    1. [HWE] PALLETT
    2. Gerald Bennett
    3. The surname PALLETT appears in the list of Huguenot surnames given by Reaney. I have found French persons with this surname among the list of Aliens made Denizens,(London) but they were resident in England long before the Edict of Nantes. My mother Amy Pallett always insisted on French ancestry, though some surname texts have it as an English surname,so it's confusing. I have Francois Pallett and his son also Francois Pallett, and there's nothing more French than Francois! (sorry about the cedilla). Pallet de Saintonge in Poitou is an armigerous family. Weavers came from there. A John Pallett, weaver,is found in Bethnal Green in 1680. Clement Paillet (note the spelling) had sons Clement and Daniel. A Clement and Daniel Pallett (note the spelling!) were apprentice weavers. However,I don't think my Pallett people are the same as Paillet, which is quite a distinguished Huguenot family. English scribes would not have been able to handle the French,so would probably have anglicised the surname and pronounced it the English way, articulating the T. Regards to all. 40 degrees centigrade here in Canberra.

    3. Hello to all you very quiet listers out there <g>. Taking some long January snoozes? If you are, it's the perfect time of year for it, isn't it -- ie. dreary mid-winter in Europe & North America and probably blazing hot down there in AUS/NZ/RSA. 1. [HWE] SURNAMES (GA-GL) > Threadneedle Street Church tesmoignages
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hello, listers -- For some time now, I haven't posted any further installments of the surnames I extracted from the Threadneedle St. Church tésmoignages. In fact, my last post in this series was on 9 Dec with surnames E-FL. If you missed those earlier posts or if you are not familiar with the tésmoignages, please access this information in our list archives which you can get to via our website at http://www.island.net/~andreav/index.html. (Look in the section headed The Basics.) My apologies to those of you who were waiting for the rest of the surnames starting with F -- I am unable to post them at this time because I can't find them. This means that I either neglected to extract them at the time I had the film (which has now been returned to Salt Lake) or else I just haven't found the piece of paper I transcribed them on (I have many many piles of paper here beside my computer....<g>). If I do find them, though, I will definitely post them. Today's post includes the surnames beginning GA-GL. Please note that I only have the surnames from this source. Tto access details about any of these surnames, you must either order the LDS film (# 0962137) or look in Volume 21 of the Quarto series published by the Hug. Soc. of London -- Livre des Tésmoignages de l'Église de Threadneedle Street, 1669-1789 (often to be found on the shelves of major libraries or archives). 3. One or two people have asked me how to search the above and I am therefore reposting the information provided a short time ago. The letter below is self explanatory, I hope. I have made several requests by e-mail which have all been answered promptly and without payment being asked for (a typical reply is attached to the mail below). On that basis is see little point in subscribing for the year and it will be more sensible to pay the 60FF if any information is found. I can search the index for names as it is published as a CD and provide the references should the name be found. It would be necessary in most instances to provide the name, likely location and time scale. In the case of an unusual name this would suffice. Dear Judi By coincidence I have a brief note of an Isaac CABANE listed as an apprentice silversmith from St Martin's, Westminster in 1725 and also the marriage of Isac (sic) CABANES and Sarah BOOKER at St Mildred Poultry in 1744 (apparently recorded in Boyd's Marriage Index and also in a slightly different form on the IGI). I'll check for more details on the apprenticeship when I get home. Incidentally, does the box have any marks - maker's mark, hallmark etc? Some moved into Bischweiler (Bischwiller) | near Oberhoffen-sur-Moder in Alsace. Is anyone researching this area? We are researching COBBET and GARTMANN and wondering if they might be Huguenots? We are looking at LDS film727366 for the Evangelisch Reformed church 1710 to 1762. Does anyone know some Huguenot villages about 30 or 50 miles west of Bischweiler where these people were living before moving to Bischweiler There was an Eglise reformee francaise at Bischwiller and this can be found on LDS films 727363/4. Also if you do a place search on the LDS site for BAS-RHIN and when it comes up hit the "view related places" you will find a listing of all records in the area. A lot of these had Temples. In addition there is also Strasbourg itself. Looking at the Bas-Rhin departmental archives it would appear that all their records have been filmed by the LDS together with those in the Strasbourg archives. Hope this helps. Roy Day.

    1. [HWE] Vinson Haller, Vinsonhaler
    2. Sallie Bird V. Dunkle
    3. This name, VINSON HALLAR -VINSONHALER, has appeared in Virginia and Kentucky and west to Oregon. One theory is that they came from Alsace-Loraine in 6000s. One fact is father and son (VINSONHALER) received money from the governent after the Revolution for service other than fighting. The two of them were in Virginia at that time. Bird

    1. [HWE] CABANES, CABANIS, etc. > London, ENG area
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hi to all -- This is in response to the inquiry on 13 January from Judi <jj@jcordingley.fsnet.co.uk> re: surname CABANE(I)S of Walworth, Surrey (London area) c1780. As Judi mentioned in her post, the IGI gives a clue as to possible Huguenot connections. That is, it lists this surname as occuring in the records of two French churches in London -- the Threadneedle St. Church and the Church of the Artillery. These entries would be the extracts from the Huguenot Society of London publications for these church records. I notice that, in my Oct 16 post of surnames extracted from the tésmoignages of Threadeedle Street Church (in list archives), there is listed the surname CABANIS and also the similar-looking CABANEL and CABANNE. Of course, the trick is to find the link between the people mentioned in this record (and the French church records) and the Charlotte mentioned by Judi. I wonder if the date 1780 refers to Charlotte's birth, her death, or some other significant event. Judi, I would suggest a search of the records of Walworth, Surrey since you know your Charlotte had some sort of connection with this location. If you find nothing there, try working gradually outwards, searching in adjacent parishes till you find something (hopefully!) Since you are in the UK, you might have access to original records. If not -- and if you have a Mormon FHC near you -- try a Place Search on the LDS website (www.familysearch.org) to see what Walworth records LDS has filmed. At the same time, have a look at the records of Threadneedle St. and Church of the Artillery to find out specific details about individuals there. LDS has filmed these records and Huguenot Society publications are often available on the shelves of major libraries and archives. The goal is to work backwards in time from Charlotte, linking her to the individuals attending Huguenot churches in an earlier time period. It might also be worth joining a London area mailing list and posting a query on there. Also, check the London section on the Genuki site -- that's UK and Ireland Genealogy at www.genuki.org.uk -- to see if there is a surname list for London area. If you're lucky, CABANES might have been listed there by another researcher. If not, you may be able to add the name there yourself for others to find. Hope these comments have been helpful. I looked it up on the IGI, and it appeared to have A Huguenot connection. Can anyone enlighten me?
