This is in response to the thread about translations (under subject line: Special Churchbook dictionary for French entries?), first brought up by Ina a couple of days ago. Kaye is right in saying that the LDS site (www.familysearch.org) has some excellent Word Lists -- for various languages such as French, German, Dutch, etc. -- under their Research Helps section. However....... they used to be free of charge and I now see that they are accessible only if you purchase them on the LDS site. This is also the case with some of their other useful guides in this section such as Research Outlines, Letter-Writing Guides, etc. Prices are 50 cents to a dollar (U.S.) depending on the item. I don't know when this this change happened but I first noticed it after LDS redesigned their website a few months ago. That's why I found the URL posted by Ed very interesting because it gives you access to these Word Lists, etc. free of charge, just as they were before! This must be a glitch on the LDS site which anyone interested should take advantage of before it disappears. I have found that, if you do not use the long URL Ed provided but, instead, try to access the same section via shorter URLs which worked previously (such as: http://www3.familysearch.org/sg/France.html), you will get a message saying that that page no longer exists and directing you to previously-free-of-charge resources which are now for sale. Similarly, if you search for these items on the LDS site, using the following method, you will get the same results. Try it. Once on the site, click on Search tab (along top of your screen). Then click on Research Helps. This will lead you to another page (at: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/RG/frameset_rhelps.asp) where you can select the first letter of the country you are interested in (eg. France, Germany, Netherlands, etc.) which will lead you to a listing of the Research Helps for that location, only some of which are free. The reason why the LDS Word Lists are so helpful is because they are, of course, genealogically-oriented. Most on-line translation sites are not. Soon, I hope to have two related links on this topic working on our website -- they are Translations Online and Dictionaries & Word Lists in the Beyond the Basics section. Has anyone got links to URLs which would be helpful here? The difference between the two is that the first link (Translations Online) would be for translating text (whole sentences, paragraphs) whereas the second link is for translating single words. While researching my french huguenot ancestors I have to fight my way through French churchbook entries for the French Reformed Church here in Germany. What I'm trying to say is: all the entries are in French and I don't know the language! Is there anywhere a list of the special words in French-English, or French-German used in this entries? Or a list to translate the old professions mentioned? I can get most of the information out of the entries through the dates (sometimes even the dates are written in words!) and the family names. Emma and William PAYNEs dau Emily Thamar Elizabeth PAYNE marr Edward BEDWELL, 1908 Wandsworth. Their dau Emily Margaret Jessie BEDWELL came to New Zealand as a young girl. Georges deVlieger (silkmerchant) living in Roubaix France till 1905, I believe Georges to be Valentiene and Pierre's father. Also searching for information on Georges Henricus Van Laeys married Caroli Mercier in St. Bartholomy's in 1888 Mouscron, Belguim, Carl Lividocus Van Laeys listed in marraige contract as Georges's father. Fellow listers -- As a follow-up to my post yesterday (10 Jan) re: Walloon churches in Zuid Holland, here is further info about other Walloon churches in the Netherlands. It was obtained from LDS fiche # 6000055 -- Walloon or French Reformed Church Records of the Netherlands (Waalse of Frans Hervormde), a microfiche copy of a brochure published by LDS in 1973. The info in this source (eg. film numbers) should still be valid but since the original pamphlet was published some time ago I suppose it wouldn't hurt to check it through a Place Search in the Family History Library Catalog on the LDS website (www.familysearch.org). According to the info on the fiche, the oldest Walloon congregation in the Netherlands was established in Middelburg, Zeeland in 1571. By 1688, there were 62 Walloon congregations, including those in the areas of southern Limburg and the Rhineland, GER (which was then occupied by the Dutch). (The line I'm interested in semmed to settled on Ferree in Pennsylvania, USA.) In 1708 they went to England. Before leaving they got permission. That document says in part (translated from the original German): "Whereas Maria, Daniel Fuehre's widow, and her son Daniel Fuehre ...purpose to emigrate from Steinweiler in the mayoralty of Bittigheim , High Bailiwick Germersheim, via Holland and England, to the island of Pennsylvania..." Dated March 10th, 1708 [I think that should be Belligheim, not Bettigheim, as there is a town today called Belligheim near Steinweiler.] They also got a certificate from their church. This says in part (translated from the original French): Temoignage pour Daniel Firre et sa famille. "We, the Pastor, Elders and Deacons of the Reformed Walloon Church of Pelican, in the Lower Palatinate,..." I have not been able to find Pelican on a map. Does anyone know where it is? The children of Daniel, Jr. were baptised at Steinweiler in 1701 and Rhorbac [Rohrbach?] in 1703. The source for my info above is: History of Lancaster County [PA, USA] by I. Daniel Rupp, 1844, chapter 2. Due to the similar names, places, and time, I wonder if my people above are related to the people Ina mentioned. I would also like to know the ancestors of my Daniel Fuehre/Firre, Sr., and his wife, Maria Warenbuer. Daniel and Maria were supposedly born about 1650/1653. Sandy has hit a brick wall, mentioning occurence of these names in records of the Dordrecht Walloon Church (Netherlands) in 1616. Sandy -- just a thought -- what about trying a search of the records of other Walloon churches in the same province, ie. Zuid Holland? You could start with the ones closest to Dordrecht and work outwards. Family members may have been attending churches nearby or at least in the same area of the country. I had thought of the same reason for the mistake of the "D" in front of the name myself as you have suggested and think it is very likely to be true. I know the song "Mademoiselle from Armentieres" well but still have to locate the place on a map. I suppose you can't tell me the address of a good web-site for maps of France if you write to me again? Regarding a genealogical association, I think it may be asking too much of your friend to look for one on the slight chance of it knowing anything of relevance. La Famille arriverait de Rotterdam a Cap de Bonne Esperance en Mai 1688 dans bateau "OOSTERLANDT" Interesting info: Jacques Theron (Dutch East India Company Soldier) who subsequently married Marie-Jean was with the Du Preez familie on board an East Indiaman OOSTERLANDT that docked in Cape Town in May 1688. This boat was lost in astorm a year later in Table Bay, South Africa. At the time of the 300 year Hug. Festival in the Cape the wreck has just been located and is stille being explored. Having been covered with sand for 3 centuries the ship is still in good preservation and many interesting artifacts are on display is Cape Town. Well worth a visit if you ever visit the Cape and do not miss the Coin Francaise (French Corner) where the 1688-contingent were settled and the town of the THERONS Tulbagh in the then farflung Red Sand Valley that was converted into a vine and fruit paradise by founding father Jacques and his older sons and descendants. My Bullion line is traced back to Perthshire with the marriage of William BULLIONS and JANET HOWIE in 1775 at St Martin's Church, Perht shire, not far from the ancient Palace of Scone. Tradition is that William was a decendant of De Boullion from France. There is a Village in northern France called Bullion and I am trying to establish if the Bullion name emenated from this area (or Belgium) as a Huguenot emigrant to Scotland. What does puzzle me is your reference to St Vincent at Rouen as this is a Catholic Church although I do appreciate that some Huguenot baptisms did take place in such places. This could be particularly so around the time you are researching, 1705, as it would appear that very few if any temples were functioning at this time. Looking at the guide to Protestant records for the department Seine-Maritime I can find none for the period you are seeking. According to the forward to the Seine-Maritime section of the above guide the principle locations of the Protestants in this department were, and I quote " Bosc-Roger (Elbeuf), Criquetot, Lintot (Bolbec, Lillebonne), Luneray, Quevilly (Rouen..), Sanvic (le Havre), Senitot (Harfleur)". Of these the LDS appear to have records for the period you are seeking in respect of Criquetot and Luneray. I am unsure as to what records these are in view of the fact that none appear to be held by either the departmental or local archives in Rouen but it could be worth a try. Roy Day.
