    1. [HWE] AUFRERE/LEFEVRE
    2. Bonjour I am interested in the above named families. Sophia Aufrere, descendent of Anthony Aufrere of Norfolk Co., Eng., married William Dawson. Their son Frederick Dawson was born 1794. I am a descendent of Frederick's daughter Matilda Hill Dawson and Robert Arthur Puckle. The Aufrere name is very common in our family as a forename. The Lefevre name came to the US and in the late 1700s merged with the PRICE line, which is of German extraction, not English. My Great-grandfather was George Lefevre Price, son of Christian Price and Sybil Wells of NY State. I welcome any information on these families. Jean Born in England, but now in Phoenix, Arizona, USA

    1. [HWE] Huguenots in Poland (ZACHE)
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hi, everyone -- This is in response to Edelgard <udostrobel@surfeu.de> who posted on 7 March re: surname ZACHE (and variants: Zachey, Zachae, Zachai, Zachaj, Zachae) in Poland, specifically asking if this name had Huguenot origins. I can't answer that question but it might be helpful to get in touch with the Polish Huguenot Society (Polskie Towarzystwo Hugenockie). This is a new Society, just organized in the last couple of months. To get in touch with them, please e-mail Kazimierz Bem at kdebem@hotmail.com or the Society itself at hugenota@hotmail.com. Hope this helps. Good luck! Andrea

    1. [HWE] Le Havre
    2. Sylvias mail concerning Le Havre was of great interest to me, as about 80% of the Huguenot residents of that place are relatives of mine and many of the names she mentioned are connected in some way to my family. The small Protestant community for 200 years married almost exclusively within their religion, one assumes this was arranged by their parents to cement alliances and perpetuate the faith. However although the names BARBEY/BARBET, BEUZEVILLE, LEVESQUE, JACOB, HEBER(T), GUILLMART/GUILLMAND, AND HEUZE were familiar I saw no connection between them all. My research has concentrated on the Protestant temples at Sanvic and Senitot, so perhaps they were from outside the city. I would be interested in further information concerning these good people. I have been to LE HAVRE several times, unfortunately the city itself was virtually destroyed by the allied invaders in 1944, and little of interest remains to be seen. Of more interest are the towns outside of the city which escaped most of the war. If you really want to get a flavor of what life must have been like in olden days go across the seine to Honfleur, this ancient fishing village seems untouched since the 1500's, and some parts are way older than that. Even though my family was from Le Havre I am ceertain that some must have crossed the river to the old town and visited friends and cousins there. There are still people with my family name of GODIN living in Honfleur and Le Havre. I especially enjoyed a trip to Fecamp where my DU FOU family originated and where there was another small community of Huguenots. Should you wish you can visit the Distillery there where they make a famous Brandy liqueur. Sylvia I would love to hear about your trip and wish you a wonderful time, I hope the weather is good so you can enjoy the most beautiful countryside in France. I feel that it must have broken the hearts of some of my family to leave the beautiful fields of Normandy, for foreign places and when I go back I feel some of their joy in being in such beautiful countryside. Enjoy Chris

    3. Hello, I am new to this list and I'm searching for informations about the family ZACHE or Caché, which shall have Huguenotic roots. My ancestors lived in the area of Kalisch, province Posen. Relatives told me, that they emigrated from Bad Bentheim near the Dutch border in the beginnig of the 18th century, lived in Brandenburg and then settled in Poland, where they were called Zachey, Zachae, Zachai, Zachaj, Zachae. Does anybody know, if Zache is a Huguenotic name? Any informations are greatly appreciated. Regards from Solingen (Germany) Edelgard

    1. [HWE] Huguenot families I am researching
    2. The Curran's
    3. These are the huguenot ancestors I am working on. Jacques COSSART b-1595 and wife Rachael GELTON of Liege, now in Belgium, removed to Amsterdam later Leyden Holland. Birth records of their daughter show that they were living in Leyden in 1632. Their son Jacques COSSART was born 1639 in Leyden and was married 14 Aug. 1656 Walloon Church Frankenthal, Germany to Lydia WILLEMS (Lea VILLMAN) I am not sure which spelling is correct. Louis Du BOIS bapt: 21 Oct. 1626 at Lille, Parish Church of Wicres, France. Suppose to be son of Chaetien Maxmillian Des FIENNES. Louis Du BOIS married 10 Oct. 1655 French Protestant Church at Mannheim, in the Pfalz, German Palatinate, Catherine BLANCHAN, daughter of Matthys BLANCHAN & Madeleine Brissen JORISSE. Their daughter Sara Du BOIS married Jooste Jan Van METERAN b-Gelderland, Holland 1656. I am not certain if the METERAN's were Huguenots or not Matthew BLANCHAN was a man of some note in his native town of Nouvelle Le Conte before being compelled to flee to Manheim. He was a distiller by occupation. Matthew BLANCHAN and his wife Madeleine Brissen JORISSE were originally from the village of Nouville Le Comte in the Province of Artois. They sojourned in the Mannheim Colony for a few years with their daughters, Madeleine and Elizabeth and a son Mathieu who had been born there. The antecedents of Matthew BLANCHAN are deduced from the record of a marriage contract dated 12 Apr 1649, recorded at the Walloon or Strangers' Church of Canterbury England, between: "Anthoin BLANCHAMP, son of the late Leonin, and the late Isabeau LeROY, his father and mother, assisted by Mathieu BLANCHAM, his brother; and Martinne VALQUE, daughter of Jacques, assisted Jaque VALQUE (VALKE), her brother, and Mathieu MARHEIM." (Ref: Huguenot Society of London, Collections Vol. 5 part 3, page 725) Pierre NOE b-early 1600's, Walslant, France and came on the Spotted Cow from Holland in 1663. Married Margaret DUMONT 1659 at London. Margaret DUMONT born France. This is the extent of what I have on these Huguenots who are my ancestors. The Magna Charta Barrons' and other Royal Lineages compiled by Dorothy A.S.Lainson takes the Louis Du BOIS antecedents back quite a few more generations. I would be interested in learning more about the antecedents of the other Huguenots in my ancestral line. Patricia Curran - Chambersburg, PA

    1. [HWE] DERNOCOUR, GALMAR, VILLIERS, CLARIS > Canterbury, Kent, ENG
    2. Andrea Vogel
    3. Hello to all -- This is in response to Pamela <pgmartin@breathemail.net> who posted on 26 Feb to say that one of the marriages that I posted on 24 Feb from the records of Canterbury Cathedral was "hers", ie. 1721 Apr 10 James CLARIS & Mary VILLIERS Pamela, it would have been wonderful if you had provided us all with some details about your research. Never too late for that though. <g> Pamela also asked me -- >Did you notice any entries for DERNOCOUR or GALMAR, by chance? > No, I noticed no entries for either of those two names. There was also no further mention of CLARIS and only one more occurrence of the VILLIERS name, which was another marriage -- 1757 May 2 Francis VILLIERS & Martha WEST It's pretty easy to search this source (LDS fiche # 6906422) because it is a transcribed, indexed copy of marriage entries taken from the original records. I also have fiche #6906421 which is the births/baptisms taken from the same records (also an indexed transcription). There were no CLARIS, DERNOCOUR, GALMAR or VILLIERS names listed in there either. Sorry this was not of more help. Andrea

Joe Olive Date: Sun, 4 Mar 2001 20:52:50 EST Subject: Fw: Virus Warning ONE A new virus has just been discovered that has been classified by Microsoft and by McAfee the most destructive ever! This virus was discovered yesterday afternoon by McAfee and no vaccine has yet been developed. This virus simply destroys Sector Zero from the hard disk, where vital information for its functioning are stored. This virus acts in the following manner: It sends itself automatically to all contacts on your list with the title "A Virtual Card for You". As soon as the supposed virtual card is opened, the &g! ! t; computer freezes so that the user has to reboot. Once the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys or the reset button are pressed, the virus destroys Sector Zero thus permanently destroying the hard disk. Yesterday in just a few hours, this virus caused panic in New York, according to news broadcast by CNN. TWO It is a virus, that will erase your whole "C" drive. It will come to you in the form of an E-Mail from a familiar person. I repeat a friend sent it to me, but called & warned me before I opened it. He was not so lucky and now he can't even start his computer! THREE Intel announced that a new and very destructive virus was discovered recently. If you receive an email called "An Internet Flower For You", DO NOT OPEN IT. Delete it right away! This virus removes all dynamic link libraries (.dll files) from y! ! our computer. The subject of virus warnings (and virus hoaxes) is on our list website (http://www.island.net/~andreav/index.html in the Beyond the Bascis section under the heading Viruses & Hoaxes. I urge everyone on this list to become familiar with the contents. It includes a lot of links where you can go for the latest information about viruses, also other links which will tell you about virus hoaxes. Finally, there are also links leading to information which will help you clean your computer of a virus, if it becomes infected. You should also know that it is virtually impossible for your computer to be infected with a virus through any Rootsweb mailing list, including H-W-E. This is because Rootsweb has constantly-updated filters to catch viruses. If your computer does get hit with a virus, it came from another source -- eg. private mailings or your address book-- not through receiving Rootsweb mailings. Having a good virus protection program installed on your computer is a good idea, as a preventative measure. And a good rule of thumb is to **never** open an attachment on any message unless you are sure what it is. Thanks, everyone, for your cooperation with this. Andrea (as list concierge)

    1. [HWE] Visit to Le Havre
    2. Sylvia Maisey
    3. Suggestions please. I am visiting France for a couple of days next week. I intend going to places connected to the Huguenot ancestors in my husbands family tree. The names we link to are BARBET, BEUZEVILLE, LEVESQUE, JACOB, HEBER, GUILLEMAND, HEUZE, LEMANICHER,CANAYE. We are visiting the area around Le Havre. I intend finding the Chateau Beuzeville for example. I am taking my 9 year son, so don't intend researching records etc. If anyone knows or can recommend interesting places to go in this context please let me know. e.g. museums, cemetaries. Thanks Sylvia M ----- Original Message -----

    1. [HWE] Vaden
    2. bher
    3. Ref Marcia Ryan inquiry re Vaden of New Kent Co. Va. This is what little I know of the origin of my Vaden/Vaiden line can be found in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol 28, page 470, and Vol 39, pages 177 and 300 when the name appeared in New England approx. the same time it appeared in Va. Vol 29 mentions a Moses Vouden formerly of the Isle of Jersey as living in Salem, Mass, and his two daughters, born in 1677 and 1679. A John and Collete, formerly of "ye Island of Jersey" are also mentioned in Salem in 1717. Jersey is one of the Channel Islands, apparently people by that name are still there. Also spellings of Vauldin/deVauldyn /Vouden. I do know my Vaden line was French Huguenot, I have been told they can be found in the records of the Huguenot Church Threadneedle Street in London, but have not had a chance to research that yet. I know this is not much but hope it helps. Barbara Taylor bher@prodigy.net

    1. [HWE] BILLET (BILLETT, BILET, BIELET, BIHLET, BELLET, BILLOT) 1599 till today.
    2. Klaus W. Billet
    3. Hello everybody, I´m a german BILLET probably descend from the first Huguenot wave who fleet from somewhere in France to Swizerland, Canton Bern, to "Wimmis" First document I found is from 1599. The BILLETs later (around the year 1700) settled from Wimmis to the german River Rhein-valley to the places: "Lahr", "Oberkirch", "Offenburg" and "Karlsruhe" in south western Germany parallel to the french borderline. Along old german church-documents our name sometimes varies a little bit to "BILET; BILLETT, BIELET, BIHLET, BELLET, BILLOT" but it seems the true old form must be BILLET. Starting in 1851 five BILLET men (some with their hole families) settled out to USA. But I have no informations where they went there! Only one I know that he went to Baltimore. I would like to get in contact with researchers or US-BILLET-families or other people who believe that they are offsets from a german, swiss or alsatian BILLET-branch to share our BILLET-familytrees. Contacts wanted aross the mailinglist or directly to my e-mail adress: KlausW.Billet@t-online.de Best reetings from Karlsruhe / Germany Klaus W. Billet

    1. [HWE] Which NAMEs do you research and where?
    2. Dear Listmembers, even it was some extra work to look up all the names you asked for, I was happy to see that there are members out there somewhere doing research on huguenot families. The rare postings to the list sometimes give a different impression! (And I can tell you that Andrea, our list-administrator was surprised, too) Now in return for my work I ask you for the following: Could you please post a brief statement, what families you are looking for in which area and the time range, and maybe tell a bit about their profession if known. I know that there is a list with surnames but that is very brief. This would help other listmembers to find connections. I'm personally interested in those walloon families that came from North France, Flandres and the Netherlands, first settled in the Pfalz (Palatinate) and later moved to the North-East of "Germany" (it wasn't called that at the time around 1700, but anyways) an area called Uckermark. Family names are: BEQU, COCHOIS, DE FRENE, DE LA BARRE, DE LATRE, DESOMBRES, DU BOIS, FOUQUET, GENET, GUIARD, LEDOUX, LEFEVRE, LULIOU, MAILLEFERT, ROPITAIL, ROQUETTE, SALINGRE, SALOME, TAVERNIER, VAGER, YOLIN in all kind of spellings Main time range for these people is 1650 to 1750. Place names are: Prentzlau/Prentzlow, Strasburg, Bergholz, Battin, Fahrenwalde, Rossow, Woddow, Walmow, Bagemuehl, Angermuende. This area was alsways 'borderland', sometimes parts of it belonged to Brandenburg or Mecklenburg-Strelitz or (Vor)Pommern. The city of Strasburg(Uckermark) used to belong to Brandenburg for hundreds of years and just recently in 1994 decided to "go" to Mecklenburg-Strelitz, part of the 'Bundesland'-(state) of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (shortly called McPom in Germany). And this makes my own research kind of difficult. The French reformed church books are in the central archive in Berlin (EZAB) available on microfiche, the evangelical lutheran books are still in Strasburg or in the archives in Pasewalk (Mecklenburg-Strelitz). Other files are in the archives of Potsdam (capitol of state Brandenburg) or somewhere in Mecklenburg. The French reformed church books for the Pfalz are in the central archives in Speyer on microfiche, but I can't have them send to Berlin to look into them here. One has to go to Speyer. I started my family research just last year with a very detailed Ahnentafel (ancestors report chart) drawn by my father's brother Siegfried NOLTE, who died in WW2 in 1942 in the age of 22 years. He has done very valuable research at that time (before the war ruined so many of the old documents) and in young age (and without computer, Fax or any of the other helps we got used to so much). I was surprised to see that my greatgrandmother Hermine Henriette FOUQUET, born 1842 in Strasburg had almost only French ancestors, even though the family had come to Germany in 1653 (I have the marriage entry from Frankenthal for Guillaume FOUQUET and Susanne FIERE at 16 Dec 1653. So I became interested in that French colony and French reformed parish, followed her lines back to France and then the different family strings back from 1691 (when they all came to Strasburg) until about 1900 in Strasburg. Here the German data privacy laws hit hard, datas of people that might still be living are restricted. (Birth 100 years, marriage 80 years) And if just one date on a microfiche gets into that time range, you don't get to see the whole thing. Any research has to be done by the officials and that costs a lot of money, and you only can get what you asked for (the marriage of Mr X and Mrs Y) and you have to prove that you are of direct descendancy.
