Hi Judy, I too have Hughes in Wales--Amlwch, Anglesey. I have found invariably that the first male child was always named for its paternal grandfather. The first female child was probably named for its paternal grandmother, but could be for its maternal grandmother. Try the WILLPERF database on www.rootsweb.com Click on world connect. When you see a block to enter a database name, type in WILLPERF. It has a lot of the old Welsh pedigrees. I don't know where Pentwyn in Llantilio is located. You might try the various Welsh mailing lists for that location. Go to www.rootsweb.com and find the appropriate county/shire. Have you tried Genuki? I have lost the URL--Google for it. Click on the door to enter and you will find Wales. Hi Listers, I have read with interest everyone's chat about the naming of first male and first female children, especially as Hughes features in at least 2 generations of mine on my mother's side from areas Llaniestyn, Llandwrog, Llanllechid & Bethesda. The father was named I believe as per the normal after his father : Hugh, however when Hugh Hughes married Jane Mesach, their first born was a daughter, whom they named named Jane B1832, their next born was a son and they named him Mesach Hughes B1834, from there they appeared to go back to relatives names of Benjamin, Robert & Ann. The only name carried forward after the eldest son migrated to Aus. was Jane, & Robert. Only because I have never followed the other branches of that line. I have always found it interesting how people gained their christian names and if they followed the same or similar occupation. In my case grandfather Mesach Hughes was a quarryman and the family story was that his wife (Elizabeth Griffiths) was concerned he would have an accident in the quarry he where was working in Wales, hence they migrated and he resumed his trade as a quarryman, only to drown in a quarry here in Aus. Now who does not believe in fate, destiny or just plain bad luck. Have a good day everyone Cj Aus. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betty A Pace" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Cc: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, August 21, 2008 8:56 PM Subject: [HUGHES-WALES] Hughes > Hi Judy, > > I too have Hughes in Wales--Amlwch, Anglesey. > > I have found invariably that the first male child was always named for > its paternal grandfather.
