Hi, listers -- (My, we're very quiet around here the last couple of days, aren't we??) Here is Part 5 of the surnames transcribed from the BT's of St. Peter in Canterbury. Please refer to my earlier posts for comments, explanations and cautions about these extractions. Have you noticed how many different spellings there have been for RICQUEBOURG over the years? Also, another interesting thing happened with VAN HESSENHOOY. That was the surname spelling for Hendrick when he married here in 1747 (see Part 4). Before long, however, he was Henry and the surname spelling was HES(S)ENHOY. Then, as you will see below, the spelling suddenly changed to ESSINHIGH. In the space of twenty years, Hendrick VAN HESSENHOOY became Henry ESSINHIGH. Please post to the list if you discover any personal connections here. To the list -- Here is Part 4 of the surname extractions from the BT's of St. Peter, Canterbury, for dates 1746-1760. This was a parish in which many of the Protestant refugees settled. These records are on LDS film # 1736628. Please refer to comments in my three earlier posts for info re: what BT's were and importance of verifying this info by your own personal research. Also, please note that I am not saying that all the names below definitely belonged to refugee families -- I am merely saying that it's possible. Again, it needs to be verified. If you find a connection to any of this information, I hope you will post to share. Hello, list -- On 31 Aug, Clive <Clive.Bates@btinternet.com> posted about several surnames he is interested in. Among them were TEVELIN (& variants), OLIVE and BLANCHARD. If these names sounded a bit familiar to some of you, it's because I've posted a bit about them myself in the past. It turns out that Clive and I, who have been in contact with each other for only a couple of months, are (very very) distant cousins. I'm hoping the following information, some of which is pre-1600, will send Clive "over the moon" by providing connections to his own TEVELIN family. It might also be of interest to a couple of other TEVELIN researchers who've just joined our list. The following extracts are from the records of the Walloon Church at Canterbury. These are in Volume 5 of the Quarto series (pub. Huguenot Soc. of Ldn), and are also on LDS films & 0086956 & 0086957. I'm sorry that the information is incomplete -- I did this research in the summer of 1999, under tight time constraints, and the film was returned to Salt Lake before I could finish. Because I was in a rush, I also picked the shorter entries to transcribe, leaving the longer more detailed ones for "another time". Still, quite a few other names and details are mentioned so maybe someone else on the list will find an unexpected connection or clue. At the end of this post, I've listed the page references for extracts I did not get a chance to do. Enjoy it. Hello Everyone, I am new to this list, and have been trying to find my past generations, the name I am looking for are the DeFraines, some I found in Buckinghamshire, and some moved to London,I would love to move on to finding them, as I have now come to a brick wall,if anyone can help or to let me know where the name originated from I would love to hear from you. Thanks in advance Ron Chapman New Zealand
Hi, I have been researching my Kent Ancestors for some time and found that Henry KIPPS married Hester or Esther Dernocour on 9 June 1772 at St Alphage's Canterbury. Esther was descended from Germain, Jermain, or Jarman Dernocour of Lille and Rachel Pron. I, particularly, would like to find the marriage of Esther's parents, Henry DERNOCOUR and Elizabeth (Surname unknown).Esther was their eldest child baptised in 1745. Briefly, I am interested in: CLARIS DERNOCOUR, DERNACOUR, DERNAUCOURT, DE RENAUCOURT GALMAR Le KEUX PRON I have the Huguenot Society's transcription of the registers of the Walloon or Strangers' Church from Canterbury Cathedral on microfiche. I am able to do look ups but not blanket searches. Regards PG Martin
I have a Denis or Daniel LAMBERT who d. 1691 in France. He was married to Francoise BRINQUEMAN(Frances Brinkman). They had a child after his death named Frances Lambert b 1692 supposedly in France who came to America with a group of Hugenots in the later 1690s to the Carolina Colony. I would appreciate any information on this family. Audrey >

I do know that the "word" terpenning, in Dutch, refers to "money used for travel, food or journey". This was passed on to me from a source in Holland. Although it is considered an archaic word, it is used in reference to evening events in Holland, i.e., special dinner. Ironically the "word" ter penning has been translated (England) to mean "son-of-a-scribe". This came from several travelers from England that I met during my military career. I did attempt to associate the surname with PENNING but found no link. So far the only plausible explanation is the surname TERPENNING was originally just a word, not a name, that was picked up as a nickname and the individual that was in the BRINK family used this nickname as the surname for his family. I believe that if this surname is a derivitive of another surname, then the name would appear in the family with the original surname. For instance, my ancestors spelled the surname TEERPENNING, then it changed to TERPENNING and eventually TERPENING.. All of these changes were evident in each new generation. Again, I thank you for your response. Perhaps another lead will surface that will provide a possible answer to the true origin of the TEERPENNING (and variation) surname. Thank You. Hi, listers -- Here we go with Part 2 of the surname extracts from the BT's (Bishop's Transcripts) of St. Peter, Canterbury, covering dates 1701-1725. As I mentioned in my post yesterday, this was one of the Canterbury parishes where many refugees settled. If any names here are of interest or connect to your family lines, I hope you will post to the list to share info. Also, as always, I caution researchers to please check/verify the original records themselves -- do not rely on these extracts alone for information. Enjoy! Jan and Robin, This is so exciting to see a bit of a trail that I may be able to follow. I am so so very grateful for your responses to my search for the elusive Eudaley. Your contributions are invaluable. I can hardly wait to find more. Robin, is there a Youdale castle? Also, I am wondering if you could recommend a researcher that would go through The burial registers of Christchurch for me? What other records would you recommend that I check? Kindest regards, Priscilla Poupore
In a message dated 8/27/00 11:27:48 AM Eastern Daylight Time, sumo@bellatlantic.net writes: << The name d'AILLY was usually the name of the Catholic branch of the family while those of the Huguenot branch usually used DALLY. >> Possibly there is yet another spelling to add to the Huguenot branch. I came across the following in Huguenot Ancestry (Noel Currer-Briggs & Royston Gambier's book): "The bishop of London in 1682 sent the Rev. PIERRE DAILLE to minister to the French Protestants in the New World. His mission was so successful that it earned him the name of the 'Apostle of the Huguenots'." I don't know if this helps someone or not, but it seemed worth mentioning. Regards, Jan Zwarick
I have many EUDES in my family tree including the James mentioned by Jan Zwarick in the catalogue of the Huguenot exhibition 1985. I don't have the exact text details mentioned in the catalogue although I do have the entry from the Register of the French Hospital and am very grateful for Jan's effort to publish it. The EUDE (or EUDES or HEUDE) family came to England from Cerisy La Salle near Coutances in Basse Normandie via the Channel Islands about 1685 and settled in Spitalfields where they were weavers. The James mentioned above was the great great grandson of the Jacques Eude who came from Normandy. I am always grateful for any new info but I'm afraid that I have found no links to the Eudally name or similar. It occurs to me that Eudale may well now be changed to Youdale which is a name known in England - the present headmaster of The Kings School at Ely is called Richard Youdale. I was checking the burial registers of Christchurch Spitalfield * St Dunstan Stepney on microfilm at Cambridge FHS and am fairly certain I saw a few Eudales or similar names. They won't be on the IGI as they don't include burials. Anyone with any further info about my EUDE name please let meknow - grateful thanks Robin Moore, Ely, Cambridgeshire, UK Researching: SULLY / EUDE / HEUDE / HIGGS / STEEL / WHITE / MOORE (East London) and LAMING (S/E London) Robin.Moore@tesco.net
Pat asked where she could start searching for EUDE and similar names. I came across a Communion Certificate of JAMES EUDE (London 1709) in The Quiet Conquest (The catalogue for the Huguenot Exhibition at the Museum of London in 1985). The catalogue reference states: "This certificate was presented by JAMES EUDE's great grandson, also James, with his petition for admission to the French Protestant Hospital on 30th March, 1858, as evidence of his Huguenot origins. The original JAMES EUDE is described as of the parish of Stepney, and the document, signed by SAMUEL BESCOMBES, minister of the French Church, Threadneedle Street, certifies that James Eude received communion on 1st May, 1709 at the French church called 'The Hospital', an annexe of the Threadneedle Street Church. The document also bears a testimony from FRANCIS MARTEL, weaver, and JAMES MARTEL, cooper, both of the parish of Stepney." I don't know if this will hold any clues, but I thought it might be worth trying. Regards, Jan Zwarick
Hi to everyone on the list -- Here are some surnames which I extracted recently from the BT's (Bishop's Transcripts) of the parish of St. Peter's in Canterbury, Kent, ENG. This was one of the Canterbury churches which was heavily attended by the refugees. I'm hoping this will be helpful to someone out there. These records are on LDS film # 1736628. I began the extracts with year 1685/6 -- simply because that's where the handwriting became readable to me -- and have ended with 1700 in this post. Therefore, this is Part 1 -- further surnames for dates later than 1700 will follow over the next little while. Notice that some of the surnames are the same ones that popped up in the extracts I posted previously from the Canterbury parishes of St. George and St. Margaret. All the cautions and comments I mentioned in my posts for these parishes also apply here -- ie. please verify original records to check my accuracy (this is not a primary source). Also, I am not *absolutely certain* that all these names were Huguenot -- I merely made guesses and extracted the *possibles*. Also, there were undoubtably some that I've missed altogether -- another reason to check the records yourselves. I've left all the spelling just as I found it (and bear in mind that the handwriting was sometimes very hard to decipher) but have also sometimes speculated on what the original spelling might have been. Notice that burials far outnumber either marriages or baptisms. Notice also the very frequent occurence of male names such as Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Peter, and to a lesser extent: Philip & Samuel. It's been my experience that these names are not at all common in Kent parishes which did not have refugee settlement. If anyone has a connection to any of the following names, I hope they will post about it. Andrea, Thank you so very much for the EUDAILY lookups in Livre des Tesmoignages: Threadneedle Street Church. It is a new thread to unwind perhaps. Where would I start tracing the Eudes your found? There is a John Eudele on the list of Revolutionary Soldiers and I kind of hoped he was mine but no request from the government office have turned up anything but the name is skimming toward close???? At least when one is desperate for a rellie, it is close.. I sure do appreciate the leads!! Kind regards, Priscilla
In reponse to Shirley's request of Aug. 24th for information about Huguenots in Ireland, I submit the following: My DE AZELEY ancestors were French Huguenots who came to NIRL. Charles >>DE AZELEY's son, also Charles DE AZELEY, had a daughter Jane, who >>married James IRVINE in Fermanagh Co., NIRL. Jane and James had at >>least one daughter, Alice, who is my great-grandmother. >>I don't know of, or if there were, any DE AZELEYs previous to Jane's >>grandfather, Charles, who were in Fermanagh. >>At some point Alice Irvine (and her family? don't know) came to Canada. >>She married James Bradley in Perth Co., Ontario, Canada in 1857. >>Family tradition says that the name DE AZELEY died out in Ireland in the >>first half of the 20th century. >>Except for the Canadian vital statistics, none of the above information >>has been verified by certificates, etc. - it's all family tradition, >>written by my grandfather. >>Good luck with your "Assimilation" essay. >>Cheers! >>Betty Nelson (in sunny Delta, BC, Canada) >
I have ancestors in the Cambridge area with various spellings of this name including Anger, Angier & Aungier. I am told that this may be connected withe immigrants to the Thorney area in the 16th Century, Has anyone resarched this name in the area? Hi listers My mother's name was SOALL and I have traced this name back to a marriage at St Leonards Shoreditch London in 1775. There are references to a SOUALL and a SOEL in the Threadneedle Street church and to SOALL and SOAL in the Canterbury registers. Does anyone know if this name has been researched or has occured in any other areas. Thanks David ____________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I have just joined this excellent mailing list and so I am going to stop lurking and put out a general help call along all family lines to find others to share detail with. My line of descent from Jean TEVELEIN (b.1618, Guemps) who married in abt 1640 Marie BEUNE (b abt 1622,Guemps)is: : Isaac TEVELEIN (b 1654, Guines) + Elizabeth DASSELAR, (b unknown) m 1682, Guines, Fra Isaac TEVELEIN (b 1683, Guines) + Elizabeth OLIVE (b.1682, Guemps), m 1706, Canterbury, UK Issac TEVELIN (b 1707, Canterbury) + Ann PICARD (b. 1711, Canterbury), m 1734, Canterbury Joseph TEVELIN (b 1750 Canterbury) + Mary BRICE (b. 1750, Canterbury), m 1773, Canterbury Isabella TEVELIN (b.1791, Canterbury) + John GIBBENS (b 1792, Thanet Street), m 1825, Canterbury) Frederick GIBBENS (b 1836, Thanet Street) + Elizabeth HOPPER (b. 1833) m 1861 Emma GIBBENS (b.1866, Elham) + David Edward FISHER (b 1866) Irene Hilda FISHER (b 1909, Lyminge) + Jack BATES (b 1906 Dover) m Lyminge 1931. Clive BATES (b 1933, Lyminge) 1. I am trying to trace the associated family lines of BEUNE, DASSELAR, BLANCHAR(D), OLIVE, PICARD, BRICE, GIBBENS, GIBBONS, HOPPER and FISHER and would be very grateful for any help. 2. There are at least ten various spellings of Tevelain, Thevelin, Tiblain, Teblain, Tevlin and I am interested to know of any evidence of a Huguenot connection in these families. 3. I would be over the moon to hear of any pre-1600 ancestors ! 4 Links with FISHER prior to 1866 and with BATES prior to 1900 would also be very welcome.
