    1. [HWE] French Huguenots from L'Alloeu, North-France to Strasburg, Uckermark
    2. Summary: List of names for Huguenot Ancestors and some history involved. I'm researching my French Huguenot ancestors. A lot of them came from North France, French Flanders and the area around Lille. I learned that the area L'ALLOEU means "free earth" and that in former times LAVENTIE was the capital of that region which included Fleurbaix, Sailly-sur-la-Lys and La Gorgue. Laventie is about 23 km (14 miles) west of Lille. Most of my ancestors left France around 1650 because of their reformed religion (Calvinists) but some as late as 1680. They settled for more than one generation in the Palatinate (KURPFALZ those days) around the area of Mannheim and Landau. But the French king Ludwig the 14th tried to conquer the Palatinate after 1685 so they fled first to Hessen and after a few years moved on to the Uckermark. The Prussian Kurfuerst Friedrich Wilhem, called "der grosse Kurfuerst", had invited them and granted them land and financial help to set up a business or for farming. He needed people because his land was devasted by the 30 years war, plague and another war agains Sweden. In some areas as the Uckermark only ten percent of the population had survived. So he had plenty of empty houses and farms to give to the newcomers. The French colonist got their own churches, schools and even own law with own judges, they had the right to keep their French language, customs and of course religion. These separate French colonies existed for over one century. The families kept to each other and married within each other. In my own family my greatgrandmother Hermine Henriette Fouquet was the first to marry a German in Strasburg as late as 1873. Before that date the lines are almost complete French on both sides! The FOUQUET branch of my family is supposed to be from the Thierache, Picardie, but if you come across that name, please let me know as well. I'm looking for any information about the following people, and their ancestors and sibblings: 1. Margueritte SALOME, *ca. 1679 in Fleurbaix, L'Alloeu, fr. I mention it because the book does indicate a link with Portarlington in that mention is made of an Anthony Hullin D'ORVAL, who died on 14th March 1739 and is buried in Portarlington, and a daughter Francoise who it states was Esther Le Blanc's niece. Not sure if this helps but if it does there is lots more information concerning both the D'ORVAL and LE BLANC names in the book. Roy Day.

    3. Dear Listers, Thanks to Andrea , I hope this message will be able to be read by all. Interested in a Boniface CLAISSE, born I believe in Bertincourt, France, c.1745 and married in La Patente Church, Spitalfields, in 1771 to Marie Le Bailey. He became a Church Elder at this Church. How can I find any further information? The related names are" DESCARRIERE, (LE) BAILLEY, DU PONT all around Spitalfields at the same time, however, after reading the Parish Register for this Church and carefully copying it down, It does not include the marriage of the above, although I did find the birth of Marie Le Bailey. Sorry this is so long-winded, but it's hard to get the message accross any other way. Regards, Lorraine

    3. Hello Leila and listers, I checked up BLANC in Lee and found LE BLANC in Portarlington abt 1699. There were two families, one of "Le noble homme Louys LE BLANC, Sieur de Perce, Capitaine pensionne", the other Claud LE BLANC, boucher. The latter family existed later under the name of BLONG, and a Peter BLANG in 1756 placed a tombstone for his family. In addition an Andrew and a Mark LE BLANC from Ales, received their naturalisation in Dublin in 1704. The name is apparently still extant in Portarlington. I think there is a good deal of documentation of the French colony at Portarlington, although I have no direct knowledge of it. Check firstly familysearch and see what you can find. On the reverse is an inscription: Miss Charlotte Cabane(i)s of Wallworth Surrey 1780. This is a new name to me in my family. I looked it up on the IGI, and it appeared to have A Huguenot connection. Can anyone enlighten me? Of course, if anyone has a connection with the family, I would be delighted! Judi Cordingley Gloucester UK

    1. [HWE] Walloon Churches in Guyana & Surinam
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Fellow listers -- You may be interested to know that there were three Walloon Churches in what you might think of as an unlikely location, ie. South America. Specifically, churches were established in the colonies of Demerara and Essequebo in Guyana and also in Paramaribo in Suriname (or Surinam). At least some of the records of all three churches have been filmed by LDS and are available on the same film -- #106810. For example, the Demerara records contain marriages between dates 1758-1811. For Essequebo, the records contain marriages between dates 1779-1811. And for Paramaribo, the records include baptisms and marriages between dates 1695-1790. The original manuscripts for all three churches are held at Algemeen Rijksarchief te 's-Gravenhage. For those who may not be aware of it, Guyana and Suriname are located in northeastern South America (north of Brazil) and share a common border with each other. Both also have coastline along the Atlantic Ocean. Before 1975, Suriname was a dependency of The Netherlands and was called Dutch Guiana or Netherlands Guiana. Using slave labor, the Dutch cultivated sugarcane, which became the major source of income, and large agricultural estates developed. The present-day capital and only major urban area is Paramaribo. Guyana was also, at one time, under the control of the Dutch but also fought over by the English and the Spanish. Ties with its Dutch past are still evident today in town with names such as New Amsterdam. For an outline of events from Guyana's history, go to the following URL: http://geocities.com/TheTropics/Shores/9253/History.html. Does anyone have further information about the Walloon churches and communities in these locations? Andrea
