Hello Listers, What began as a very casual look at this family now has far more interest due to his wife Charlotte DE LAVAL-MONTFORT, which I will not bore you all with at present. While researching this family I have encountered several implausible records and so I turn to this mailing list for further thought and discussion. There is no doubt that my enquiry is on the Huguenot topic, I am afterall, discussing one Gaspard DE COLIGNY and there is no doubt regarding his loyalty to the cause. My enquiry concerns his wife or is that wives ? I have multiple and very reliable sources for attaching Charlotte DE LAVAL (Montfort) as his wife and mother of his children, 5 sons and 2 daughters. I have read with some doubts that he married for a second time in the year before his death. Supposedly he married Jacqueline D'ENTREMONT Reasons for doubt are that this family was not of similar birthright as the DE COLIGNY and some texts make comment that they were indeed attempting to raise their position in society by wedding anyone with title. There is also a story by a Pere Clarence d'Entremont, Histoire du Cap-Sable de l'an Mil au Traité de Paris (1763), Volume 3, pp. 806-810 where he offers that this supposed second wife adopted a child after the death of Gaspard and from there many on the North American continent seem to be making claim to an attachment to the DE COLIGNY family. And so my enquiry, and please do quote sources that you believe to be reliable. Who married Gaspar (Gaspard) DE COLIGNY born 16th of February, 1518 Chatillon sur Loing, with when and where ? Firstly "IF" the records of the good father are to be taken as absolute , concerning the adoption story, then there are many genealogical records in both Canada and the USA which require correction. And secondly, if there was no second marrage at all then even more records will be incorrect and so the myth will continue. This is not the only such situation to occur with family history study and the longer that confusion remains, the longer the error continues. I seek your historically correct responses to this mystery. Once the genealogy of DE COLIGNY the great hero is confirmed then perhaps a short essay on his great deeds will flow. Kind Regards, Peter Leroy
Hi Peter and all, From: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, November 11, 2003 7:41 PM Subject: [HWE] DE CHATILLON (DE COLIGNY) > Could someone please tell me when Gaspard II DE COLIGNY > was born ? One of the most respected sources for noble and royal genealogy is: Europäische Stammtafeln. An index of what is contained is here: http://www.klostermann.de/stamm/schw_reg.htm If you look under C, you will see: "Châtillon, Duc de (Coligny) XIV/62 A" That would be volume 14, table number 62A. This will, hopefully, give not only his birth date but also some ancestors and descendants. Some more information about this source is here: http://habitant.org/tools/esnotes.htm Here are some of the places it is available: http://habitant.org/tools/esloc.htm Regards, Howard [email protected]
Et Voila! Ask and ye shall receive. Well how many times has this been written on this most wonderful of mailing lists ? Sometimes it is not the actual information offered that is helpful but an idea of where to search further. And thank you to Tony Fuller on this occasion. Gaspar (Gaspard) DE COLIGNY was born at Chatillon sur Loing on the 16th of February 1519. And!! by wandering along the suggested genealogical path we have made yet another part of a puzzle come to life. But that is not for this list. Thank you kind sir. Kind Regards, Peter Leroy > If so there may be a way of looking for your > marriage/birth through their line.

Hi Guys I temporarily have a copy of the records for the Colchester Dutch community and church extracts that were published as Hug Soc Quarto series 12, register of the Dutch Church, Colchester. Hello One and All, Here I was about to offer a small piece on the great man Gaspard DE CHATILLON or as he may be more familiar to you, Gaspard II DE COLIGNY, my preference is to think his name was actually DE CHATILLON and as he inherited the title Comte de Coligny then he is CHATILLON rather than COLIGNY. But what is in a name so lets just call him Gaspard II DE COLIGNY for now. Oh, dear listers, this was to be the treatise of all works. The stuff that all you budding students were going to seize upon and plagiarise as it has never been done before. A story with an ending, blood and gore, burnings and all that good heroic stuff. But alas dear listers I am having the very ordinary problem of accuracy. Did I ever mention accuracy in genealogy and or historical records ? Perhaps I have. Now we all know that Gaspard II was Admiral of France or as some would put it, Ammiraglio di Francia. And we all know about de Conde and that, dare I mention them again, DE GUISE familly. In short we were going to read all about a hero of the Reformation in non-religious matters, WAR! But then a funny thing happened on the way to the library, I left some notes behind. Libraries are where the correct history is to be found and so without a care I plodded on uphill, backwards, in the snow. And here I have the question that I am sure most of you learned subscribers will all giggle at when I ask, due to you all having completed Huguenot 101. Could someone please tell me when Gaspard II DE COLIGNY was born ? I have discovered anything from 1519 to 1529. We know that the 24th of August, 1572 was not a good day for Charlotte DE LAVAL-MONTFORT as it was the day of her becoming a widow. So now you will all have to wait until some kind soul can deliver via this list the day Louise DE MONTMORENCY (Gaspo's mother) gave birth to this most heroic of men. I shall wait. Kind Regards, peter Leroy

Hi Andrea Welcome back, things here are still going well (well, they seem to be) but it's always good to have you around keeping us all in line. Regards Tony Fuller
Andrea - Perhaps you should disappear more often! (Please, for our American brethren - that is a British type joke). Sorry that you have been suffering from computer problems; I thought I was the only person who suffered them on a regular basis. My broad band failed about three weeks ago, I spent over two weeks swearing at both my ISP and BT; had my computer virtually re-built at vast expense, as well as re-, and re- re-installing software. Eventually it was discovered that the fault was not in my ISP, BT, the telephone line or my computer, programmes or system (including ancillary equipment); hence the time and difficulty in establishing the fault. (No, it wasn't the operator, either). Just in case it may help some other unfortunate -. I route my out going 'phone calls through NTL by means of a dialling box gubbins that they supply, one of which is fitted to each 'phone socket. One of these, fitted to an upstairs 'phone that I very rarely use, had decided the time had come to die a death. During its death throes it made spurious dial signals every time I attempted to use broadband, (but not during the normal use of the telephone line). Possibly this may save some other lister both frustration and expense. No one else seems to have heard of this particular problem. Hello Listers -- Well, seems I can't go away from home for a while without the list springing to life again. This isn't a complaint, though. Glad to see the activity and the chit-chat amongst subscribers. My computer problems have also continued over the past several weeks. Hence my disappearance from the list (again!) and the back-up of messages on the Board. I think a new computer is definitely in order for me. This one's given me a lot of grief over the last several months. But enough of my troubles. I hope everyone is prepared to hold on to their patience for just a few more hours -- so I can catch my breath and have a good night's sleep -- then I'll deal with the list stuff that need to be dealt with as quickly as I can. My old computer should be fine for a while, now that I've given it a good talking to and applied some string and duct tape to it in strategic spots......Andrea (list concierge)
