Hello fellow listers -- I have done some tinkering with the list guidelines recently. They are mostly the same as before but I have changed the wording and added a couple of new ones. They will be going on the list web site sometime today. As for the French and German versions of the guidelines, they will have to stay as they are for the time being -- unless SKS (ie. some kind soul) wants to volunteer to change those translations as well <g>. Please let me know if you have comments about any of the guidelines (off-list, please!) Andrea LIST GUIDELINES: 1. SURNAMES should be written in capital letters, both in the subject line and in the actual messages. Reason: This makes SURNAMES more noticeable and lets others know quickly if any names in your message are of interest to them. 2. Dates and locations (including the country) should be included in your postings. Reason: This makes it clear to others what area and time period you are interested in. Including the country is helpful for those who are unfamiliar with your geographical research area. 3. The subject line of your posting must match the content of your message. For example, include a SURNAME and/or topic, and/or a location and/or a time frame. It's also important to change the subject line, if appropriate, when replying to previous messages. (See guidelines #5 & #6 about replying). Reason: It is frustrating for others to discover that subject line and message content do not match. This is true both on the list and when searching the list archives. Also, some listers who may be interested in your message may delete it, without reading it, because the subject line is irrelevent to them. 4. Messages sent to the list should be written in plain text only (ie. no HTML, fancy fonts or colours) and should have no attachments. Reason: Rootsweb has filters to block messages which are not written in plain text or which have attachments. It will reject that message and not send it to the list. 5. When replying to previous posts by others, subscribers are encouraged to reply on the list if they have information which they think would be helpful for others as well. However, when doing so, it's important to delete most or all of that previous post in your reply. Reason: Posting replies on the list contributes to discussion between subscribers. Deleting previously posted material eliminates duplication of information, both on the list and in the list archives. 6. When you reply to a previous post from another subscriber, a short summary or <snip> of the previous message placed at the beginning of your reply lets others know who/what you are replying to. Reason: This lets others know immediately what you are talking about. It reminds others of the previous post and brings new subscribers into the discussion without having to wonder what it's all about. 7. Personal messages (such as a thank-you meant for only one person) or messages which have no genealogical content (such as a holiday greeting) are not appropriate as posts to the list. They are best sent privately to individuals, off-list. Reason: This is a mailing list meant for genealogical discussion. 8. Keep re-posting your surname interests frequently -- about once a month or more often if you learn new information. Try not to be discouraged if you receive no replies but keep trying. When you re-post, try a new subject line or rephrase the content of your message. Reason: Re-posting is *not* unnecessary repetition. In fact, Rootsweb recommends this practice on all its lists. It reminds others what your research is about. It also will be new information to those who've just subscribed to the list. 9. Become aware of copyright laws as they pertain to sharing or passing on of information on this mailing list or elsewhere on the Internet. For example, before quoting large portions of a published text, obtain copyright permission from the publisher. Similarly, if you would like to forward a list post to another source (eg. another list) please obtain permission first from the person who originally composed that message. Listers -- Just to update you with latest info regarding our list web site which is at http://www.island.net/~andreav/index.html. I have been receiving positive comments and also excellent suggestions from fellow listers about the site and I will answer you all personally (sorry about the delay with that). After fellow lister Geoff sent me his comments, I decided to break up the Home Page into four smaller sections and that has now been done (Thanks , Geoff!). Check it out and see what you think (don't forget to click on Refresh first). Also, the link in the Introduction section titled Huguenot History and Timeline is now working. My ancestor with my favourite name is Grissel or Grishild MOUNTAGNE. She married Edward BOUTLE in Lamarsh, Essex on 26 Feb 1772 but I have never been able to find her birth or anything about her. I suspect she had Huguenot origins. Is any other lister interested in the Mountagnes in this period? Best regards Michael

I understand that my BOUTEL (and variant spellings) ancestors in Essex probably had Huguenot origins. My 6G grandfather John BOWTELL and his wife Ann LOTT had children in Mount Bures, Essex from 1741-47. I'd be pleased to hear from anyone interested in this name. Best wishes Michael

Listers -- this is in response to the 21 Nov post from John <JRBOUFFLER@aol.com> in which he said he thought that he would be infringing copyright if he extracted names and details from the Vital Records Index (British Isles). John had offered to do look-ups for fellow listers in this source. I could be wrong here -- I don't find copyright law easy to understand! -- but I don't see how extracting a few surnames out of this source (or any source, for that matter) is an infringement of copyright. After all, isn't this what we do all the time as researchers and genealogists? We extract certain selected names and details out of records, usually for our own personal use but sometimes for others, and we most likely share that information with anyone else who is interested. Without wanting to get into a protracted discussion about copyright on this list, I don't see how names, dates and locations are copyrightable. It would be infringing on copyright if you took large chunks, verbatim, out of a source that was compiled or written by someone else. I can see that. But I don't see how extracting some names out of an index is a copyright problem. What about the IGI -- isn't extracting info out of it the very reason it exists? As I said, I don't fully understand copyright law -- although I have tried! Maybe I'm mixing apples and oranges here. Just my humble opinion. As I mentioned,this list is is not the appropriate place for a copyright discussion but if anyone has copyright info to send me privately, I will put it all together into one message and post it to the list. Sorry, but due to my recent ISP account switching I seem to have missed earlier messages in the thread. Are you responding to Klaus Billet? Since you apparently may not legally quote or copy extensive material from the CD, I would hope that small amounts of material may be quoted, provided a source citation is given. If that is correct and agreeable, can you advise whether anything appears concerning a Kraft Billet, b. est c 1730-35, or either a Gottlieb Billet or a Balthasar Billet, b. c 1700-1715 ? My purpose in asking is that Klaus and I have been trying for several years to connect the 1751 immigrant, Kraft Billet, who settled in Hellam Twp., York County, Pa. to his ancestors and to the data base of German Billet people that Klaus has compiled. It is purely my hypothesis that his father may have been either Gottlieb or Balthasar Baltzer). Of the two names I favor Balthasar as his father, since Kraft named his first son, Balthasar, b. 1759, who died young, and then Kraft Billet named another son, Baltzer.
