    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: geagles@rivernet.net To: IRL-LEIX-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Sunday, January 07, 2001 8:59 PM Subject: PORTARLINGTON French Church On my trip to Leix Co.,Ireland in 1980's I snapped a picture of the large plaque on the church wall facing the street. HUGUENOT CHURCH The original French Church (St. Paul's) was built in 1696 for the Huguenot settlers brought to Portarlington by Henri Massue, Marquis de Ruvigny,Viscount Galway, who was granted land here to reward his services in King William's III army. The French language was used both for Divine Service and for entering the Register of Baptisms,Marriages and Burials until about 1816. They built fine houses with high-pitched roofs and tall chimneys, presenting blank walls to the streetfront with the main windows facing beautiful gardens and orchards which included oranges, lemons, black Italian walnuts and jargonelle pears. There existed for a time in Portarlington a soap factory,a linen industry, a Glass-works and a Malthouse but the settlement was more famous for the purity of the French spoken here and its French Schools which included Ecole St. Germain (now Searson's Hotel) and Arlington School (now Travel Goods Ltd.). The Church was completely rebuilt in 1851 Our family has original pencil sketches from the 1820-30's and one is of the church before the tower was added. I left photocopies of the sketches for the church to have in their archives. My ancestors were Eacret/Eacrett's and were involved with the Huguenot settlement of Ireland with Oliver Cromwell's army. The Eacret/Eacrett families are spread across the USA, Canada.,Australia and New Zealand. I am a descendant of Mary Ann Eacrett who emigrated to Hay Twp.,Huron County,Ontario with her parents, Michael Eacrett and Jane Bailey from Ballybrittas.Seven brothers of MaryAnn also came. Mary Ann married Patrick O'Brien a native of Co.Kildare but who also came to Hay Twp. I would appreciate any contact with researchers of either the Eacrett or Bailey families. 1. [HWE] List Guidelines: a re-posting
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hello to everyone -- It's your list concierge here just doing a little New Millennium tidying-up. I thought this would be a good time (New Year, New Millennium, H-W-E First Birthday) to re-post our list guidelines. These have been on the list website for some weeks now but perhaps you haven't had a look at them. They are basically the same guidelines we've always had but I've changed them a bit, added some, deleted others, also clarified them (hopefully!) by adding reasons why each guideline exists. In particular, I would like to draw your attention to guidelines # 2, 3, 4 and 5. That is, please capitalize all surnames in your posts, remember to add dates and specific locations, make sure your subject line is specific and, lastly, <snip> off (delete) most or all of a previous message if it is part of your own post. By the way, if anyone would volunteer to translate the guidelines as they are now written, into any of these three languages -- French, German and Dutch -- I would be most grateful. We do have the guidelines in French and German on the website but they are translations of the earlier version, done when the list first began. And we don't have any in Dutch at all. Please contact me off-list if you can help. Thanks. Andrea Our guidelines are: 1) Messages sent to the list should be written in plain text only (ie. no HTML, fancy fonts or colours) and should also have no attachments. Reason: Rootsweb has filters to block messages which are not written in plain text or which have attachments. It will reject that message and not send it to the list. 2) SURNAMES should be written in capital letters, both in the subject line and in the actual messages. Reason: This makes the names more noticeable and lets others know quickly if any names in your message are of interest to them. 3) Dates and locations (including the country) should be included in your postings. Messages should focus primarily on Europe and/or UK and/or Ireland. Posts which are mostly or entirely about North American locations are not appropriate. Reason: Let others what location and time period you are interested in. Including the country is helpful for those who are unfamiliar with your research area. The geographical focus of this list is Europe, and/or the UK and/or Ireland. Therefore, those locations should be the ones mentioned in your posts. 4) The subject line of your posting is very important. First, it must match the content of your message and, second, it must be as specific as possible. For example, include a surname and/or topic, and/or a location and/or a time frame. Reason: It is frustrating for others to discover that subject line and message content do not match. This is true both on the list and when searching the list archives. Also, some listers who may be interested in your message may delete it, without reading it, because the subject line is irrelevent to them. 5) When replying to a previous post by another subscriber, it's important to: a) delete most or all of that previous post in your reply, b) make sure the subject line is appropriate, changing it if necessary and c) place a short summary or <snip> of the previous message at the beginning of your reply. Reason: a) Deleting previously posted material eliminates duplication of information, both on the list and in the list archives. b) Subject lines should match message content (see guideline #4). c) A summary or <snip> lets others know immediately what you are talking about. It's a reminder of the previous post and brings new subscribers into the discussion without them wondering what it's all about. 6) Subscribers are encouraged to participate in list discussion whenever possible and appropriate. For example, reply on the list, rather than privately to another subscriber, if you have information which you think would be helpful for others as well. Also, share your research successes and/or frustrations with other listers (you may receive some helpful replies!) Reason: Posting on the list contributes to discussion and sharing among subscribers. This is what makes a mailing list successful and interesting. 7) Personal messages (such as a thank-you note) or messages which have no genealogical content (such as a holiday greeting) are not appropriate as posts to the list. They are best sent privately to individuals, off-list. Reason: This is a mailing list meant for genealogical discussion. It's also an international mailing list with subscribers living in quite a few different countries and they may not all celebrate the same holidays that you do. 8) Keep re-posting your surname interests frequently -- about once a month or more often if you learn new information. Try not to be discouraged if you receive no replies but keep trying. When you re-post, try a new subject line or rephrase the content of your message. Reason: Re-posting is not unnecessary repetition. In fact, Rootsweb recommends this practice on all its lists. It reminds others what your research is about. It also will be new information to those who've just joined the list. 9) Be aware of copyright laws as they pertain to sharing or passing on information on this mailing list or elsewhere on the Internet. For example, before quoting large portions of a published text, obtain permission from the publisher or the author. Similarly, if you would like to forward a list post to another source (eg. another list) please obtain permission first from the person who originally composed that message. Reason: Protect yourself from infringement of copyright laws. 10) Subscribers are expected to treat everyone else on the list with respect and courtesy. Harrassment and/or verbal attacks of any kind, for any reason, will not be tolerated. Should any of these situations occur, the list administrator will take action to stop it. This may include unsubscribing offenders from the list. Reason: Your fellow subscribers are entitled to the same respect and courtesy which you show to people face-to-face in daily life. For further information on this subject, please see the section on our list website titled: Harrassment and/or Verbal Attacks(On and Off-List): -- What You Can Do. It's in the Beyond the Basics section. END

    1. [HWE] Thanks & Info re: Personal Websites
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Fellow listers-- Thanks so much for the great information posted to the list over the last week! We've already had almost half the number of posts received for the whole month of December, and we're only a week into January! What a great way to celebrate the H-W-E list's first birthday (it's on the 12th)! Again, thanks to you all. I've enjoyed just sitting back and reading them all. I'd also like to thank Ina for the URL she posted a couple of days ago (6 Jan) re: Huguenots who went to Denmark. I will be adding it to the section on Huguenot Links & Sites on our own website (but this is still a work in progress, as are many of the links in Beyond the Basics, and not functioning yet). This also gives me the opportunity to mention another section of our website and that is the Personal Sites (in Beyond the Basics). If you haven't checked it out recently, I hope you will do so because additions have been made to it. For example, there are listings for websites on the following surnames, all submissions from subscribers to this list: ** BOBO (BABAU, BEAUBEAU, BAUBAU, BUBBOE) ** DELAFORCE ** GREW, GROU, GLEW (originally LE GROU?), with associated names MOUSSET, PROFICHET, THOURY, CALLAS & BARNARDIER. ** HARESIGN, HAIRSINE (variants: HERSIN, HERSSIN, HERSEN, HERSEIN, HERSENT) ** LERPENIÈRE ** TOUCHARD (variants: LATOUCHE, LETOUCHE, TOUCHET, TOUCHON) As well as the above, there are non-subscribers' websites listed for the following surnames. * BEHARRELL * BEUZEVILLE & ROUSSEL, * DELEURAN (this is the site mentioned by Ina) * DEVANTIER, DEVANTIE (with DESMARETS & DUPONT) * GODOWN (variants: GODON, GOEDOWNE, GODOWNE, GODOWNS, LESGODON, GODONET & GODINOT, GODINET) * JULLION * LANIER * MALLANDAINE, MALLANDAIN, MALLINDINE, MALLENDINE (new URL for this one) It's a good idea to have at least a quick look at each of these sites because other surnames are mentioned on most of them. All for now. Andrea

    3. In an earlier mail I did say I would let the list know how to search the above and set out below the reply I have received. It means you can enquire about a name, giving as much information as possible, they will then carry out research and let you know the result, either positive or negative, and ask for the appropriate sum to be forwarded and upon receipt they will send the information. You have the choice also of subscribing for a year at a cost of F270 which covers 15 searches. It may be better to pay F60 for upto three researches. This is because you do not have to pay for negative searches. This has been my short experience where I have made three requests which were all negative and no payment was required. Needles to say the requests must be in French and the payment in Francs. The latter should not be a problem as I have made such payments, but not to this source, in notes and sent it registered post. I am happy to carry out a limited search of names contained in this library - there are supposed to be over 200,000. You will need to narrow the search as far as possible either to a place or department. Roy Day. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bibliotheque genealogique" <bibgen@wanadoo.fr> To: "Roy E. David | C. A. Agnew. Printed in London by Reeves and Turner, in Edinburgh by William | Paterson, 1874. | | Page 188: The Caumont and Layard Group of Families | | The Ducs Caumont de la Force were descended from Francois de Caumont, Seigneur | de Castlenauth, who was killed in the St. Bartholomew Massacre. His son was the | first duke, and the family was true to the Protestantism until the persecution | of 1685, when the fourth duke apostatized. The only refugee at the Revocation | period was his wife, the Duchesse de la Force, nee Susanne Beringhen, the mother | of the fifth and sixth dukes. She died in London in 1731. | | Notes | The Beringhen family were warmly admired for their constancy under persecution. | The father (who was an Elder of Charenton), the mother, sons, married daughters, | and daughters marriageable, all were severely tried. Members of the La Force | family had settled in England at earlier dates. In Chelsea ("Faulkner's Chelsea" | Vol. 1, page 210), there is the following epitaph in Latin:- snip You quote from the book by David Agnew. Which volume is it as I have volumes 1 & 2 and it does not appear to be in either of them. There must therefore be further volumes. By a strange coincidence I have today received, on my return from holiday, the "Cahier du Centre de Genealogie Protestante No 71" issued by the SHPF and contained within is an article "Les huguenots de Sunbury d'apres les sources francaises" by Jean-Luc Tulot. This contains a long write up on several families living in this French Colony. One of those is the BERINGHAM family, La duchesse de la Force. This family is well documented over three A4 pages of print. Many other names and families are described in this publication and if of interest I will seek the authors permission, I am already in correspondence with him, to list all the names on this list and copy the relevant sections to those that find a name of interest listed. I shall also need permission from the SHPF so it could take some time. This part of what is now Surrey, but was Middlesex, is also the subject of an article in the Huguenot Proceedings and a publication issued by the Local History Society. The later has also been translated into French but I am attempting to obtain the original document. This list many names, some in addition to the above publication and there are nearly two pages on La duchesse de Caumont La Force. Again I will check if this can be distributed. The reason for my interest is in the families GIBERNE and LERPINIERE and both of these were connected with Sunbury. The strange thing is that many years ago our family used to live at Sunbury and attended the same church as the Huguenot families and we had a daughter baptised there. At the time we were totally ignorant as to the family connection. Roy Day.

    3. I would like to thank Chris Shelley for his listings of Godefroy births from Rouen, he has made me a very happy man because I think that he has found MY Jean Godefroy in 1684. All I need to do now is to find his marriage which I as yet have not found , it would have been about 1705, have checked St Vincent at Rouen, anybody got any thoughts how/where I might be able to locate it. He married Francoise Marple and one of his sons Jean was baptised at Rouen in 1707, where the other children were baptised I do not know. Regards Robin Godefroy godefroy@clara.co.uk

    1. [HWE] Thanks for Look-up
    2. Barbara Holt
    3. Hullo Lesley Many thanks for your very fast look-up ! You seem to have sent your reply only a short time after I posted my message this morning. The two Clement men and their families that you found on Huguenot lists are definitely of interest. I have already found a few of Clements arriving in England in the 1600's. The earliest is Jan Clement who married Antoinette Jehanes in Southampton in 1571. They could be the parents of my Joseph as Dyer mentions a Jehanes family in the Diocese of Kilalloe which some researchers had confused with a Jones family. Does anyone out there have any interest in the Jehanes family, I wonder? Vol IV of the Huguenot Society of London mentions the same Jan Clement as a native of Darquigehem sur Le Lis which is not in my atlas. Does anyone know here it is? ). His wife Antoinette was a native of Valenciennes. I have met the Michael you found in a publication of the London-based Huguenot Society in which it said he asked for his last grant in August 1682 "to go back with his family to Holland." He was an attorney from Guise (which is in France ), not too far south of Valenciennes. The James you found is probably not the father of a Charlotte who was buried at the French Church of St Patrick on 2 May 1698, dau of "Jaques Clements and Charlotte Henry ( unless latter was a second wife.) My problem is to isolate which one of a number of Clement(s) family members leaving the Continent was my ancestor. I think I need to try to find out next whether they are all from same part of France or Holland or elsewhere. An American, Beverley Sinn Clement in her family history, 1996, on an LDS fiche said she had found no evidence of French history but much evidence of Dutch ancestry in her family which made her assume they were French Huguenots. She is descended from a Jan Clement who emigrated from Holland to New York in 1665. A book about origins of names says that Clement is a typical name people take when they need a new name because it had good vibes, having belonged to two Popes in the 14th century). This may account for the number of Huguenot Clement family members I have to choose from. I have a hunch ( based on their physical appearance only) that mine may have been originally Spanish Jews who escaped to Holland in the 15th c. I have not tackled any Continental country's records yet at the LDS but plan to do so soon. I presume that the lists you found in your book do not give country of origin for James Clement? No need to reply if they don't. Finding my Irish Clement ancestral line is made slightly more difficult by the fact that, according to an LDS film called "The origin of the Clements family in England and Ireland", there was, in 1100, a Norman, Robert Clements, who migrated from France to England then to Ireland. He later returned to France as Prime Minister and Regent and in 1214 his son Henry was given the Lordship of Mey and of Aquitaine by the French King. An English and Irish Clements family branched from the Clement du Mey family of France in Oliver Cromwell's time. I suspect most of the Irish Clements later prominent in politics and high society in Ireland were descendants of that line, not my Huguenot line. I am having some success at present asking others who are researching Clement families in Ireland to look at photos of my 19th century family. Two have seen a facial likeness to some members of theirs which is encouraging and may help us get me back to a common ancestor. Incidentally, sorry I forgot to send the message to you personally as well as to the list. I presume you sent the list your reply? I will send my response to it in case someone may have a comment that helps me. Thanks again, Barbara Holt in NZ

    3. This is in response to Lesley Jones' Look-Up offer posted to this List on 5 January 2001 and also to Andrea's request for renewal of our interests. Last year I found three men of religion in Ireland who seem as though they could be my Irish ancestors, in a book by Rev Philip Dwyer(1878) called "The Diocese of Killaloe" which is on film in the LDS library (590 pages). It is similar to Lesley's book in that it quotes some of the same sources ( eg Cotton) and drops into long passages of Latin frequently. Lesley, if your fiche of the book : "Protestant Exiles from France in the reign of Louis XIV or the Huguenot refugees and Their Descendants in Great Britain and Ireland" by Agnew, David C.A., 1874, has a good name index and the time period seems right to you, I would be most grateful if you would look for these three men in it. They are: JOSEPH CLEMENT, Church of Ireland Vicar of Roscrea, a Munster man inducted on Feb 25, 1621. SAMUEL ELLIOTT, attended Trinity College, Dublin, Church of Ireland Rector of Killenboy, County Clare in 1626 - 1633, said to have been made Archdeacon 1641. ( I had assumed Elliott was of Scots-Irish descent until seeing the name Eliot / Elot posted on one of Andrea's lists. It had seemed odd to me that a man from a well-known Border Scots family would become a Minister of the Church of Ireland, tho I suppose anything's possible). LEWIS JONES, C of Ireland Bishop of Killaloe (born abt 1560 - d 1646). Jones was born in Wales. But his Will, included in the book by Dyer, shows that he had a son Michael, whose middle name was DORE. As this name has been mentioned on the List as a possible Huguenot one, I include Jones as he may have had a Huguenot wife or mother. Also mentioned in the Will is Mary Elliott, whom I presume to be Jones' married daughter and very possibly, the wife of Rev Samuel Elliott. There are other Dutch and French-sounding names mentioned in Dyer's book, which may be of interest to others searching for Huguenot ancestors in Ireland in the 17th century. I hope to hear fom you, Lesley. Most gratefully, Barbara Holt in rural New Zealand.

    1. [HWE] SURNAMES
    2. Hello Everyone, To start the new year I am posting my surname. I am looking for my Huguenot ancestor Laux JENTER, born circa 1580 in France, escaped into Germany and settled into Heselwangen, Germany, where he died 8 Apr 1665. This is now part of Baden-Wuerttemberg. Laux's son was Laux Richter JENTER, he was born in 1633, I am not sure where, possibly France, possibly Germany. His son was Laux JENTER who was born 17 Oct 1654, in Heselwangen and died there 26 Sep 1727. I have church records from this Laux JENTER born in Heselwangen 17 Oct 1654 all the way to myself. I am at the moment trying to connect the JENTER's found in the IGI from the United Kingdom. Since we know that all the USA and Canada JENTER's descend from Laux born 1580, there are about 300 of us, and it looks more and more like all the Germany JENTER's can all trace their ancestry to this Laux, I feel almost certain that the early UK JENTER's were also Huguenots, and probably related to us also. Recently I have discovered that the name JENTER could have been JENDER, JENDRE, GENDER and GENDRE. There is a possibility that JENTER's may have come from Herbsheim, Alsace Lorraine, France. Herbsheim is about 50 miles from Heselwangen Germany. Over the years both Germany and France have claim the Alsace Lorraine area. I would be most appreciative to hear from anyone with information on JENTER, JENDER, JENDRE, GENDER or GENDRE. Thank you. Karen JENTER Michigan USA

    1. [HWE] URL correction: Cyndi's List
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hello and thanks to those alert listers who let me know that I had the wrong URL for Cyndi's List in my post yesterday (4 Jan, re: Website Link). The correct URL should be www.cyndislist.com. It's nice to know that you're all out there, reading and paying attention to what comes through on the list <g>. Keeps me on my toes...... Now, has anyone got any Belgian, and/or German links that can be added to the website, as I mentioned in that post yesterday?? I'm looking for genealogical sites which would be helpful to listers who are researching in those areas. They do not need to be specifically about Huguenot/Walloon research but sites of that type would, of course, be very appreciated. These are links/sites which I can add to the Beyond the Basics section under Huguenot Links & Sites and also Other Links & Sites. If you have suggestions, please post them to the list. Many thanks. Andrea
