    1. [HWE] Submitting US/CAN Huguenot names
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hello -- this message is directed specifically at those of you who have Huguenot ancestors who have been documented in US or Canadian locations but who have *no information* which traces them back to European, UK or Irish locations. I believe I have thought of a way to include the names of these ancestors on our website surnames list (see my three previous posts on this subject today). If your research falls into the category I've mentioned, please contact me BUT ***off list please***! Then we'll see if we can work out a solution. Thanks. Andrea

    1. [HWE] H-W-E Surnames List for Website
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Listers -- I am hard at work on the list website right now (I know....it's been a long time and I've said this before.....keep your fingers crossed!). Part of this website will include surnames submitted by those of you on the list. Some of you have done this already. I will be posting this list separately. It has become so long now that I've divided it into two parts -- surnames A-G and H-Z. If you would like to add surnames to it or make additions, changes or corrections to ones already there, now's the time to do it. So, I am asking that anyone wanting to submit surnames or changes please post them to the list anytime now. They should *not* be sent to me privately. BUT......to make my job much much easier, I ask/beg/plead for the following: 1) Subject line of your post should indicate you are submitting surnames for the website surnames list, eg. write your surnames, then something like Website Surnames List. 2) Submit surnames *only in the format shown* in the two A-G & H-Z surnames posts. That is: SURNAME in capitals, followed by date & location > date & location, etc. 3) I am eliminating first names (to make things simpler), so please do not include them. 4) Include the country in your locations (see accepted abbreviations in the surname posts). 5) If you submit more than one surname, please list them *in alphabetical order* in your post, and, of course, in the correct format. 5) Submissions *must* mention at least one European, UK or Irish location, ie. none with US locations *only* (this fits in with our geographical focus). If mentioning US locations, please include states *only*, not towns/cities or counties (again, this is to simplify). More info on the website to come. I will be asking for your advice. Andrea

    1. [HWE] Ooops, wrong Queen!
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Listers -- In my previous post re: Malt-house Chapel, I seem to have been mixed up as to who was Queen of England in 1709. (Thanks to Betty for pointing this out!) The Queen at the time was not, of course, Queen Elizabeth I who had died over 100 years before (1603). It was Queen Anne (born 1665), the second daughter of James II, and she reigned only from 1702 to 1714. She was a devout Protestant and the last of the Stuart line. My apologies and thank you once again to Betty, an alert subscriber, for catching the mistake. Andrea

    1. [HWE] Malthouse Chapel > Petitions, Sept 1709
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Listers -- Here are the contents of two of the pages (petitions) from the records of the Malthouse Chapel in Canterbury (ENG), both dated September 1709. I find this fascinating stuff and hope others feel the same. If anyone finds ancestors attending this Chapel, copies of these pages would be a wonderful addition to the family history. As a reminder and for those subscribers who've recently joined us, this Chapel was established after disagreements with the main Walloon Church in Canterbury. This topic was discussed in several posts at the end of September and the beginning of this month. They can be viewed in the list archives. The first petition (below) is in English and the second (after the first) is in French. Note that most of the same people signed both of them. Obviously, they were prominent members of that group, and other pages in these records show that some were later chosen as elders. All spelling and punctuation has been left "as is". Here is the first page. It's a request for a grant establish a new French church in Canterbury. The Queen (ie. Elizabeth I) is mentioned but it seems to be directed to an intermediary (the Archibishop of Canterbury?) or possibly someone in her court, who is unnamed but addressed as "My Lord" or "your Grace". La Requeste Suivante presentee a My Lord dans le mois de Septemb. 1709. May it please your Grace, As it hath Graciously pleased her Majesty our Sovereign of Great Brittain, france & Ireland, Queen, Defender of ye faith, With The Lords Spirituall and Temporall assembled in Parliament to have done us ye Honour to acknowledge us for her own Subjects, and To lett us enjoy the same Priviledges as her other Naturall Born Subjects of Greatt Brittain by an act passed in Parliament ye Seventh year of her Majesty's Reign, Intitled, an act for naturalising all foreign Protestants, out of a Due Consideration of those great advantages granted to us, and not to be Guilty of ye greatest Ingratitude, Wee here underneath Written have resolved for a token of our acknowledgement (hoping it will be acceptable to her Majesty) to Conform ourselves as Well to ye Customs, manners and Rules of this Kingdom, as to ye Religion established by ye Laws of this Realm, & Wherefore Wee most humbly beseech your Grace to be pleased to grant us a Licence to make a french Church according to ye Rites of ye Church of England for this City of Canterbury, ye place of our abode and wch. is under ye Jurisdiction of your Diocess, Wee hope, My lord youl. be pleased to grant us this favour; In order that Wee being so united and protected May Continue to pray the Almighty that he will be pleased to bless more and more her Majesty our most Gracious Sovereign, and your Grace with ye Choycest of his Blessing, being Your most humble and most obedient servants, My Lord. It was signed by Jean DE CLEVE, Abraham DE LA NEUVEMAISON, Jean DE LON, Gabriel PAIN, Paschal LARDEAU, and By above Six and thirty Hands more. A true Copy of ye Original. At the bottom left corner were the initials P.L., presumably those of Pierre LE SUEUR who became minister of the Malthouse Chapel a few years later. Here is the second page. I believe it's directed to the ministers and elders of the Church of the Savoy in London, although they aren't mentioned until the very end. Please correct me on any of this if I'm wrong here but I think they are asking, among others things, for advice ("Vos bons et sages advis"), for help in their request to establish a new church ("aussy tous les secours qui sont en Vostre pouvoir pour nous faire obtenir..... ", etc.) and for help in choosing a Minister ("ayder a trouver un Ministre, qui soit honneste homme....", etc.) Hi all, Thanks to Roy for confirming what is in the Leiden collection. At 10:31 AM 10/25/00 -0700, Andrea Vogel wrote: snip >1) Leiden Collection: Huguenots in the Netherlands, France, Germany, >etc.,1500 -1828. Originals at the Walloon Library in Leiden. Looking at the list that tells which names are on which film, I see "de la Croix" among the D's, and "le Cleijnet" and "LeJeune" among the L's. Yet I also see "de la Rocca" among the L's, "de Hie" among the H's, "delaBassecourt" amont the L's, etc. Is there any rule for this collection for names with de, la, de la, du, etc. in front? I am interested in de la Montagne. Which should I try first: the film containing "de la" the D's, the one containing "lamo" in the L's, or Montagne in the M's? Thanks, Howard hswain@ix.netcom.com

    1. [HWE] SURNAMES (DA-DEJ) > Threadneedle St. Church tesmoignages
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Listers -- here is another installment of the surnames listed in the records of the Threadneedle St. Church tésmoignages, surnames DA to DEJ this time. As you may remember from previous posts, these records are in Volume 21 of the Quarto series published by the Hug. Soc. of London -- Livre des Tésmoignages de l'Église de Threadneedle Street, 1669-1789 -- and are also on LDS film # 0962137. Even if your surnames don't begin with a D, it's a good idea to check through the ones starting with this letter. For example, in this batch, there may be a DE added to particular surnames which can also be found listed under other letters, without the DE in front of them (as in DE CARPENTIER or DE FONTAINE). Also, some surnames beginning with a vowel may have a D or D' added at the beginning (eg. AURIOL & DAURIOL). Note that the letter V and U are sometimes used interchangeably (so, for example, DAVID is also listed as DAUID.) In fact, I would recommend checking the entire list because there are often so many variants of one surname. Even if you find "your" surname(s) in these records, it does not prove that your own surname(s) is/are Huguenot in origin. You must prove the link between your family and the persons who are specifically mentioned in these records. 3. Dear Listers, I was recently at the Leiden Municipal Archives, home of the "Leiden Collection." There is tons of information there. Lots of the original documents at those archives have been meticulously indexed on card files and in books. I suppose the 199 reels of LDS film have most, if not all, of those indexes (but not the original records themselves). I really thought the indexes for the city death records were interesting. Those indexes are in books, not on cards. I suppose the LDS filmed them, but I don't know. They are also very generous with letting people use the original records. I was able to look through the 1663 gravebook for the Pieterskerk (Pieters Church). It's in practically mint condition. I'm not sure how they keep the records in such great shape. Anyway, I posted some information about the Leiden Municipal Archives and the results of my research (on Bodines) at my Bodine site. The address, telephone, and email addresses are there. I also have pictures of the Pieterskerk (where the pilgrims once worshipped) and Hooglandskerk (churches) in Leiden. If you're interested, take a look at the following url: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~bodine/leiden00.htm Best regards, Dave Bodine -- Dave@MediterraneanAccents.com Roy Day wrote: > Howard is quite right in stating that the Leiden Collection contains wide > ranging information. 3. Howard is quite right in stating that the Leiden Collection contains wide ranging information. The original is described as a card index of Huguenots in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany and elsewhere. The fact that it takes 199 reels of LDS film would indicate that it is a very large collection. 1. [HWE] Musty Dusty HugWalls Info Challenge
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Fellow listers -- Here's a challenge to you all. It was inspired by the post from John <johntev@ozemail.com.au> on 23 Oct with subject line: Some Huguenot Anecdotes. As you may remember, John (a self-confessed "list fringe dweller") found some very interesting Huguenot tidbits at his local library during their recent clean-up. Then he decided to pass this info on to the list because he thought it would be of interest. This info had nothing to do with his own research or family lines. Soooo......I've decided to challenge you, one and all, in what I've called the Musty Dusty HugsWalls Info Challenge. I hope fellow lister, Julia, doesn't mind that I've borrowed the "HugWalls" from her post on 3 Oct. Here's the challenge. Can you find and post an interesting bit of info -- it needn't be long or detailed -- re: Huguenots and/or Walloons and share it with the rest of us? Before we begin, please note -- 1) The info must be relevent to Huguenots and/or Walloons in continental Europe, and/or the UK and/or Ireland. I'm sure many of you out there have U.S. info but this would be inappropriate on this list. See previous posts on this topic in list archives, keywords: geographical focus. If you find that you have info only for U.S. locations, then wouldn't this be a great time to make a foray into areas beyond U.S. borders? It's impossible to research European ancestors without doing this. 2) When passing on info from a published source, please be aware of copyright. You can quote some of the contents in their entirety and also paraphrase other sections in your own words. But to quote all or almost all, word-for-word, would be a copyright violation. If you are passing on a post from another list, be aware that copyright also applies here. You must get the author's permission to do so. 3) Think carefully about your subject line before sending your post. Ready? Set? Go!! Search your book shelves! Visit your local library or archives! Dust off that trunk in the attic! Sift through your accumulation of papers! See if your local FHC holds any information! Be alert for book sales! Trawl through the archives of other lists! Haunt used book stores! Investigate the far reaches of the Net! Ask friends for sources! Pounce on piles of musty papers at garage sales/boot sales! Any other sources you can think of!? Remember, this does not necessarily have to be about your own family research. Don't forget to tell us where you found the information. There is no time limit to this Challenge so you can send in posts on this topic whenever you find something interesting, starting now and at any time into the future. (But don't wait too long <g>. Seize the day!). Eagerly awaiting reponses to this Challenge, Andrea

    1. [HWE] Leiden & Mirandolle Collections
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hello -- I'd like to add some comments to info re: the Leiden collection, mentioned by Howard < hswain@ix.netcom.com > (24 Oct) and by Roy <royday@dial.pipex.com > (22 Oct and today, 25 Oct) . This is a vast amount of info, which includes several countries, as pointed out by Roy. The LDS has actually filmed two collections of card indexes, but I'm not sure of the difference between the two. Perhaps another lister can let us know about this. 1) Leiden Collection: Huguenots in the Netherlands, France, Germany, etc.,1500 -1828. Originals at the Walloon Library in Leiden. They are on films arranged alphabetically according to surnames and numbered from 0199755 (AB-ALE) to 0199953 (WITA-Z). 2) Mirandolle Collection: Huguenots in the Netherlands, France, Germany etc.,1644 -1858. Originals at the Walloon Library in Leiden. Again, arranged alphabetically according to surnames and films are numbered from 0199963 (AA-BARSE) to 0199983 (VOORBURG-ZIEGLER). I have heard the Mirandolle collection described as "not as helpful" as the Leiden collection but I don't know why. To find a complete listing of these collections, go to the LDS site at www.familysearch.org. Click on Family History Library System (right side of screen), then on Family History Library Catalog, then on either of these two choices -- 1) Place Search. Type in Leiden and a full listing of records held for this location will come up, under various sub-headings. I believe the card indexes can be found under Church Records --Indexes. There will also be cross-reference to other relevent listings. 2) Film/Fiche Search -- type in any of the film numbers for this collection and a listing of the film contents will appear. This will cross reference you to other listings as well. Has anyone researched in these sources and gotten any results? Like Howard, I am unfamiliar with these records myself. Andrea

    3. 1. [HWE] Searching International Websites
    2. Clive Bates
    3. Following on from some recent discussion on international search here is a starter list of sites which may be useful for those about to research family names on European and particularly French sites. In addition to the well known http://www.familysearch.org/ http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/WebSites/frameset_websites.asp http://genforum.genealogy.com/ http://www.cyndislist.com/france.htm#Queries all of which have their international sections, I list the following sites. Their order is completely random. None is better than any other because it depends what you are looking for. Perhaps other listers would be kind enough to publish their favourite European sites as they discover them. http://www.deja.com/group/soc.genealogy.french - French genealogy newsgroup http://www.francegenweb.org/ - France GenWeb http://www.francogene.com/search-fr/index.html -Useful general information http://www.francogene.com/ - Gateway to American & Canadian search in France http://www.gefrance.com/index.htm - Genealogy and History in France (commercial) http://www.genealogy.tm.fr/ - Guide to Genealogy in France http://www.genenord.tm.fr/ - For those searching in Nord http://www.multimania.com/numa/assgensurnet.html - A full coverage of French genealogy sites http://www.gowingo.com/web/dube/links.html - Various genealogy links http://www.nomade.fr/ - And enter "genealogie" to search http://www.geneanet.org/genealogy/en/linkspays1 - List of international sites .......and two sample Yahoo searches: http://fr.search.yahoo.com/search/fr?p=ancetres&y=y&e=2100216957&f=0%3A78253 31%3A9159814%3A2100000001%3A2100065197%3A2100065212%3A2100216957&r=Sciences+ humaines%02Anthropologie+et+arch%E9ologie%02Anthropologie+sociale+et+culture lle http://fr.dir.yahoo.com/Societe/Gens/Pages_personnelles/Familles/ Also http://cpcug.org/user/jlacombe/mark.html A wealth of international links. For those with a geographical bent, these map sites may be of interest: http://www.mapquest.com/ - World Street maps by country http://perso.wanadoo.fr/sylvain.chardon/locom/loc_dep.htm - Locate a village in France http://www.ordnancesurvey.gov.uk/ For search in UK, the online OS site will lead to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ A historic UK map showing the countryside and towns in 19th Century Britain. This site is temporally being upgraded and it is well worth waiting a week or two to see the faster version. http://www.theotherside.co.uk/ If you are planning a genealogical holiday this site shows the villages and history of Nord. Then there is of course the problem of translation if you want to post in the local language. Would somebody like to publish their list of Anglo,French/German/Dutch online dictionaries and translation services? Clive
