    1. [HWE] Web site: another 2 links
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hello, listers -- Just to let you know that two more links now contain information and should be in working order on the list website (http://www.island.net/~andreav/index.html). They are Viruses & Hoaxes and Personal Websites. Both are in the Beyond the Basics section. Note that the Personal Websites link used to be called Subscriber Websites. Since subscriber submissions were sparse, I began a trawl of the Net to see what I could find and have come up with about half a dozen sites so far which mention Huguenot ancestry. Hope you find them interesting and, if any of you find a common link, I hope you'll post the news to the list. If it seems to you that I am adding new links in no particular order, you're right! I'm working on most of them at one time or another, a little bit here, a little bit there, as I get the time. Some are easier to complete than others. With others, I just get bogged down or it's more difficult to gather the needed information. So some get done sooner, some later. All will get done eventually! I hope you'll contact me if you have web site contributions or feedback about the site. Regards and good night, Andrea

    3. Jerry, Perhaps you would like to clarify precisely what you are looking for. Do you have a particular name or event or maybe a date in mind. I say that because the names you have mentioned are fairly common and certainly appear in the records of the Threadneedle St Church. As another example I have before me an article which appeared in the September journal of the Societe de l'Histoire du Protestantisme Francais which mentions a book containing "Quinze sermons de Jean Daillè". This man was a Pasteur and a very prominent follower of Calvin - the book was published in 1653 by Daniel Lerpiniere which is the family I am studying. Should this person be of interest I do have more information and may well have details of his birth which I think took place in Saumur where he attended the Academy. Whilst I am happy to look for a specific entry I do not have the time, or inclination, to trawl through records on the off chance that the name might be there. 1. [HWE] Glasshouse St./Leicester Fields Churches, London, ENG
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hello, listers -- This is in response to a post today (27 Nov) from Liisa (whose e-mail is usually <liisahobler@hotmail.com >) re: the Glass House Street and Leicester Fields French Huguenot Churches in London in connection with surnames HOBLER and CLAUDON. Information about these two churches has been posted in the past on this list. For example, the list archives has Glasshouse mentioned in 9 previous posts, Leicester Fields was in 7 posts. Some of these posts had details about the churches (eg. locations), especially those which were in a series last July on the Huguenot Churches of London. The reference number mentioned by Liisa in her post -- C049211 -- is what the LDS calls a batch number. It's a reference number used in the IGI (International Genealogical Index) to refer back to the original records. The C at the beginning stands for Christenings. If you go to the IGI online (www.familysearch.org), click on Search for Ancestors, then on IGI. Select British Isles and England as the location. You can then type in either HOBLER or CLAUDON, using these batch numbers and all the records from the Glasshouse and Leicester Fields churches for those surnames should come up in a list. Try changing the C at the beginning of the batch number for an M to look for marriages. (Remember that the IGI does not normally include burials or deaths.) I checked the batch number in one of the HOBLER records on the IGI and, in the this case, it refers to a printout of records from Glasshouse and Leicester Fields which are on microfiche # 6903732. Remember also that all French church records published by the Hug. Soc. of London have been entered into the IGI (with the exception of deaths/burials). Therefore, you should be able to obtain those listings on the IGI. LDS has also filmed the records of these and other London churches. Please see the previous posts in the archives for details such as film numbers. Lastly, a caution about the IGI. It's a wonderful tool but it is, after all, only an index. By definition, incomplete and with transcription errors. Finding records on the IGI is no substitute for searching the original records themselves to verify information. Also, the original records usually contain much more than the information on the IGI. For example, christenings may include names of friends, relatives, grandparents or godparents. Marriage records often contain parents or siblings or friends' names. All this is omitted on the IGI. The LDS has established many FHCs (Family History Centres) worldwide. You can order films or fiche there and, thus, search original records. Information about where FHCs are located is on the LDS website. I hope this information has helped. Andrea

    1. [HWE] Chambons and Mentoulles located
    2. John Johnson
    3. Thanks to Patrick Malan, Hugh Seay and Virginia Holter. Chambons and Mentoulles are located in the mountains and valleys of the Piedmont about 70 kilometers west of Turin (Torino). Pictures of the area can be seen at a web site for the town of Fenestrelle. www.fortedifenestrelle.com/Indice2.html This web site has good pictures of the area as well as a small map showing the forts and towns. This area was in the path of the migration of the Waldensians as they moved from the Dauphine and Savoy into what is now Italy, and then north through Switzerland and into Germany.

    3. Following up the message regarding the name DOLLE there are many references to this name, and variants, in the register of the French Church of Threadneedle Street. If you can let me know the nature of the enquiry, which I have missed, I can post details as I hold most of Quarto series fiches issued by The Huguenot Society of Great Britain. Roy Day

    3. Listers -- This is in reply to the inquiry on 25 Nov from Tom <sumo@bellatlantic.net> about additional details re: DOLLE, which was one of the surnames I posted on the same day, from the Threadneedle St. Church tésmoignages. Sorry, I did not mention in my latest post on this topic -- but I did in earlier ones -- that I only have the surnames from this source at the moment, and not the accompanying details. Tom, please check the IGI for the DOLLE surname. The tésmoignages listings will not be in there but the Threadneedle St. church records should be (as are all church records published by the Huguenot Society of London). Perhaps some DOLLE names are in those church records. Regards, Andrea

    1. [HWE] Appeal for website input
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hi everyone -- I must tell you that I have been disappointed at the lack of response to my previous appeals for contributions to our website. For example, on 10 Nov, I asked if anyone had further links or sites to add those sections of our website entitled: Who were the Huguenots and Walloons? and Huguenot History and Timeline Since there were no replies to that, I went ahead with what I had been able to gather myself. Contributions are still and always welcome anytime, though. It's now become easy for me to edit (add to/subtract from) pages which are already on the web site so please send in your suggested additions at any time, as posts to the list, please. (I didn't think I would ever be able to say that this whole thing as "easy" a month or so ago but I'm starting to believe it now! Maybe my son was right after all!<g>) About a week later, on 16 Nov., I posted two separate messages. One asked if anyone had personal sites they wanted included (for the section titled Subscriber Sites). There was no response. In view of this, I am considering changing the title of this section to Personal Sites and including personal websites which are about Huguenots but not necessarily those of subscribers (eg. the DELAFORCE site which I posted about on 18 Nov. would be a good example of this type.) The second 16 Nov. post asked for suggestions for links to include to sites which were specifically about Huguenots (for the section titled Huguenot Links and Sites). The only restriction here was that the links be to Huguenots (mostly) in Europe and/or UK and/or Ireland. Again, there was no response. I know you are busy.......but......does anyone out there have any suggestions in the above categories for our web site? If so, please post to the list. Pretty soon, all the winter solstice festivals will be upon us and then most of us truly will not have the time......so let's do it now......please. This is not just "my" web site. It's the list web site and the list belongs to all of us. It's what *we* make it. Posting hopefully, Andrea

    3. I have read the suggestion that the name LASEUR or LA SEUR should have any connection to the name LE SUEUR. I don't believe that LA SEUR (LASEUR) is a variant of LE SUEUR (LESUEUR). If it was LA SUEUR (LASUEUR), it could be right. I think LASEUR is originally Laceur (maker of laces). But if someone knows a better explanation? Cornelis van den Berg, Amsterdam

    1. [HWE] GENOT: pre-1800, NL, BEL & FRA
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hello, list -- This is a very late and slow response to a post on 13 Nov from Marc <genot@euronet.nl> re: surname GENOT, pre-1800, Netherlands, Belgium and France. The location mentioned in Belgium was Erpent. I can offer no specific information about this surname but maybe the following comments will help in deciding where to look next. First, I tried a Place Search on the LDS site (www.familysearch.org) but found only Catholic records listed there for Erpent (they may be worth looking at, at some point). However, since Erpent is part of Namur, BEL (in the border area between France and Belgium), it might be a good idea to look at Protestant records for that location. For example, there is an Inventory of parish registers of Namur on LDS film # 315176. The originals are located at l'Archives de l'Etat at Namur. Possibly other useful records can be located using the Place Search method for Namur, BEL and looking under sub-headings such as Church Records, Inventories, registers & catalogs, etc. I also had a look at the IGI (also on the LDS site) to see if it had any helpful clues. There are many GENOT names listed there for Namur locations. It's impossible to say whether the surname was actually more common in that region or if more-than-the-usual records for Namur have been transcribed into the IGI. It is also cross-referenced in this source with GENETTE. Last, there have been two previous posts to the list, a few months ago, about Namur and the Flanders area (2 and 16 August). Please look in the list archives for these posts. Instructions on how to access the list archives are on the list web site at http://www.island.net/~andreav/index.html in section titled The Basics. I hope these comments are useful. Andrea >I hope someone can tell me more about the surname GENOT.
