was the son of Andrew DOUTHIT (b 1657, Aberdeen). I would also like to request a look-up for the JOB(E) or JOAB surname. I had thought that they were Welsh (from Fishguard, Wales) but I saw some notes recently that indicated they were a family of Weavers who had fled religious persecution. The inter-married with the DOUTHITs in Rowan Co. NC after migrating there from Frederick Co MD and Chester Co PA. My earliest JOB was Thomas JOB (b 1655, in New England). His son John JOB was born in PA...his grandson Thomas JOB was born 1710 in Chester Co PA ; married Mary GORDON in VA abt 1740 and died 15 Nov 1787, Rowan Co NC Thanks again for whatever help you can provide...this is so nice of you...malinda

    2. Chris Leonard
    3. my ancestor, Henry FRANCISCO, who lived to be 134, told a professor who interviewed him in 1819 that he was from ESSEX. he was definitely a huguenot whose father had fled france once to marry in amsterdam. when henry was a small child (he was born in 1685), under 5 probably, his father fled again, first to holland, then england, then the US. since there is no place in france named essex i thought perhaps henry was referring to Essex Co. NJ where his father settled. but he might have meant england, so i thought it was worth checking. Henry's father's name has been given variously as John FRANCIS, John FRANSOY, and John FRANCISCO. in the original french it was probably JEAN FRANCOIS, and if he had spent time in holland it could also be JAN. i have also seen it FRANCISKUS, VAN SISCO, VAN CISCO, SISCO, etc. thank you! -- Rise like Lions after slumber In unvanquishable number — Percy Bysshe Shelley, The Call to Freedom ---------- >From: "Andrea Vogel" <andreav@island.net> >To: HUGUENOTS-WALLOONS-EUROPE-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [HWE] Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, ENG > Offer to Look Up >Date: Sat, Aug 5, 2000, 12:03 PM > > Hi, all of you on HWE list, > This post is to let you know that I am also willing to look up surnames > in the church records for Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, ENG upon request. 2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hi, all of you on HWE list, This post is to let you know that I am also willing to look up surnames in the church records for Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, ENG upon request. These are on LDS film # 0962137, also Vol. 20 of the Quarto series published by the Hug. Soc. of London. As with the Portarlington post, I am asking that following conditions be met for look-up requests. a) The request for look-up * must be* posted to the list and not sent to me privately. b) Requests for look-up **must have** a subject line like this (to alert me to the fact that you are requesting the look-up) -- SURNAME > Thorpe-le-Soken, Essex, ENG Look-up c) Your request post must contain some *details* about your surname and the reasons for thinking they might be at this location. I am asking that this procedure be followed because, as I said in the Portarlington post, everyone will be sharing their information yet, at the same time, making it clear that the post is a look-up request. In return, I will post everything I find to the list. It will not be sent to individuals privately. In this way, there will be more sharing of information back to the list. Also, as previously stated, this work as quickly as possible, but please bear in mind that my local FHC has cut back to summer hours of one part-day (Tuesday) per week. Looking forward to requests for this one. Andrea

    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Fellow listers -- This post is to let you know that I am willing to look up surnames in the church records for Portarlington, IRL upon request. These are on LDS film # 0962137, also Vol. 19 of the Quarto series published by the Hug. Soc. of London. However, I am asking that certain conditions be followed with these requests. These are the same ones I have asked for when I did previous look-ups. The conditions are as follows -- a) The request for look-up * must be* posted to the list and not sent to me privately. b) Requests for look-up **must have** a subject line like this (to alert me to the fact that you are requesting the look-up) -- SURNAME > Portarlington, IRL Look-up c) Your request post must contain some *details* about your surname and the reasons for thinking they might be at Portarlington or at least in Ireland. I am asking that this procedure be followed because, in this way, everyone will be sharing their information yet, at the same time, making it clear that the post is a look-up request. In return, I will post everything I find to the list. It will not be sent to individuals privately. In this way, there will be more sharing of information back to the list -- and sharing is the best way for a list to thrive. Also, please understand that I will complete this work as quickly as I can but my local FHC has cut back to summer hours so it is open only part of one day a week (Tuesdays). Also, I am just one person and records are often quite time consuming to record by hand. And there are often quite a few spelling variants to record. So, all I can promise is that the work will be done as time permits. Requests, anyone? Andrea

    3. Hi Andrea: Yes, I'm researching those areas but the dates are a bit late for me - my MARQUILLIERs were sentenced to permanent exile in October 1568 and made their way up to Cadzand, then some went to Middelburg, Walcheren (after they stayed in Flushing for a while), some went to Amsterdam, Haarlem, and Leiden. Thanks for the information though - I'll check out that last film. 1. [HWE] Huguenot Surnames Index
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hello to everyone -- I just wanted to remind you all about the Huguenot Surnames Index posted by the Australian Family Tree Connections magazine (published monthly in Australia and New Zealand). The URL is: www.aftc.com.au/huguenot.html. This Index was started in 1994 by one of our subscribers, Michele Stephens, who is the publisher of the magazine. Since 1996, it has been online as well. Each month, all new entries are published in the magazine, then they are later added to the list on the web site. I know that some of our listers have already posted their surnames in the Index. Those of you who have not heard about it before might consider doing so. New names are being added all the time so regular checks of the site are a good idea. Entering your surnames into this Index is free. The only condition is that you must have personal knowledge or proof that these surnames were Huguenot in origin. Here are some additional details about the magazine -- Australian Family Tree Connections PO Box 322, Gosford NSW 2250, Australia Tel: (02) 4323 4201 [+61 2 4323 4201] Fax: (02) 4323 4111 [+61 2 4323 4111] AFTC Online: http://www.aftc.com.au Email: publisher@aftc.com.au That's all for this time. 2. Hi list, Over the last year, I have been researching the various names in my family. One name that came up was Mogeon. I just recently came across the name in Switzerland and East Prussia. Now I find that a bit odd because my ancestor, Anne Mogeon, was in La Tremblade and that is located on the West coast of France, south of La Rochelle. By toadies standards, not that impossible. But back then, quite a distance for her to have traveled, unless she the entire family split up, some going east and some going west. Any comments on this would be greatly appreciated. Jon A.

    1. [HWE] Pieter Bodine to Hambourg, Germany
    2. David Bodine
    3. Dear Listers, I found a record in the Leiden Municipal Archives dealing with a Pieter Bodine and was wondering how best to proceed in investigating it. I'd appreciate any suggestions. The record was in the "Uitgaande attestaties" from 1620 - 1889. These were testimonies that were written up by the church showing that the member was in good standing. They were used when moving from one place to another, usually within Holland. There isn't much information, just that a Pieter Bodine moved from Leiden to near Hambourg (Hamborch), Germany. His was written on 4-6-1661 in the Hooglandse Church. All the index says is "Bodijn, Pieter nr. buiten Hamborch (with the date). The librarian explained to me what this meant (nr. stands for nar). 3. LOOKING FOR COUSIN AND OUDART--Emigration year: circa 1875 from Namur, Belgium. My wife is a descendant of Alexandre Cousin married to Leonie Oudart who emigrated to Nicaragua after 1870 with their two children: Louis Alexandre and Blanche Cousin. Blanche married in Nicaragua on April 25, 1892 to Jose Santos Zelaya (1853-1919) who was President of Nicaragua from 1893 to 1909. Blanche was in Nicaragua the First Lady for 17 years. We know that al least Blanche Cousin was born in Namur, Belgium. After 1909 when her husband lost the Presidency, Blanche accompanied her husband to exile to Spain, France and later to the USA where he died in New York in 1919. She returned to Nicaragua where the descendants of Louis Alexandre and Blanche still live. The descendant of Blanche carry the Zelaya surname, while the descendant of Louis Alexandre carry the Cousin surname. My wife maiden name is Blanca Estrada-Cousin and was born in Managua, Nicaragua in 1937. Anybody there has a clue on where to search for the relatives of my wife in Belgium?

    1. [HWE] Department Archives: Nord and Pas-de-Calais
    2. David Bodine
    3. Dear Listers, Here is what I found out about the two archives mentioned above. I'll post another message later about the municipal archives I visited in this area. Nord Department Archives The Nord Department Archives at Lille are open Monday through Thursday from 9 am to noon (closed noon to 1 pm) and from 1 pm to 5:30 pm. On Friday, they close at 4:30. On Saturday, I think they are open from 9 to 12. They were closed for summer vacation, July 1-15, 2000. I believe this is an annual closure. The Archives telephone is (33) 03 20 93 87 17. The address is 22 rue St. Bernard. This is in the southern part of Lille. It's off of Metz Avenue. They have microfilm, books, journals, and other assorted reference materials. Some can be referenced by yourself, but most need to be signed out. Supposedly, you can only check out about eight things for the day, but I don't think that was enforced very much. There are a limited number of seats. I would get there early to make sure you get one, or at least a good one. Pas-de-Calais Department Archives The Pas-de-Calais Department Archives are located in the city of Arras in the Place (Plaza) de la Prefecture. Look for #12 over an arch in the Plaza. Go through the arch and there will be a kind of blue building down the alley. This is the Centre Georges-Besnier where the Archives are located. The address is 12 place Jean-Moulin (or Place de la Prefecture), 62018 Arras Cedex 09. The telephone is 03 21 21 61 90 and the fax is 03 21 21 62 98. Hours are 9-12 and 1-5 Monday through Friday. It is also open on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Saturdays of the month from 9-12 except on holidays and school vacations. There is no annual closure. They mostly have microfilm of church records here. You can access these by yourself. That makes things easier. Books along the back wall tell you, in general, what is on the microfilm, but many of the films are not indexed and would be very hard to decipher for the beginner in French research. However, along the back wall are books of records that have been organized by individuals and genealogical organizations. These are transcriptions of some of the church records with some indexing. They're a big help if the town you want to research happens to have been transcribed. Hope that helps someone, Dave Bodine

    1. [HWE] Info re: Wallonia, BEL
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hello, list -- I hope the following comments will be helpful. They are in response to a post today (2 Aug) from Tverdov@aol.com who posted about the MOSSAY surname, apparently originating in Frence, and also asking: < Can someone tell me what or where Wallonia was?> I don't have any info about the MOSSAY surname -- other than to offer my usual suggestion to try the IGI and other features on the LDS web site at www.familysearch.org which may give some clues. However, I can supply some information about Wallonia. It is a region of present-day Belgium which is located to the south of Brussels and between the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France. For further details about this region, please go to the following URL which is the page for Welcome to Wallonia! Belgium's Information Site -- http://www.wco.com/~sfwallon/ . There is also a web site called Wallonia: Genealogy Databank for French-speaking Belgium. The home page (in French) is at: http://users.skynet.be/wallonia/wallonia.htm . You can choose an English version once you are on this site or you can go directly to English at: http://users.skynet.be/wallonia/wallonia.htm#uk . There is a surname search feature on this page which may help in finding info re: MOSSAY. There were no dates included in the post from Tverdov@aol.com but I suspect that "Walloon" in this case is meant in the modern sense, not the historical sense that is usual on this list. For further comments on this topic, please see post of April 13 in list archives with subject line -- Walloons: modern vs historical. Good luck in your search. Hope this has helped. Andrea

    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hi, everyone -- This is a follow-up to my post yesterday (1 Aug) with subject line -- Records: Nord, FRA & Flanders, BEL, about the records of Lille, Nord FRA and other places in that area. Here are some additional records for the same border area between Northern France and Flanders in Belgium. I found them by cross-referencing with the Place Search for Lille on the LDS site (www.familysearch.org). In addition to further info re: Meenen (or Menin) in Belgium, the specific places mentioned are: In Belgium: Tournai (Hainaut), Ieper (West Vlaanderen), Namur (Namur) In France: Armentières (Nord) I wanted to include the URL for an online map site which would show this border area but couldn't find a good one. Anyone know of one? Andrea 1) Kerkelijke registers, 1707-1743, Waals Hervormde Kerk, Meenen, West Vlaanderen, Belgium. Dopen, trouwen. 2. Can anyone tell me origin of the surname MOSSAY. My great grandfather was Josef MOSSAY , lived in austro-Hungary but was born in France. I'm having trouble identifying it as a Hungarian name and I keep finding references to France and Walloonia. Can someone tell me what or where Wallonia was? Thanks tverdov@aol.com

    3. Listers -- In response to the post on 30 July by Alison <the.jacksons1@sympatico.ca> re: surnames PRASHA, PRESHO, PRASHER, possibly Huguenot and possibly originating with Flemish weaver family in Lisburn, IRL. Alison, you didn't mention dates so there is info as to how far back you have researched. The IGI (International Genealogical Index) on the LDS web site (www.familysearch.org) sometimes provides clues for a search such as this one so it's always worth a try (although one must keep in mind that the IGI is only an index -- ie. a secondary source -- with gaps, omissions and errors). In this case, a lot of PRASHER names came up in the British Isles. The vast majority were in Scotland, one or two in Ireland (eg. Lisburn) but almost all of them were in the last half of the 1800's, much too late to prove Huguenot ancestry. The variants given were PREUSSER, PRESSER, PREISER, PRICER, PRIZER, PRISER, etc. There was one PRESSER in 1647 in Devon. I also noticed that, in the case of those listed in Europe, the location mentioned was Germany. The spelling variants in these cases were PREUSSER, PREISER, I think. All this neither proves nor disproves Huguenot ancestry. But it *may* indicate that the name originated in Germany as something like PREUSSER or PREISER, then moved on to Scotland where it *possibly* became PRASHER, and then to Ireland. There was a lot of to-and- fro movement of people between Scotland and Ireland, although I have no idea if this happened amongst Huguenot refugees as well. So, it appears inconclusive as to whether these surnames are Huguenot/Walloon in origin. Alison asked: Is this a Huguenot name? This is a natural question that pops up from time to time among listers. There's no easy, fast answer to it. For more on this subject, please see any of following posts in list archives, with these dates and subject lines: 13 Jan Huguenot name? 22 Feb A Huguenot name? 20 Apr Comments re: Huguenot connections 8 Jne Huguenot name or not? It might be worth joining an Irish mailing list (Lisburn area?) to see if anyone there can help. Also might be worth joining a Scottish list seeing as the name seems to have been prevalent there. Don't know if all this has helped -- hope so. In the meantime, keep fingers crossed and keep trying <g>. Andrea
