Oh, dear -- we've all gone so very very quiet again. Enjoying all those Olympic events, everyone <g>? Here are the results of the GRD 2000 lookup requested by Carol <markilli@inreach.com> on 19 Sept. She wants to see if anyone besides herself is listed in there, researching the names LE PLA, MARQUILLIER/MARQUILLE [MARKILLIE], TREFFETT/TREFET and FOVARGUE/FAVERGUE. Carol, I may have misunderstood you but I got the impression that you had submitted all above surnames to the 2000 GRD yourself. Which puzzled me a bit because I thought a copy of the GRD was part of the deal, when someone did that (but maybe it's optional). Anyway, I hope I DID misunderstand because you are not listed anywhere in there that I can see. For surnames LE PLA and MARQUILLIER, MARQUILLE and MARKILLIE, there are no listings at all. I even looked for LEPLA and PLA to make sure. There are also no listings for TREFFETT and TREFET spellings, but there is the following -- 1) researching TREFFET and TRIFFET, pre-1850, Durham, ENG -- Sue & Mel Bailey of St. Albans, Hertfordshire, ENG. E-mail is suemelba.stalbans@virgin.net. 2) researching TREFFTIT, c1720 Marshchapel, Lincolnshire -- Jean Ostrowski who lives just a few hours' drive south of me in the city of Victoria, BC, CAN. Her e-mail is jeao@islandnet.com. 3) researching TRIFFETT in all time periods, worldwide (a One Name Study) --Grant Andre Triffett, PO Box 573, Healesville, Victoria 3777, AUS. No e-mail!! (Incroyable!) 4) researching TRIFFITT -- a few listings for this one, with research locations ranging from Australia to England (Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Durham). Let me know if any are of interest. No listing found for FAVERGUE but researching the FOVARGUE spelling, 1700+ in Cambridgeshire and and Northumberland, ENG is John Pollock, 221 Hemdean Road, Caversham, Berkshire RG4 7QX, ENG. No e-mail but his fax number is (0118) 947 2750. Hope at least some of the above is of interest. Wishing you luck, Andrea
Andrea: Would you look up MADOU and MADON in France & Belgium for me. Thank you. Tom Dally
Hi, listers -- Here are some GRD results for a look up requested by Bonnie <bonnielady@mindspring.com on 17 Sept for surnames LINVILLE, LANGWELL, LONGVILLE, LANWEUIL and TAIT in Northern Ireland, late 1600's-early 1700's. No listings found for LONGVILLE, LINVILLE, LANGWELL or LANWEIL. There are a lot of listings for TAIT but most of them are for Scotland. The 1999 edition has two Irish listings, though -- one is for pre-1900 County Down and the other is for 1800-1903, Colerine, Londonderry. Both are completely the wrong time period but I can give details if you contact me off-list. I would suggest checking the section for Ireland on the GENUKI website to see if there are any surname lists there. GENUKI is Genealogy for United Kingdom and Ireland and the URL is http://www.genuki.org.uk. Andrea
Here is another look-up, everyone, this time for James <JamesCHimes@aol.com> who made his request on 17 Sept for surnames MILLARD, MAILLARD, MILLIARD. His area of interest is southern France, then Nova Scotia, CAN, pre-1875. There are no listings in the 2000 GRD for the MAILLARD spelling. However, there is one person with a listing for both MAILLARDET and MAILLARDOTT, in ENG & FRA, all time periods. This rings a bell with me. I may have sent it to James already (from same listing in 1999 GRD). If not, please let me know off-list and I will send details. The 1999 GRD also includes a listing for MAILLAUD, 1700+ in Franche-Comte, FRA. For MILLIARD, there are no listings. However, for MILLARD there are twenty listings for various locations (eg. Australia, English counties of Bedfordshire, Gloucestershire, Hertfordshire, Lancashire, Middlesex, Northumberland, Somerset, Surrey, Sussex, Staffordshire, Wiltshire, also Counties Mayo and Sligo in Ireland). No Canadian locations are mentioned. Please contact me off-list if you are interested in any of these locations. For further info about Huguenots who settled in Nova Scotia, there is a nicely-done personal web page done by a person who is specifically interested in this topic. As it says on the site, "many Nova Scotians and their descendants are of.....French Huguenot lineage", most of them apparently originating from the area of Montbéliard in northern France near the German border. The home page URL for this website is http://www.intergate.bc.ca/personal/dconrad/index.htm. It includes a specific section on Huguenots at http://www.intergate.bc.ca/personal/dconrad/huguenot.htm where there are some related links to other Huguenot information. There is also a surname list which includes MAILLARD. A quotation on the web site caught my eye as well because I think is particularly apt regarding our Huguenot ancestors (or any ancestors who faced adversity and/or persecution). It's a line from a song sung by The Rankin Family (a Canadian group from Atlantic Canada, for those who don't know) and it says "We rise again in the faces of our children." Isn't that fitting? "We rise again....." The one (small) frustrating thing for me about the site, though, is that I couldn't find this person's own name anywhere on it! He refers to himself as "me" or "I" but I could not find a sentence which said "My name is.....". Maybe I just wasn't looking properly. Anyway, I think his name is D. Conrad (which fits with the "dconrad" in the URL) but maybe I'm wrong. And while we are on the subject of Huguenots who settled in Canada, here is another URL kindly provided by Gary in a post to the list on 22 Aug. It's Liste provisoire des huguenots en Nouvelle-France, ie. Huguenots going from France to Canada, 1670+. The URL is http://pages.infinit.net/barbeaum/listem.htm. Hope this helps James and also others. Andrea .

Earlier today (24 Sept), Harry <Amlingpecans@aol.com> asked if there is an association in Germany which began with French Huguenots who moved to Brandenburg province, GER. I don't know the answer to his question but maybe the German Huguenot Society can help with this info. As of January of this year, the Society did not have e-mail but here is the mailing address, as well as phone/fax numbers. There is apparently a staff member there who can answer inquiries in English. It's the German Huguenot Society: Deutsche Hugenotten-Gesellschaft e.V., Hafenplatz 9, D-34385 Bad Karlshafen, GER (Tel +49 5672 1433, Fax +49 5672 926072). For those of you who are researching in Germany, there is also the German Huguenot Museum of Bad Karlshafen (Deutsches Hugenottenmuseum in Bad Karlshafen) at the same address as above. Their website is at the following URL: http://www.hessennet.de/oberweser/Freizeit/Sehenswuerdigkeiten/Hugenotten/ht m The German Huguenot Society established the Museum sometime after WW II in Bad Karlshafen (formerly a Huguenot centre), because access to Huguenot records in Berlin was impossible, due to Allied occupation/division as well as war-related destruction of that ciity. If anyone else knows of additional sources for German research, please post the info to the list. Andrea
Hello, my first letter is this one. Is there an association in germany that had its beginn with the french hugenots that moved to the brandenburg province of germany ? Harry.

The following is an interesting site for those who search for Huguenot ancestry: http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/news/articles/236.asp

Listers -- on 16 Sept, Joan <joan.mayhew@zfree.co.nz> requested a look-up for surname RHONE in the 2000 GRD. Glad to oblige. There is one person listed, researching this surname in two locations and time periods, ie. c1896 Birmingham, Warwickshire, ENG and in all time periods, County Down, IRL. Her name is Jackie Tanner and she lives in Wales. Her e-mail address is jackie@vayona.freeserve.co.uk. I notice she's also listed in the 1999 GRD (the only RHONE researcher). Good luck! Andrea
Since 1980 I have researched the LUCADOU family in Europe and America. The earliest ancestro was Pierre Antoine LUCADOU of Castres in Lanquedoc, France. His wife was a DE MALABRON. The two sons Pierre Antoine born in Castres in 1671 and Humbert who was part of the LUCADOUs of Geneva, Switzerland and later went to Holland. By his second wife Marthe ORET, he had a son Jaques LUCADOU of Castres who became a Burgess of Geneva, Switzerland. He married Judith NAVILLE of Geneva in 1729. The line which went to England were the children of Paul Francois von LUCADOU who was born on 27 April 1783 who married Louise JOHANNOT. Another John Daniel LUCADOU was naturalized by an act of Parliament in 1759. If you have membership with Ancestry.com, you can trace English descendants and records they might have in England. I actually found 103 references to the LUCADOU family including their business addresses and even play tickets. I would like Andrea to please search any records she might have for mention of any LUCADOU in the English records. The Huguenot Society of London gave us details about the family and a pedigree chart. The churches mentioned in the IGI records for the family included Shoreditch, St. Leonards, All Hallows, St. Martin in the Fields, and St. Benet Paul's Wharf. If anyone knows of these churches and their records or any LUCADOU connections, please contact me or share it with our Huguenot group. I also want to thank Andrea for letting the Huguenot group know about the Spanish connection. We had a tradition of being Spanish, and the explanation about the Walloons being under Spanish control in the Netherlands (now Belgium) cleared up a mystery we had wondered about for years. In a book titled "Les Refugies of Pays Castral" they discuss the family in an alphabetical listing. These are Walloon records and they definitely were Protestants because in 1682 Pierre LUCADOU, with several of his friends, were accused of sacrilege and condemned by non-appearance (in court) to be burned alive. Instead he went to Holland and was received in "citizenship" at Amsterdam the lst of December 1685. He married in the city and died there in 1728. In later notes, several of the LUCADOU family were persecuted. A Lady LUCADOU of Castres was shut up in a convent about 1699 in Chinon. A Jeanne-Rose LUCADOU published the Wilderness bans of marriage in 1749 and was put in prison. Jean-Louis LUCADOU, merchant druggist of Castres, was prosecuted for baptism (non-Catholic) and a Marthe LUCADOU was imprisoned at Castres for joining an assembly (Protestant church service) the 23rd September 1754 but was recognized as innocent and liberated the 15th of October. My ancestor Jean LUCADOU and his wife came to Manakintowne, VA in 1700. The Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia is celebrating the 300th anniversary of the group coming to America on Saturday, October 21. They will be touring the library, the old church, and at 7 p.m. having a banquet at the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond, Virginia. As an author of 3 histories on the LUCADOU, LOOKADOO, LUCKADO and LUCADO families (and possibly the 4th book by then) , I have been invited to participate in the festivities. I thought others with Manakin roots might be interested in knowing about this upcoming event. Carolyn LUCADO GRIFFIN (CLGriffinY@aol.com)
Fellow listers -- Here are the results of a GRD look-up requested from Hugh <HDELMAR@aol.com> on 16 Sept for surnames SIX, SY, SAYE, SAEY, SOY in French Flanders in the 1660s. Sorry but there were no listings found for any of the surname spellings mentioned. However, there were some listings for SAY and SEE, and I'm including them here even though the locations are not French Flanders, just in case they are of interest. One person is researching SAY in various locations and times in England, as follows: a) George SAY 1730-50 in Ubley, Somerset, ENG b) all time periods, Somerset & Wiltshire, ENG c) James SAY 1780-1820 in Melksham, Wiltshire and d) Alfred Frderick SAY 1827 in Melksham, Wiltshire. The researcher is Brian SAY, living in NZ. His e-mail address is briansay@clear.net.nz. There is a phone and fax number for him as well which I can supply if needed. Another person is researching SEE in two very different locations and time periods: a) 1849+ Hinton, NSW, Australia and b) pre-1734 Woodhurst, Huntingdonshire, ENG. She is Mrs. V. Rose, 12 Wells Street, Adamstown, NSW 2289, AUS. Sometime during the next week, I will be posting surname extracts from parish of All Saints in Canterbury. There were a few SIX surnames found there (late1600's-early 1700's), so stay tuned. Andrea

On 16 Sept, Pamela <pgmartin@breathemail.net> requested a look-up in the 2000 GRD for the following surnames and locations: * DERNOCOUR (of Lille, FRA & Canterbury, Kent, pre-1772) * COLTON (of London, Shoreditch and Bethnal Green, or Kent pre-1870) * KIPPS (of Chatham, Deal, Sandwich & Thanet in Kent, pre-1804) Sorry, but there was no listing for DERNOCOUR. Have you searched the IGI for this name, trying both British Isles and France locations? Remember that all the Huguenot/Walloon church records published by the Hug. Soc. of London are on the IGI. There are several COLTON listings but none are in the London areas mentioned or in Kent. The locations in the GRD are -- Leicestershire, Surrey and Yorkshire. I can send details if you're intrested. Just contact me off-list. There was one listing for KIPPS, for all time periods, in Greenwich, Kent. The researcher is Tim Roberts, 67 Falmouth Road, Chelmsford, Essex CM1 6JA. He has no e-mail listed. I also had a look in the 1999 GRD but the only listing I found which I think would be of interest is another one for KIPPs, in 1750-1850 Chatham, Kent. The researcher is Mr. B. Bennett, 200 Auburn Road, Hawthorn, Victoria 3122, AUS. Another one with no e-mail. Hope this is helpful to you and perhaps others. Andrea
The ancient Gaelic name UA GALAIGH (pronounced "o Dhaulee") signifies degree of relationship to the Dalach "grandson of ...". Edmund Emmet O'Daly, History of the O'Daly, 1937, p. 409 states that in the 9th century in the reign of Charles the Bald of Burgundy, some of the O'DALAIGH's settled in France. Count DALLE entertained the Irish Brigade troopers after the Italian campaign in 1708. Reference to Henrietta DeLaval DALLY in Portarlington, 1772, p.111 Also Abel DALLY, town major, Galway, 1735; Thomas DALLY, Dublin; John DALLY, Dublin "clothier". 1615 Teige O'DALLY given a grant of Killimbre in Galway Co. 30 Nov (p.157) Pp 409- "O'DALAIGH Descendants in France" and Pp 427- "Historical Records of the O'DALAIGHS of America" (Colonial America) spelled DAILEY, DAILIE, DALEY, DALLY, DAYLEY, DAWLEY. Hello to everyone -- In her post today (21 Sept), new subscriber Michele <mthomas@mail.win.org> asked why we discuss Huguenots as well as Walloons on this list. Michele, you're correct in saying that Huguenots were Protestants and you're also correct in saying that Walloons -- and it's present-day Walloons in Belgium, I presume you mean -- are mainly Catholic. We have had several previous posts to the list on this topic, because it sometimes causes confusion. The most recent one was on 13 Aug with subject line: Walloons: modern vs historical. There was also a previous one on 13 April and an even earlier one on 7 Feb with subject line: Walloons: who were they? All of these posts would be accessible in the list archives. In discussions on this list, Walloons are viewed in a historical perspective of the 1500-1600's. Like the Huguenots (with which they are often confused and/or combined), they were Protestants who were persecuted for their beliefs, fleeing their homelands to other parts of Europe or to the UK, Ireland and/or North America. Here is what Mr. Stephen Massil -- the Librarian at the Huguenot Library (of the Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland) in London -- has to say on this subject: "....The Walloons were amongst the earliest and initially dominant group of refugees.....In terms of the Reformation and the persecution of Protestants, the Walloons were the French-speaking Protestants of the Low Countries (Netherlands) under Spanish control in the 16th and 17th centuries along with the Protestant Flemings (i.e. Dutch people)......With the Edict of Nantes in 1598......(there were) gradually increasing numbers of refugees, now predominantly Huguenots, leaving France (rather than the Low Countries since from there they could migrate to 'free' Holland) during the 17th century culminating at the period of the Revocation of the Edict. In practical terms, the Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland makes no distinction between Walloons and Huguenots and our records do not distinguish them and nor should you in your developments." Does this clear things up? Hope so! Andrea
